    Full text manual (for reference)

Installation and quick start guide for Leviton's LevNet RF USB Computer Link (Cat. No. WSCOM-03W) — a USB transceiver tool used for testing, monitoring, and commissioning in a LevNet RF or any EnOcean-enabled environment.

    Warnings and Cautions

    • Do not use this device with a larger antenna than provided or specified.
    • Always ensure the antenna is securely fastened for optimum performance.
    • Device performance can be affected if used outside its temperature range.

    Description

The WSCOM computer link works by receiving and transmitting at 315MHz using the EnOcean wireless protocol, connecting to the world of EnOcean-based wireless products via any PC (desktop, laptop, notebook) or USB host device (tablets). It works with EnOcean DolphinView Basic software for Windows® XP/7 for visual analysis of wireless radio messages (telegrams).

    Operational range (with provided antenna):

    • Line of sight: up to 200ft receiving/transmitting in hallways
    • Line of sight outdoors: up to 250ft receiving, 200ft transmitting
    • Indoor drywall: up to 100ft, through max. 5 walls
    • Fire safety/ferroconcrete walls or ceilings: coverage not guaranteed

    Features

    • Receive telegrams from EnOcean-enabled devices, including self-powered switches and sensors
    • Signal strength analysis (RSSI) of transmitted wireless telegrams
    • Send messages to control EnOcean-enabled devices
    • Remote configuration of devices supporting Remote Management
    • Compatible with EnOcean's DolphinView and other 3rd-party software
    • Supports all message formats of EnOcean Equipment Profile (EEP) 2.1
    • Compatible with EnOcean Serial Protocol 3 (ESP3)
    • Programmable repeater (1/2 Level)

    Equipment Needed for Installation

    • Desktop/laptop/notebook PC or similar USB-enabled device
    • DolphinView Basic (minimum) or other third-party software — requires Windows® XP/Vista/7, .NET Framework 3.5, 1.5GHz CPU, 1GB RAM, 200MB disk space, 1280x768 screen with DirectX 9 support
    • FTDI drivers (included with DolphinView)
    • USB extension cable (optional)

    Installation Steps

    1. Make sure the WSCOM tool is not plugged into the PC.
    2. Download DolphinView Basic from Leviton: www.leviton.com/LevNetRF/DolphinViewBasic
    3. Install DolphinView Basic 3.2.1.0 or newer, accepting Uninstall previous DolphinView, Create desktop icon, and Update/install FTDI drivers (v2.08.02 or newer).
    4. Restart your PC after installation.
    5. Start DolphinView.
    6. Plug in the LevNet RF USB computer link. The red power LED turns ON while amber and green LEDs blink twice simultaneously, signaling the device has booted up and is working properly.
    7. The tool should be automatically detected by Windows and any required drivers installed (may take up to 2 minutes; both USB Com Port and USB Serial Port drivers install).
    8. In the drop-down next to Connect [F5], select the COM PORT showing "GATEWAYCTRL" with the green check mark.
    9. Click Connect [F5] — DolphinView can now access the WSCOM USB tool. Any 315MHz EnOcean telegram transmitted appears in the Telegram Log.
    10. Use an unpowered switch (WSS0S) or similar transmitter to verify EnOcean telegrams are being received.

    Device Status LEDs

    • Red power LED: Device is being powered from host
    • Amber receive LED: Device received a wireless telegram
    • Green transmit LED: Device transmitted a wireless telegram (not available with DolphinView Basic)

    Product Usage

    • Communication gateway: With third-party software, simulates transmitting devices and can be learned into all receiving devices, allowing a central Gateway PC to monitor/handle lighting controls.
    • Monitoring and logging: Connect to a PC to monitor lighting in a small office — especially useful with wireless occupancy sensors to track room occupancy or detect false tripping.
    • Testing installs: Use DolphinView Basic to perform a site survey — check signal strength (dBm, sub-telegrams), verify occupancy sensor transmission, and validate installs over several days of logging.
    • Repeater: Enable one WSCOM as a repeater for sites with poor signal quality between transmitter and receiver (<100ft apart). Requires DolphinView Advanced. Level 1 Repeater repeats the original message; Level 2 can re-transmit a repeated message.

    Signal Quality Guidelines

Color Code Signal Quality Signal Level
Green Excellent -40 to -50 dBm
Green Good -50 to -60 dBm
Green Okay -60 to -70 dBm
Yellow Marginal -70 to -80 dBm
Red Poor (may miss telegrams) < -80 dBm

    Troubleshooting

    • Driver not detected: Install the latest (2.08.14+) FTDI Virtual COM Port drivers from www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm. A reboot may be required.
    • Driver not installed: Check Device Manager under "Other devices" for FT232R USB UART or Serial USB; right-click and Update Driver Software.
    • Marginal/poor signal: Reposition the transmitter so the antenna aligns with the receiving device; use repeaters if repositioning isn't possible.
    • Improving performance: Avoid installing near metal or behind metal faceplates; avoid metal ceilings; rotate occupancy sensors so the Leviton logo points toward the receiver; keep antennas outside metal electrical boxes. Also watch for false ceilings with metal/carbon fiber panels, lead/metal-coated glass, steel furniture, and insulating wool on metal foil in hollow walls. Keep at least 3ft distance between EnOcean receivers and other high-frequency emitting devices.
