NAPCO GEM-K1VPS — Talking Keypad Installation Instructions

Installation instructions for the NAPCO GEM-K1VPS Keypad — a voice-interactive, menu-driven keypad with integral PIR motion sensor and siren, designed for use with the NAPCO GEM-P1664 control panel.

General Description

The GEM-K1VPS is a "smart," user-friendly, voice-interactive menu-driven keypad with UL-approved PIR and siren for use with the NAPCO GEM-P1664 control panel. Armed by entering a valid user code and pressing STAY or AWAY, it provides an alphanumeric screen showing system status (a programmable "Hold Down STAY/AWAY Arming" option is also available). The integral speaker provides step-by-step voice instructions through all operations. The keypad combines a wide-angle PIR motion sensor and integral siren for fast, easy installation.

Note: In UL installations, a small acoustic cloth covering the siren module must be removed to comply with UL Audibility requirements (see the "Sole Sounding Device" section below).

Integral PIR Sensor

The microprocessor-controlled PIR motion sensor activates the first zone of the integral EZM only in the armed state (it is not active when disarmed, to make arming easier). It can be tested while disarmed via the PIR Test menu option in Keypad Menu Mode. If armed Away, the keypad PIR generates an alarm if an intruder is detected — the system can then only be disarmed/silenced by entering a valid user code.

The keypad PIR occupies the first zone of the integral EZM when enabled — be sure to enable that zone. The PIR zone should be programmed as a STAY zone and E/E Follower zone. The PIR is also used to trigger voice prompts and control keypad backlighting to save standby current.

Integral 4-Zone EZM

Each keypad contains an integral 4-zone Expansion Zone Module (EZM), expanding the control panel's zone capacity. Installing 4 keypads on a GEM-P1664 adds 16 zones. Additional GEM-EZM / GEM-EZM4-8 modules can further expand capacity to a total of 64 zones. If using the keypad PIR, enable the first zone of the integral keypad EZM.

Installation

Up to 7 keypads can be installed on the GEM-P1664 control panel's 4-wire bus (see Control Panel Installation Instructions for max panel loading). The GEM-K1VPS's integral siren produces 85dB at 10 feet, meeting UL Residential Burglar and Fire requirements. At least one keypad must be powered by the control panel.

Power

Powered by the keypad bus of the control panel, or an appropriately rated UL-Listed Security/Signaling power-limited supply rated 12VDC. Voltage rating: 11.7–13.9VDC, 70mA standby / 210mA in alarm. For fire installations, the keypad must be powered by the control panel only, or use an external Listed audible signaling device on the control panel Bell circuit. Standby current can be reduced by cutting jumper "W1," which disables keypad backlighting entirely.

Physical Installation Steps

1. Open the keypad: Insert a screwdriver into the 2 slots at the bottom of the keypad and twist to detach the front housing.
2. Mark the holes: Affix the mounting template to the wall; mark/punch through the 4 oval mounting holes and the wire access opening.
3. Cut access hole: Install 4 wall anchors and cut the access hole in the wall. Pull the 4-conductor bus wire into the opening (use caution — there may be high-voltage wiring in the wall).
4. Pull wires through: Pull the 4-conductor bus wire and zone wiring from the control panel through the wall access hole, then through the hole in the keypad base. Secure the keypad base to the wall.
5. Make connections: Solder or crimp bus wires to the keypad connector plug per the wiring diagram (wires can be cut shorter first, pushing excess back into the wall opening).
6. Install the face: Double-check all connections, then snap the keypad front onto the base — insert the 2 top slots onto the base's tabs first, then snap the bottom into place.

Wiring Diagram Reference

GEM-P1664 Remote Bus Terminals

• Terminal 9 — Red wire, positive 12VDC
• Terminal 10 — Black wire, negative (-) GND
• Terminal 11 — Green wire (data)
• Terminal 12 — Yellow wire (data)

EZM Harness

• Zone 1 — Orange & Gray wires
• Zone 2 — Blue & Gray wires
• Zone 3 — Violet & Gray wires
• Zone 4 — White & Gray wires

Any of the 3 gray wires may be used as a zone ground.

