    Installation and startup guide for the GE/UTC Interlogix NetworX NX-1700E Proximity Card Reader — an access control / door control module that expands NetworX (NX-6, NX-8, NX-8E) security control panels.

    General Description

    The NetworX NX-1700E is a microprocessor-controlled proximity card reader / door control module used to expand the capabilities of NetworX control panels.

    • Includes one low-current trigger output, usable to control a door strike relay
    • Up to 15 card readers can be connected to the NetworX control panel
    • Can be programmed to control access in any or all partitions
    • LEDs can be programmed to follow the output and/or the armed/ready status of the system
    • Has an optional optical tamper switch

    Installation and Wiring

    Wire Description
    GREEN (DATA) Connect to the NetworX control panel DATA terminal — data-signaling terminal to all buss devices.
    BLACK (COM) Connect to the NetworX control panel COMMON terminal — supplies common side of power to the reader.
    RED (POS) Connect to NetworX control panel AUX POWER + terminal — supplies power to the reader module.
    WHITE (EGRESS) Optional EGRESS (exit) input. Connect a normally-open egress switch between this terminal and COM. Leave unconnected if unused.
    BLUE (OUTPUT) Optional open-collector (negative trigger) output for driving a relay. Connect relay coil contacts between this terminal and AUX POWER +. Absolute maximum 14V @ 25mA — this is a low-current output and must not directly energize high-current door openers.

    Enrolling

    NetworX control panels automatically find and store in memory the presence of all keypads, zone expanders, wireless receivers, output modules, and other buss devices, allowing them to be supervised. To enroll: enter Program Mode via the control panel Installation Manual procedure. When Program Mode is exited, the panel automatically enrolls devices (about 12 seconds, Service LED illuminates). User codes will not be accepted during enrolling. If an enrolled module is not detected afterward, the Service LED illuminates.

    Addressing

    Unlike most NetworX expanders, the NX-1700E's address is determined by itself during installation — no manual address entry. When prompted for the module device number during programming, scan a card at the reader to initiate addressing (one short beep). After 1–2 seconds, the reader beeps back its assigned address (long beeps).

    Programming Overview

    Note: NX-108E/NX-116E/NX-124E series keypads should not be used to program user cards.

    1. Enter Program Mode — the Stay, Chime, Exit, Bypass & Cancel LEDs flash; enter the Go To Program Code (factory default is a 4-digit code) to enter Program Mode.
    2. Enter the module address — scan a card to have the reader address itself, then enter that address followed by [#]. The Armed LED illuminates, waiting for a programming location.
    3. Enter a location — enter [location] followed by [#]. If valid, the Armed LED extinguishes, Ready LED illuminates, and zone LEDs show data for the first segment.
    4. Change data — enter new data; Ready LED flashes until saved. Press the [r] key to save and advance to the next segment.
    5. Exit a location — press [#] to exit without further changes; Armed LED illuminates again for the next location entry.
    6. Review data without changing it — press [r] with no numeric entry to step through segments for review.
    7. Shortcuts — [FIRE] = previous location, [MEDIC] = same location, [POLICE] = next sequential location.
    8. Exit Program Mode — press [EXIT] twice.

    Programming data is either numerical (0–255 or 0–15 depending on segment size) or feature selection (on/off toggles per LED 1–8). LCD keypad users see prompts directly; features not enabled display a hyphen.

    User Cards

    Before a card can be added, one reader must have User Card Programming enabled (Location 242, Segment 1, Option 1). Only a Master User can modify user card information. It's recommended that only one reader be enabled for user modification, located near a keypad — it propagates changes to all other readers (about 30 seconds).

    Important: Adding or de-activating user cards from a reader invalidates the code for User Number 2 — it must be re-entered after all user cards are programmed.

    • Add One User: Access Code Programming with the master code > select User Number 2 > [STAY] > enter 3-digit user number > scan the card. LED1 flashes to confirm; a duplicate card triggers a triple beep.
    • Add Multiple Users with Auto-Increment: [CANCEL] (or [NIGHT] on NX-1248E) > enter 3-digit user number > scan cards sequentially. Each new card auto-increments the user number; system updates all readers after ~30 seconds without a scan.
    • Activate One User: [CHIME] (not available on NX-1248E) > enter user number > scan any card to activate.
    • De-Activate One User: [BYPASS] > enter user number > scan any card to clear.
    • Delete/Reset One User: [EXIT] > enter user number > scan any card to clear. (An individual can still be deleted even if they keep the card.)
    • Entering User Number 0 performs the selected function on the user associated with whichever card is scanned.
    • To add and simultaneously deactivate a card, scan and hold it until two beeps sound.

    Key Programming Locations

    Location Function
    0 Scan functions — assigns what happens on single scan, double scan, and scan-and-hold (send Code Entry, Armed Away, Armed Stay, Disarm, Auxiliary 1/2, broadcast X-10 function, or send RTE). Default single-scan = send RTE (Option 8).
    241 X-10 address (module number 1–16, house code A–P) and X-10 function per scan type (All Off, All On, On, Off, Dim, Bright, All Lights Off).
    242 System options: user card programming enable, optical tamper enable, buzzer/chime behavior, RTE logging, Legacy vs. Alternative scan mode, LED behaviors, and reader partition assignment (1–8, default all on).
    243 Door Shunt Zone and Request To Exit (RTE) Zone assignments (default 0 = disabled). These zones must also be configured as Door Shunt / RTE types in the control panel.
    244 Reader timers: Scan Time (default 1 sec), Relay Active Time (default 10 sec), Door Fault Warning Time (default 30 sec), Door Fault Alarm Time (default disabled).
    245 Resetting the reader address — enter 0 to force the reader to re-address itself on next card scan in Program Mode.
    246 Access options: Maglock/Drop Bolt selection, access regardless of armed status, latching behavior, schedule-only triggering, Forced Entry Alarm logging, RTE requirement, and off-schedule relay behavior. Also enables/disables which of Schedules 1–8 the onboard relay follows.
    247–270 Opening time, closing time, and active days for Schedules 1 through 8 (24-hour format; default 8:00 AM–8:00 PM, holiday suppression option per schedule).
    271–282 Holiday dates by month (up to 8 per month) that suppress scheduled opening times.
    283–284 Activation data for user cards 1–120 and 121–240 (bitmapped, 8 cards per segment).
    285 Code Entry Logging Partition — which partition an RTE-triggered Code Entry message is logged against (0 = lowest valid partition; 1–16 = specific partition).

    Scan Modes: Legacy vs. Alternative

    The reader defaults to Legacy Mode (Location 242, Segment 1, Option 6 = On), matching prior NX-1700E scan behavior: pass the card by the sensor, remove it, then pass it again within the 2-Scan Hold Time to register a "double scan." Turning off Option 6 switches to Alternative Mode, where the card is simply held continuously at the reader for a specified number of beeps (e.g., holding for 2 beeps = double scan). Mixing reader generations/modes on one system can create inconsistent scanning behavior across doors.

    Glossary

    Scan To present or pass a card/FOB within sensing range of the card reader.
    Single/Double/Triple Beep Scan Scanning and holding a card for 1, 2, or 3 beeps triggers the function programmed for that scan type in Location 0/241.
    Request To Exit (RTE) A zone programmed to monitor an open door; activates the onboard open-collector output and sends a message on the buss.
