Specifications and warranty details for the Leviton 55240-ASA Type 1 Secondary Surge Arrester.
Specifications and warranty information for the Leviton 55240-ASA Secondary Surge Arrester — a Type 1 Surge Protective Device (SPD) designed to protect 120/240V single-phase electrical services against lightning strikes and other high-energy surges entering the main service panel.
The 55240-ASA is part of Leviton's 55000 Series Type 1 Surge Protective Devices, designed for main service panels and electrical equipment with high lightning exposure, such as farming irrigation systems and oil/petrochemical pump applications. Type 1 SPDs (formerly called Secondary Surge Arresters or TVSS under the old terminology) are installed on the supply side of the service disconnect overcurrent device, ahead of any downstream point-of-use protection.
| Spec | Value |
|---|---|
| Voltage | 120/240V Single Phase |
| Frequency | 50/60 Hz |
| Surge Technology | TPMOV |
| Maximum Continuous Operating Voltage (MCOV) | 150V |
| Nominal Discharge Rating (IN) | 20kA |
| Maximum Surge Current, Per Mode (Per Phase) | 50kA (50kA) |
| Voltage Protection Rating (VPR) (Clamping) | 600V (L-N) / 800V (L-L) |
| Enclosure Type | NEMA 3R |
| Connection Type | Parallel connection, hardwired via 10 AWG wire |
| Diagnostics | Protection Status LEDs & audible alarm |
| Flammability | Rated V-2 per UL 94 |
Per UL 1449 3rd Edition and NEC Article 285, Surge Protective Devices (SPDs) are classified by where they sit in the power distribution system:
For optimum protection, Leviton recommends a distributed surge protection network: a Type 1 or Type 2 device at the service entrance/sub-panel to knock down high-energy transients, paired with Type 3 devices at point-of-use for sensitive electronics.
| Catalog Number | Description | Voltage (V AC) Configuration | Max Surge Current, Per Mode |

The 55240-ASA carries a Limited Lifetime Product Warranty plus up to $10,000 in Connected Equipment Coverage, valid for as long as the original purchaser owns and uses the device.
This warranty covers all defects in workmanship or materials. If the SPD is damaged by a power surge and Leviton determines the damage was caused by performance failure of the surge suppressor, Leviton will repair or replace the unit at its option.
Maximum coverage per household is up to $10,000 to repair or replace residential equipment (washer, dryer, stove, refrigerator, freezer, dishwasher, microwave, LCD/plasma TV, surround sound system, DVD, DVR, indoor HVAC) that sustains surge damage — provided the 55240-ASA was active and fully functional immediately prior to the claim event, sustained surge damage itself as a result of the same event, and is installed within 100 feet of the conductor of the structure being protected. The 55240-ASA specifically provides $1,000 of connected-equipment coverage for well pumps (well pumps and hard-wired security/sprinkler systems are otherwise excluded from broader coverage). Garage door operators and outdoor equipment, including outdoor HVAC and window air conditioners, are not covered.
Claims must be made within 30 days of damage or loss. This warranty does not cover damage from tampering, modification, improper use, sustained over-voltage, vandalism, theft, normal wear and tear, obsolescence, abuse, or catastrophic events. Valid in the U.S.A. and Canada.