Installing Multiple Keypads

Up to 7 keypads can be installed on one GEM-P1664 panel. Each keypad ships configured as "keypad #1" — additional keypads must have their number changed via Keypad Configuration Mode.

Keypad PIR Coverage

• Intrusion Protection: When armed AWAY, the PIR provides intrusion protection with a 25' range at a 90° pattern. Detected intrusion triggers alarm on the zone mapped to keypad EZM Zone #1, with central station reporting. Can be disabled in Keypad Configuration Mode if not desired.
• Presence Detection: 2 side beams provide a 170° presence-detection pattern intended to prevent an intruder from walking along the wall toward the keypad. Detection may brighten the backlight and trigger voice messages; an extremely large signal could trigger an actual alarm if enabled. Keep windows on the keypad's wall closed while armed, to avoid drafts tripping the presence beams.

To enable the keypad PIR:

1. Enable an EZM Address other than "00" for this keypad.
2. Program the control panel for the appropriate number of EZMs, and program the first zone of each integral keypad EZM (Zone 9 = EZM #1, Zone 13 = EZM #2, etc.) as a STAY zone and Exit/Entry Follower zone.

"Smart" PIR Backlighting

Keypad backlights turn on when activity is detected in front of the keypad, combining the PIR sensor, adjustable blue backlight, and voice prompts.

• If no activity is detected for 4 minutes, the display dims; activity brightens it again — useful for bedroom installs where a constantly bright display isn't wanted.
• If the system is in alarm and a person approaches the keypad, the siren pauses for 15 seconds while voice prompts guide the user through silencing the system. If no valid code is entered, the siren resumes.
• During entry delay, the display and button backlighting brighten while voice prompts guide code entry and disarming.

Enabled by default: Backlight Brightness = LOW, Backlight Follow PIR = ON.

Keypad Configuration Mode

Each keypad requires its own configuration (settings are stored per-keypad). At least one keypad is required; only one is needed for a single-area Commercial Burglary installation.

To enter Keypad Configuration Mode: Move jumper JP1 on the GEM-P1664 board from pins 1-2 ("NORMAL") to pins 2-3 ("KEYPAD CONFIGURE") — or press keypad buttons 1, 2, and 3 simultaneously. The display will read "OUT OF SYSTEM XX" (XX = keypad address). Press "11123" then MENU for 2 seconds to enter Keypad Configuration Mode. Repeat for every keypad in the system.

Configuration Options

• Keypad Beep — tactile beep on button press. Default: ON.
• Entry Sounder — sounds during entry time. Default: ON.
• Keypad Address — unique number 01-07 per keypad, assigned consecutively (no gaps). Default: 01.
• EZM Address — assign a unique Group number (01-14) if using multiple EZMs; "00" if this is the only EZM. Default: 00.
• Zone Response — normal loop response is 750mS; can be reduced to 50mS per zone for faster devices like glass-break sensors (not permitted in UL installations, which require 750mS). Sum values (Zone 1=1, Zone 2=2, Zone 3=4, Zone 4=8) and enter as a two-digit code. Default: 00.
• Backlight Brightness — LOW / MED / HIGH. Default: LOW (required if using Backlight Follow PIR).
• PIR — enable/disable. When enabled, PIR triggers alarm only when armed Away. Default: NO (disabled). When enabled, also enable an EZM address and program zone 1 of that EZM as STAY + E/E Follower.
• Backlight Follow PIR — turns backlight on when a person is detected. Default: ON.
• Siren — integral siren follows the panel's Bell output. Default: ON. See "Sole Sounding Device" instructions for UL Audibility compliance.
• Tamper Detect — monitors the front case and rear mounting surface; tamper triggers "E11-XX" system trouble. Default: NO (disabled).

Press RESET to exit Keypad Configuration Mode.

