  • Leviton OSP Series Power Packs — UL Plenum Rating Application Note

    September 08, 2026 2 min read

Application note explaining the UL plenum rating on Leviton's OSP Series Power Packs for occupancy sensors, and where that rating lets you install them.

    Full text manual (for reference)

    Overview

Application note for Leviton's OSP Series Power Packs (used with occupancy sensors) covering their UL plenum rating and where the devices can legally and safely be installed — junction boxes, fluorescent ballast cavities, and above-ceiling return air plenums.

    Objective

Increase installer awareness that OSP Power Packs are UL 2043 plenum-rated, giving installers more flexible mounting options than a standard (non-plenum-rated) power pack would allow.

    What Is a Plenum Space?

A "Return Air Plenum" is the open air-handling space above a suspended ceiling (or below a raised floor) that a building's HVAC system uses as the return-air path. Because this space carries circulating air throughout the building, any fire inside it can go undetected and spread toxic fumes system-wide through the HVAC ductwork — putting occupants anywhere in the building at risk.

Plenum-rated materials burn at a much higher temperature and emit far fewer fumes, reducing that risk. Devices without a plenum rating are generally restricted from being installed directly in these spaces without additional conduit or enclosure.

    Product: OSP Series Power Packs

Leviton's OSP Series Power Packs provide low-voltage power and line-voltage switching for use with occupancy sensors.

    • UL 2043 plenum-rated — polycarbonate housing is UL 94HB rated (evaluated to the 5" flammability requirement) with Teflon-coated low-voltage leads.
    • Can be installed inside a junction box, inside a fluorescent ballast cavity, or directly in a return-air plenum space.
