    Installation instructions for Napco's Gemini GEM-P9600 control panel/communicator — a state-of-the-art, modular residential burglary and fire alarm panel supporting up to 96 zones with optional expansion modules, wireless receivers, and GEM-RP series keypads. This overview covers panel features, wiring, specifications, keypad setup, and basic operation; full step-by-step dealer programming is covered in the companion GEM-P9600 Programming Instructions (WI777), referenced but not duplicated here.

    General Description

    The GEM-P9600 is integrally an 8-zone panel, expandable to 96 zones with optional zone expansion modules, wireless receiver modules, and/or GEM-RP1CAe2 keypads (which include an internal 4-zone expansion module). Each panel includes an integral digital communicator. The system supports programmable area partitioning (up to 2 discrete multi-zone areas, each restricted to its own programmed users), Opening/Closing Suppression windows, Exception Reporting, automatic arming, an 800-event log with precision real-time clock, and downloading via Napco's PCD3000 Quickloader software and PCI2000 interface.

    The standard GEM-P9600 can be converted to the Mercantile "GEM-P9600M" version with the optional H1217 kit (heavy-duty UL commercial enclosure, tamper switches, tamper screws). Fire zones must not be used in a Mercantile installation. Failure to install and program per this manual for UL-listed systems voids the UL listing.

    Voltage rating: 8.5–13.3VDC. Maximum number of 2-wire detectors: 10. Subtract total smoke-detector alarm current from available standby current.

    Summary of UL Requirements (Residential)

    • Use recognized limited-energy cable for initiating, indicating, and supplementary circuits.
    • Initiating loops must be supervised if longer than 3 feet; use the FT2200 EOL relay for fire circuits with 4-wire smoke detectors.
    • Minimum alarm timeout: 5 minutes. Maximum exit time: 60 seconds. Maximum entry time: 45 seconds. Abort delay may not exceed 45 seconds.
    • Do NOT program: Swinger Shutdown, Force Arming, Selective Bypass, Group Bypass, 50ms Loop Response, or Keyswitch Arming on any zone.
    • Program "Disable Callback Download." All zones must be programmed for "Priority."
    • The automatic dialer may not dial an undedicated police-station number.
    • Test the system at least weekly under both AC/battery and battery-only conditions.
    • Replace the rechargeable battery at least every 5 years, or sooner if heavily discharged.
    • For silent panic, connect only to UL-listed holdup devices.

    Installation

    Mounting & Grounding

    Choose a mounting location accessible to a continuously-powered AC source, system ground (ideally within 10 feet), and telephone lines (keep telephone wiring away from keypad wires). Remove appropriate knockouts, mount at a convenient viewing height. Connect the grounding screw through a No. 16 AWG or larger wire to a steel or copper ground rod driven deep into the earth — never a gas pipe, plastic pipe, or AC ground connection — with the shortest, most direct run possible.

    Tamper Switches

    Tamper switches prevent the control panel door from opening or the cabinet from being removed from the wall — ideally wired to a zone active at all times (24-Hour or Day Zone). Three mounting holes exist on each side of the cabinet for this purpose, plus a rear hole for wall-removal detection.

    Keypad Placement

    Locate a keypad near each exit/entry door. Slide the Sliding Label Plate into the guides at the rear before wall-mounting; once installed it cannot be removed without removing the keypad. The keypad's fire and panic keys are not a substitute for a listed manual pull-station.

    Additional zones (9–96) are added via expansion modules on the Remote Bus. Available remote-bus devices: keypads (GEM-RP1CAe2, GEM-RP2ASe2, GEM-RP3DGTL), X-10 interface (GEM-X10), wired zone expanders (GEM-EZM4, GEM-EZM8), wireless receivers (GEM-RECV8/16/96), relay module (RM3008), voice interface (GEM-EVA1), and telephone interface (WIZARD IIe).

    Wireless Systems (Not Evaluated by UL)

    Adding at least one GEM-RECV series receiver lets the panel support up to 96 wireless transmitters, with up to 4 receivers responding to the strongest signal. The keypad displays each transmitter's zone status, low-battery/tamper/supervisory trouble, and last signal strength (1–10 scale; anything under 3 is unacceptable and gets logged automatically outside Fault-Find mode). A failed receiver shows "E06-NN".

