Installation instructions for the Linear DXS-54 Supervised Wireless Motion Detector — a battery-powered passive infrared (PIR) motion sensor with a built-in transmitter for Linear's DXS and DX format receivers.
The DXS-54 is a battery-powered PIR motion detector with a built-in transmitter designed for use with Linear's DXS and DX format receivers, for a variety of motion detection applications. When the passive infrared sensor detects motion in its field of view, the transmitter sends a digitally-coded wireless signal to its companion receiver.
The DXS digital code format features over a million possible codes. DXS transmitters are precoded at the factory to unique codes — no field coding is required. The DXS-54 can send three different signal types: alarm, low battery, and status. Any transmitter can be programmed into any receiver channel; receivers must be programmed to the transmitter's code before system testing and operation (refer to the receiver's instructions for programming details).
In a typical installation, the motion detector is mounted indoors in a corner or on a wall between six and eight feet high. If the infrared level in the sensor's detection pattern increases or decreases rapidly (as when a person or animal moves through the area), the transmitter triggers and sends an alarm signal to the receiver.
The unit is powered by a 9-volt alkaline battery, with a battery life of up to three years depending on the area's traffic. When the battery gets low, the test indicator flashes and a low-battery signal is sent to the receiver when the detector senses motion. Approximately every hour, the DXS-54 sends a status transmission to the receiver, updating it on the transmitter's condition — this lets the receiver determine if a transmitter has a low battery or has been removed from the system. (DXS format receivers can monitor status signals; DX format receivers cannot.)
To conserve battery life, during normal operation the detector can trigger the transmitter a maximum of once every four minutes. During normal operation, the detector requires a "pulse count" of three motion events within eight seconds before sending an alarm transmission.
Pressing the detector's test button places the unit in walk test mode for four minutes. The installer can walk in front of the unit while watching the red test indicator through the detector's lens to determine the detection area. In walk test mode, an alarm signal is sent each time the walk test indicator lights.
The DXS-54's detection pattern covers approximately a 30-foot range, forming a top-view arc pattern from a corner-mounted position 6-8 feet high. In a typical home layout, mount the detector so an intruder crossing a room (front room, bedroom, bath, kitchen) will cross the detection beams. Do not point the detector at heat sources (heaters, etc.), windows, other motion detectors, or door/window transmitters. Mounting in a corner is preferred. Indoor use only.
Remove the case screw and open the case. Connect the 9-volt alkaline battery to the battery clip, plus side up. Be sure to replace the case screw after closing the case.
Punch out the required holes for screw mounting. Use the center holes for wall mounting, or the side holes for corner mounting. The detector can be mounted with double-stick tape, but tape mounting is not allowed in UL installations. After mounting, snap the detector onto the base and replace the case screw.
For programming, refer to the receiver's instructions. After programming the receiver to the transmitter's code, test the system: staying clear, wait at least five minutes before walking into the detection area, then walk across the detection pattern and verify that the receiver activates.
When the detector has a low battery: remove the case screw and open the case, replace the battery with a fresh 9-volt alkaline or lithium battery (plus side up — use alkaline or lithium batteries only), then snap the detector back onto the base and replace the case screw when finished.
