Installation instructions for the Leviton W5603 Weather Resistant 3-Way Switch (Cat. No. W5603), rated 15A-120/277V AC. This switch is a self-contained unit for use in a standard single-gang, FS, or FD weatherproof box, and pairs with another weather-resistant 3-way switch or a wired switch companion.

    Safety Warnings

    • To avoid fire, shock, or death: Turn off power at the circuit breaker or fuse and test that power is off before wiring.
    • Install and use in accordance with local electrical codes and regulations.
    • If unsure about any part of these instructions, consult a licensed electrician.
    • Use this device WITH COPPER OR COPPER-CLAD WIRE ONLY.

    Cautions

    • To avoid damage to the product, do NOT use disinfecting products, including foggers, sprays, or other atomized cleaning agents.
    • Do NOT spray liquid directly onto the product.
    • To clean, use only a damp cloth with mild soap.

    Installation Notes

    • Install over smooth, flat surfaces (metal or vinyl siding, clapboard, or plywood). If the mounting surface isn't smooth, use silicone sealant to ensure a proper seal.
    • Mount in a single-gang box ONLY, using the six provided mounting screws.
    • Standard single-gang wallbox: mount using the two center screw locations with two of the provided screws, tightened to 14-16 in.-lb of torque.
    • FS or FD weatherproof box: mount using the two center screw locations plus the four additional screw locations with all six provided screws, tightened to 14-16 in.-lb of torque.
    • Use a punch or 9/64 in. drill bit to remove extra material in the four additional screw mount locations.

    Installation Steps

    1. Remove the wallplate. Insert a flat-head screwdriver into the notch at the bottom of the wallplate to remove it.
    2. Identify your wires. Most common configuration connects Traveler 1, Traveler 2, Neutral, Ground, Line, and Load between the branch circuit, the Weather Resistant 3-Way Switch, and (optionally) a wired switch companion.
    3. Wire the device. Work on one connection at a time.
      • Back wire: Strip insulation to approximately 5/8 in. (1.6 cm) per the strip gauge on the device. Insert straight wires under the clamps of the appropriate terminal screws. Tighten to 14-18 in.-lb of torque. Back wire terminal screws accept up to #10-14 AWG copper or copper-clad wire.
      • Side wire: Strip insulation to approximately 3/4 in. (1.9 cm) per the strip gauge on the device. Loop wires clockwise 3/4 turn around the terminal screws. Tighten to 14-18 in.-lb of torque. Side wire terminal screws accept up to #12-14 AWG copper or copper-clad wire.
    4. Mount the device using the appropriate screw pattern described above.
    5. Tighten mounting screws to 14-16 in.-lb of torque to ensure a proper seal. Seal between the gasket and the mounting surface, and between all mounting screws and their individual mounting screw gaskets.
    6. Install the wallplate, making sure the notch is at the bottom.
    7. Restore power at the circuit breaker or fuse. Installation is complete.
