  • Leviton 55240-ASA Surge Protective Device — Installation Manual

    September 08, 2026 3 min read

Installation manual for Leviton's Surge Protective Devices (Cat. No. 55240-ASA, 55208-ASA, 55480-ASA) — Type 1 whole-home/commercial surge protectors installed between the meter and main service panel.

    Full text manual (for reference)

Installation manual for Leviton's Surge Protective Devices (SPD) — Cat. No. 55240-ASA (Single Phase 120/240V AC), 55208-ASA (3-Phase 120/208V AC WYE or 240V AC Delta), and 55480-ASA (3-Phase 277/480V AC WYE or 480V AC Delta).

    Warnings and Cautions

    • TO BE INSTALLED AND/OR USED IN ACCORDANCE WITH APPROPRIATE ELECTRICAL CODES AND REGULATIONS.
    • INSTALLATION OF TYPE 1 SPD DEVICES MUST BE PERFORMED BY AN ELECTRICIAN.
    • TO AVOID FIRE, SHOCK, OR DEATH: turn off power by removing the service meter, or disconnection of service supply by the utility. Test that power is off before wiring!
    • This SPD is a TYPE 1 device designed for use with lightning protection systems (UL 96A).
    • This SPD may not survive sustained overvoltages.
    • Use this device with copper or copper-clad wire only.
    • These devices are NOT to be used with a Hi-Leg Delta voltage configuration.

    Introduction

Transient voltage surges are short-term deviations from a desired voltage level or signal that can occur at any time, resulting in electronic device malfunction or extensive damage. Also termed "spikes," these occur due to magnetic field/inductive coupling or line current interruption, originating either inside a facility (switched loads like motors) or from outside utility lines.

    Description

Leviton's 55240-ASA, 55208-ASA, and 55480-ASA are the first line of protection designed to safeguard homes and small commercial establishments from external sources of high voltage spikes. These TYPE 1 devices connect between each of the two incoming Lines and Neutral.

    Specifications

    • ETL listed TYPE 1 device
    • Suppression in accordance with ANSI/IEEE C62.11 and NEC 285 recommendations
    • 40mm TPMOV fused SPD circuitry for all lines to Neutral
    • SPD enclosed in NEMA Type 3R case for outdoor installation
    • Alarm activates whenever either line loses surge protection
    • Green LED indicates surge protection is stable
    • Red LED indicates protection has failed

    Location and Mounting

    1. Locate the SPD between the meter and the main service circuit breaker panel, or connect at the weather head of an overhead service.
    2. Mount the SPD so the Line and Neutral connections can be made while keeping hook-up leads as short and straight as possible. Avoid sharp bends and turns, which degrade SPD performance. Support the SPD's weight to avoid unnecessary stress on wiring connections.
    3. The SPD should be mounted to an electrical box or enclosure. DO NOT connect directly to electrical conduit.

    Installation Steps

IMPORTANT: TYPE 1 SPD devices should be supplemented with additional load-side SPDs for maximum protection.

    1. Restore power, if necessary.
    2. Measure voltage at the installation location between each Line and Neutral. System voltage must not exceed the specified maximum continuous RMS voltage listed on the SPD label.
    3. Turn off power at the installation location (usually by removing service to meter or disconnection of service supply by the utility).
    4. Switch all distribution panel circuit breakers to OFF to reduce the possibility of accidental voltage on the circuit.
    5. Connect the SPD White (Neutral) wire to the Neutral service conductor, a grounding electrode conductor, or the equipment grounding terminal in the service equipment.
      • 55240-ASA: Connect Line 1 to one of the SPD's Black wires and Line 2 to the remaining Black wire (see Fig. 1).
      • 55208-ASA & 55480-ASA: Connect Line 1 to one of the SPD's Black wires, Line 2 to one of the remaining Black wires, and Line 3 to the remaining Black wire (see Fig. 2).
Keep hook-up leads as short and straight as possible.
    6. Restore power to the SPD and switch circuit breakers to "ON" to reconnect the load. Verify that the Green LED is lit — installation is complete. If the Green LED is not lit and the Red LED is lit instead, re-check the installation and replace the unit as required.