Panel Programming Overview

The GEM-P1664 is pre-programmed at the factory. Programming can be done via Easy Menu Driven Program Mode (menu-driven utility) or Direct Address Program Mode (direct address access) using PCD-Windows Quickloader software or the keypad. Default Dealer Code to enter: 456789. See full programming instructions (WI1810) for details.

Two important notes for GEM-K1VPS installs:

1. "Interior Normally Bypassed Mode" must be disabled (address 1422).
2. All Interior (Stay) zones, including the mapped integral PIR, should be programmed with: AUTO-BYPASS, AUTO-BYPASS RE-ENTRY, SELECTIVE BYPASS, BURG OUTPUT, AUTO-RESET, SWINGER SHUTDOWN, EXIT/ENTRY FOLLOWER, INTERIOR (STAY) BYPASS, POWER-UP DELAY. These are applied automatically when programmed via the Easy Menu Driven Program Mode.

Testing

• Test Keypad PIR: Enter a valid user program code, press MENU to reach Keypad Menu Mode, select "ACTIVATE PIR TEST." Allow 3 minutes for the unit to settle, then walk-test across the protected area (display shows the violated zone, sounder activates). Check for false triggers with heaters/AC on and no human activity present.
• Test Keypad Siren: In Keypad Menu Mode, press MENU until "Test Siren" appears, then press YES. Siren sounds at full volume for 2 seconds.
• Test the System: After all setup, test the entire system including every keypad and zone.

Keypad Menu Mode (User Reference)

Enter with a valid user code, then press MENU. Available options depend on the code type (standard user, dealer-enabled user program code, or dealer program code):

• Display Open Zones, Display Bypassed Zones, Display Zone Directory (also allows bypassing individual zones)
• Activate Siren Test (2-second test of burglary relay + integral siren)
• Display Fire Alarm / Fire Trouble (when a fire alarm is tripped)
• Activate/Deactivate Chime
• Reset System Trouble
• Activate Fault Find (requires Dealer Program Code)
• Activate Dialer Test (requires Test Timer programmed to report)
• Display Alarm Log / Total Log / Fire Log / Open-Close Log / System Log (scroll with NEXT/PRIOR)
• Auto Arm in 1-4 Hours
• Activate Program (User Program Mode)
• Activate Download (modem connection with PC download software)
• Change Keypad Beep Volume / Voice Volume
• Activate PIR Test

Sole Sounding Device — UL Audibility Compliance

To comply with UL Audibility requirements for the GEM-K1VPS as a sole sounding device, remove the small acoustic cloth covering the siren module, or install a compatible UL Listed siren (Wheelock AH-12WP) on the GEM-P1664 control panel bell circuit terminals.

1. With power to the control panel OFF, open the keypad (insert a screwdriver into the 2 bottom slots and twist to remove the front housing).
2. Locate the Siren Module and plug at the bottom right of the keypad's rear housing. The acoustic cloth to be removed is located under the Siren Module.
3. Find the retaining tab and locking clip holding the Siren Module.
4. Use a small screwdriver to push the locking clip away from the retaining tab to unlock the Siren Module.
5. Gently lift the Siren Module to expose the acoustic cloth. Remove the cloth and store it in a safe place for potential re-use.
6. With the cloth removed, the siren dB level is consistent with UL Audibility requirements. Re-install the Siren Module and keypad housing in reverse order.

Troubleshooting

• Keypad lights fail to turn on when power applied: Check the keypad power wires (red and black).
• LCD displays "OUT OF SYSTEM" when power applied: Green wire is open or shorted. If a system trouble also appears, the yellow wire is open or shorted.
• Keypad fails to chime when opening a door:
  1. Verify Chime is enabled via the Keypad Menu Mode ("Deactivate Chime" showing means it's currently ON).
  2. Verify the control panel is programmed for Chime to function, and that Chime Time is programmed.
  3. Check the door contact continuity and operation.
• The system does not arm: The green READY light should be on. If not, a zone is faulted — all zones must be secured before arming. Faulted zones scroll in the keypad LCD window.