    Testing the System

    1. Call the central station to inform them of the test.
    2. Initiate an alarm — preferably on a zone triggering a steady siren — and verify proper signaling.
    3. Wait 5 minutes.
    4. Call the central station to confirm receipt of a good transmission.

    Be sure to test all enabled keypad panics. For wireless signal strength testing, fault each transmitter's zone and use DISPLAY RF XMITTER STAT (Level 3 user code, or Dealer code + A button, answering NO until that prompt appears, then YES) to view the 1–10 signal strength reading.

    Keypad Configuration

    Each keypad must be assigned a unique address (numbered consecutively — no gaps, no duplicates). Only Keypad No. 1 may be used for programming. GEM-RP1CAe2 keypads also support an optional 4-digit Compatibility Number that locks a keypad to one specific panel — record and store any compatibility numbers safely, since changing one requires knowing the old value. GEM-RP2ASe2 and GEM-RP3DGTL keypads work with or without a compatibility number.

    The internal EZM in a GEM-RP1CAe2 keypad can add 4 more wired zones and needs its own group number (01–06) if multiple EZMs are used. Zone response can be reduced from the default 750ms to 50ms per-zone via a simple binary-sum entry at the keypad (Zone 1=1, Zone 2=2, Zone 3=4, Zone 4=8; add the values for the zones you want changed).

    GEM-RP2ASe2 and GEM-RP3DGTL keypads (up to 7 supported) are configured via jumpers J1–J3 for keypad address 1–7, plus optional jumpers to disable touchpad backlight (Jumper A), LCD backlight (Jumper B), or the sounder (Jumper C — do not disable in UL applications). Only one keypad may be configured as Keypad No. 1.

    Basic Operation

    User Codes

    Up to 96 personal user codes can be programmed at the keypad (4–6 digits recommended). The default Level-3 code "123" must be replaced and should never be reused as an actual user code. Types of codes include Arm/Disarm, Arm-Only, Service Code (for temporary users — an "S" appears in the display when active), Panel Access Code (trips the Auxiliary Relay while disarmed, if programmed), Keypad Access Code (for door strikers), and the Ambush Code (a 2-digit silent-duress code entered just before disarming, which should not share its first two digits with any user code).

    Arming / Disarming

    To arm, enter a valid User Code and press the J button — the STATUS LED goes off, the ARMED LED goes on, and the display shows the exit-delay countdown. To disarm, enter a valid User Code and press J again during the entry-delay countdown. "Arming with No Delay" (F button before/after arming) cancels the next entry delay for instant protection while someone remains on the premises.

    In a partitioned system, Overview Mode (high-security, requires a Level-3 code) shows both areas' status at a glance using letter codes (A=Armed, B=Burglary alarm, C=Check trouble, F=Fire alarm, R=Ready, T=Fire trouble, Z=Zone fault). Manager's Mode is the lower-security equivalent for arming/disarming both areas together.

    Bypassing Zones

    Security Bypass requires a valid Authority Level 1+ code with the Bypass option enabled (press B, then the zone number). Easy Bypass (not for UL applications) allows quick bypass by entering the zone number then pressing B, without a code. Bypassed zones automatically revert to unbypassed on disarming unless "Disable Auto-Unbypass on Disarming" is programmed.

    Function Mode Utilities

    The keypad's Function Mode offers a running list of utilities accessed via YES/NO prompts, including: Display Zone Faults/Bypassed/Directory, Activate Bell Test, Display Phone Numbers, Display System/Fire Trouble, Display Opening/Closing schedule, Activate Overview/Chime/Watch, Reset System Trouble (needed for EZM Tamper, Keypad Tamper, Sensor Watch, or Service Reminder — requires Level 2/3 code), Fault Find (fast-loop-response swinger-hunting mode), Activate Locate (find and confirm repair of zone troubles), EZM Zone Find (audibly locate a specific EZM), Activate Dialer Test, and Display Alarm/Total/Fire Log (event history with date, time, area, and zone).
