Complete operation and user's guide for the M&S Systems / Linear DMC3-4 System Master intercom and music distribution system.
Complete operation and user's guide for the M&S Systems / Linear DMC3-4 System Master — an intercom and music distribution system with optional built-in CD/MP3 player, supporting up to 15 room/patio stations and 3 door stations.
The DMC3-4 is an intercom and sound system for the home, combining whole-house intercom with AM/FM radio and, with the optional DMCMP3 CD/MP3 Player, playback from CDs and portable music devices. It consists of three major components:
The Master Station front panel includes: AUTO button (toggles Auto Music feature), TIME button (sets clock and music on/off time), PRESET button (sets AM/FM presets), Station Mode Switches (behind a hinged cover — see below), TUNE buttons (tunes AM/FM stations), Display (shows time and operating info), POWER button (turns music on/off — intercom stays on regardless), TONE button (selects volume/tone settings), INTERCOM buttons (talk/listen to other stations; press both to talk to a door station), VOLUME buttons (change volume, adjust tone/time settings), SPEAKER (for music and intercom), and SOURCE button (selects music source).
Behind a hinged cover on the left side of the Master Station are 11 slide switches that determine how the Master Station and each intercom station functions — called the "Station Mode." Each switch is numbered to label the corresponding Room Station's location. When a system has more than nine Room Stations, some switches control two Room Stations.
| Mode | Behavior |
|---|---|
| INTERCOM | Talk/listen from this station; no music; cannot be continuously monitored; hears door chime and can talk/listen to Door Station. |
| RADIO/INT | Talk/listen from this station; can receive music; can monitor any station set to MONITOR; cannot be continuously monitored itself; hears door chime and can talk/listen to Door Station. |
| OFF | Room Stations can still communicate (Patio Stations cannot); other stations can't listen in; no music or intercom audio; not monitorable; doesn't hear the door chime. |
| MONITOR | Any RADIO/INT station can continuously hear this room; user can talk to other Room Stations and to the Door Station (but not listen to it); doesn't hear the door chime; no music. Other rooms can talk to a monitored station only if Monitor Override is ON. |
Display brightness (3 levels: low/medium/high): simultaneously press TUNE ▲ and POWER repeatedly to cycle through levels.
Clock settings: Press TIME to set current hour (VOLUME ▲/▼ to adjust, AM/PM indicated by A/P), TIME again for minutes, then continue pressing TIME to step through Auto On Time hour/minute and Auto Off Time hour/minute. Press TIME again to return to the current time display.
Scan Mode: simultaneously press and release PRESET and SOURCE to toggle between Scan Mode 1 (scans AUX → AM presets 1-8 → FM presets 1-8 → CD) and Scan Mode 2 (same source order, but scans all strong AM/FM stations rather than just presets before moving to the next source).
Music Auto On/Off: set the Auto On/Off times under Clock Settings, then press AUTO to toggle the feature on/off (the display shows "AUTO" when active).
Press TONE repeatedly to cycle through each setting, then use VOLUME ▲/▼ to adjust:
The system returns to normal operation 5 seconds after the last setting is changed.
Pressing the button on a Door Station sounds the chime on all stations set to INTERCOM or RADIO/INT and mutes all system audio (music and intercom) while it rings. If the Door Station is already in a talk/listen session, the chime is disabled until that session ends.
Music sources: AM (530-1710 KHz), FM (87.5-107.9 MHz), CD (optional built-in CD/MP3 player), and AUX (any source connected to the optional Audio Input Wall Plate). Press SOURCE repeatedly (with POWER on) to cycle through sources.
Radio tuning: Press and release TUNE ▲/▼ within 1 second to enter Seek Mode (finds next strong-signal station); press and hold to Scan Mode (scans all frequencies until released — slow for the first 2 seconds for fine-tuning, then fast).
Setting radio presets (up to 8 each for AM and FM): Select the band with SOURCE, tune to the desired station, then press and hold TUNE ▲ and TUNE ▼ together for 5 seconds to enter Store Preset Mode; the display shows the preset number being saved. Use PRESET to cycle to a specific preset number if needed. Cancel anytime by pressing TUNE ▲/▼ together again.
Tuning to a preset: Select AM or FM with SOURCE, then press PRESET to step through saved presets (the preset number shows on the display).
Room/Patio Stations cannot select specific CD tracks or remotely control a portable MP3 player — those are controlled directly on the player itself.
Installs below the Master Station and supports four source types: generic portable MP3 players via a 3.5mm audio input jack (plus a USB port for charging, cable not included), standard music CDs, and MP3-format CD-ROMs burned on CD-R/CD-RW media.
Playing from a portable MP3 player: select CD as the source, extend the device drawer, connect the player's headphone jack to the drawer's 3.5mm input via the supplied cable, set the player on the rubber tray, optionally connect USB for charging, then control playback and volume directly on the MP3 player itself (Master Station buttons don't control it — set the player's own volume to about mid-level and use the Master/station volume controls for overall level).
CD play modes (cycled with the MODE button): Normal (plays all tracks in order), Repeat Song, Repeat Disc, Random Disc (plays once in random order), Random All (continuously plays in random order).
CD playing controls: PREVIOUS TRACK (play previous / restart current track; hold to reverse-scan), NEXT TRACK (play next track; hold to fast-forward; also selects next random track in Random modes), PLAY/PAUSE, MODE (cycle play modes; hold to display total disc time and track count — not available for MP3 CD-ROMs), SOURCE/EJECT (press to switch between CD and audio input jack; hold to eject the disc).
