Leviton Designer Wall Switch Occupancy Sensor — Installation Instructions (ODS10-IDx)

Installation and operation instructions for the Leviton Designer Wall Switch Occupancy Sensor (Cat. No. ODS10-IDx), a single-pole or multi-location motion sensor that automatically switches lights ON and OFF based on detected occupancy.

Overview

The ODS10-IDx detects motion from a heat-emitting source (such as a person entering a room) within its field-of-view and automatically switches lights ON and OFF. Controlled lights remain ON until no motion is detected and the scheduled time-delay has expired. The sensor is UL listed, CSA certified, and conforms to California Title 24 requirements.

The sensor covers up to 2,400 sq. ft. (223.3 m²) using a small semiconductor heat detector behind a multi-zone optical Fresnel lens, which establishes dozens of detection zones. It is most effective sensing motion across its field-of-view, and less effective sensing motion moving directly toward or away from it.

Placement Guidance

Occupancy sensors respond to rapid temperature changes, so avoid mounting near climate-control sources (radiators, air exchanges, air conditioners) — hot or cold drafts can look like body motion and trigger false activation. Mount at least 6 ft. away from climate-control sources and from large-wattage bulbs (over 100W incandescent), which also emit heat that can trigger the sensor. Do not mount the sensor directly under a large light source. The device fits a single-gang wallbox.

Installation Instructions

WARNING: To be installed and/or used in accordance with appropriate electrical codes and regulations. If unsure about any part of these instructions, consult a qualified electrician. Controlling a load in excess of specified ratings will damage the unit and pose risk of fire, electric shock, personal injury, or death. Do not install this unit to control a receptacle.

1. Requires a ground connection to operate — use the ground wire in the electrical box, or if none exists, ensure the box itself is grounded and attach the ground wire to the box with a screw.
2. Turn off power at the circuit breaker or fuse and test that power is off before wiring.
3. Connect wires per the appropriate wiring diagram: BLACK lead to LINE, BLUE lead to LOAD, GREEN lead to GROUND. Twist strands of each lead tightly with circuit conductors and push firmly into the wire connector; screw the connector on clockwise so no bare wire shows, then secure with electrical tape.
4. Carefully position the wires in the wallbox, then mount the sensor unit into the wallbox.
5. Secure the device with the long mounting screws provided.
6. Restore power at the circuit breaker or fuse. Allow approximately 30 seconds for warm-up — the device will then turn lights ON and the LED will blink.
7. Perform time-out and light-level adjustments (see below). If necessary, adjust the range control and blinders to stop unwanted activations.
8. Attach the Control Panel cover and a Decora wallplate (not included). Installation is complete — leaving the room causes lights to turn OFF after the selected time-out.

Wiring notes: Use copper or copper-clad wire only; with aluminum wire, use devices marked CO/ALR or CU/AL only. Do not touch the lens surface — clean the outer surface with a damp cloth only. Disconnect power when servicing the fixture or changing bulbs.

Sensor Features & Adjustments

Blinders

Two independently-operating blinders narrow the field-of-view to prevent unwanted activation from traffic in adjacent spaces. Move the blinder adjustment levers (above the control knobs, below "BLINDERS") toward or away from the center using a finger or small screwdriver. With both levers fully toward center, field-of-view narrows to 32°; fully away from center, field-of-view is a maximum 180°.

Time-Delay

Selects how long lights stay on after motion stops ("time-out"), chosen from four preset values via the face marking arrow:

Factory preset is 10 minutes. All durations are approximate within 10 seconds.

Ambient Light Override

Keeps lights from turning ON if there's already enough natural/artificial light in the room. To set:

1. With lights ON, rotate the Time Control fully CCW to the 30-second test mode.
2. Rotate the Light Control fully CCW.
3. Cover the sensor with opaque material, or leave the room, and let it time out (lights turn OFF).
4. Rotate the Light Control slowly CW until the light turns ON — this sets the current ambient light level.

Manual ON Mode: With Light Control fully CCW, lights never turn on automatically — they must be manually turned ON via the push-button and will turn OFF with absence of motion. Fully CW, lights turn ON with any detected motion, even in full daylight.

Range

Rotate the range knob CCW to decrease detection range/sensitivity, adjustable from 100% down to 36%.

Operation

Push-Button: Toggles the lights. If OFF, pressing turns lights ON (remaining ON with motion present); if ON, pressing turns lights OFF (staying OFF regardless of motion until time-out expires — useful for presentations). The Motion Indicator LED blinks every 2 seconds while motion is detected.

Wiring Diagrams

Single Control Application: Hot (Black) and Neutral (White) connect to Line; Black lead of sensor connects to Load; Blue lead connects to Load side; Green lead connects to Ground.

Two-Location Control Application: Two sensors wired in parallel — either sensor can turn the lights ON; either sensor must time out to OFF, or both manual push-buttons must be pressed, for the lights to turn OFF.

Limited Five-Year Warranty

Leviton warrants this product free of defects in materials and workmanship for five years from the purchase date, limited to repair or replacement at Leviton's option. Warranty excludes labor for removal/reinstallation and is void if the product is installed improperly, overloaded, misused, opened, abused, or altered.
