Specifications and warranty details for the Leviton 55240-ASA Type 1 Secondary Surge Arrester.

    Full text manual (for reference)

Specifications and warranty information for the Leviton 55240-ASA Secondary Surge Arrester — a Type 1 Surge Protective Device (SPD) designed to protect 120/240V single-phase electrical services against lightning strikes and other high-energy surges entering the main service panel.

    Overview

The 55240-ASA is part of Leviton's 55000 Series Type 1 Surge Protective Devices, designed for main service panels and electrical equipment with high lightning exposure, such as farming irrigation systems and oil/petrochemical pump applications. Type 1 SPDs (formerly called Secondary Surge Arresters or TVSS under the old terminology) are installed on the supply side of the service disconnect overcurrent device, ahead of any downstream point-of-use protection.

    Key Features

    • Low Voltage Protection Rating (VPR) to protect sensitive electronic devices including LCD TVs and computers
    • NEMA Type 3R enclosure rated for indoor or outdoor use
    • Internal DIN rail module for easy replacement
    • Provided with #10 AWG stranded, 18 in. long pigtail leads
    • Connected equipment coverage up to $10,000
    • May also be used in Type 2 applications
    • Limited Lifetime Product Warranty
    • Protection Status LEDs & audible alarm

    Understanding SPD Types

Per UL 1449 3rd Edition and NEC Article 285, Surge Protective Devices (SPDs) are classified by where they sit in the power distribution system:

    • Type 1 — Also called Surge Arresters. Typically mounted on the line side of the main service entrance, protecting against external surges caused by lightning or utility capacitor bank switching. (The 55240-ASA is a Type 1 device.)
    • Type 2 — Typically service-entrance or branch-circuit SPD panels connected on the load side of the service disconnect, protecting against residual lightning energy, motor-driven surges, and other internally generated surges.
    • Type 3 — Typically surge receptacles or cord-connected point-of-use devices, providing the last line of defense at the protected equipment itself.
    • Type 4 — UL Recognized Components.

For optimum protection, Leviton recommends a distributed surge protection network: a Type 1 or Type 2 device at the service entrance/sub-panel to knock down high-energy transients, paired with Type 3 devices at point-of-use for sensitive electronics.

"True Whole-House Surge Protection" Limited Warranty

The 55240-ASA carries a Limited Lifetime Product Warranty plus up to $10,000 in Connected Equipment Coverage, valid for as long as the original purchaser owns and uses the device.

    Product Coverage

This warranty covers all defects in workmanship or materials. If the SPD is damaged by a power surge and Leviton determines the damage was caused by performance failure of the surge suppressor, Leviton will repair or replace the unit at its option.

    Connected Equipment Coverage

Maximum coverage per household is up to $10,000 to repair or replace residential equipment (washer, dryer, stove, refrigerator, freezer, dishwasher, microwave, LCD/plasma TV, surround sound system, DVD, DVR, indoor HVAC) that sustains surge damage — provided the 55240-ASA was active and fully functional immediately prior to the claim event, sustained surge damage itself as a result of the same event, and is installed within 100 feet of the conductor of the structure being protected. The 55240-ASA specifically provides $1,000 of connected-equipment coverage for well pumps (well pumps and hard-wired security/sprinkler systems are otherwise excluded from broader coverage). Garage door operators and outdoor equipment, including outdoor HVAC and window air conditioners, are not covered.

    Filing a Claim

    1. Call Leviton at 1-800-323-8920 to report the claim.
    2. Meter Base (50240-MSA) & Surge Arrester (55240-ASA): if the Red Light is ON, call your utility for replacement of the unit. Send the damaged Leviton SPD product(s), freight prepaid, to Leviton Manufacturing for testing and confirmation of damage.
    3. After Leviton confirms SPD damage, have the damaged equipment repaired at an authorized service center.
    4. Submit receipts along with your claim package to: Leviton Manufacturing Co. Inc., 201 North Service Road, Melville, NY 11747, ATTN: CQA.

Claims must be made within 30 days of damage or loss. This warranty does not cover damage from tampering, modification, improper use, sustained over-voltage, vandalism, theft, normal wear and tear, obsolescence, abuse, or catastrophic events. Valid in the U.S.A. and Canada.
