    Description

    This manual covers the Leviton 5-Port (47611-5PT) and 8-Port (47611-8PT) 10/100 Mbps Ethernet Switches, used to create a small Local Area Network (LAN). Patch cords connected from the switch to a structured wiring system distribute network data to devices throughout the home.

    Installation

    1. To install the module into the Leviton Structured Media™ Center (SMC), align the mounting pins with the grid holes in the back of the SMC.
    2. With the mounting pin plungers in the "out" position, press the unit into the grid at the desired location. Secure by pushing the plungers in.
    3. To remove the bracket from the switch, loosen the screws underneath the switch/bracket combination, then slide the units apart.

    Front Panel Indicators

    • Power — illuminates green when powered up
    • Link/Activity (LNK/ACT) — illuminates green when the port is connected to an ethernet or fast ethernet connection; blinks when data is being transmitted or received
    • 10/100 Mbps (100) — illuminates yellow when a fast ethernet connection is made

    Rear Panel

    • RJ-45 Ports — switch is equipped with either 5 or 8 RJ-45 ports, depending on the unit, for making 10/100 Mbps ethernet connections
    • Auto-detect Uplink — use any port to cascade additional switches, hubs, or routers
    • Power Supply Port — connect the provided 12 VDC power supply to the switch

    Making Network Connections

    10/100 Mbps is a specification for ethernet networks based on twisted pair cabling. The maximum segment length for 10/100 Mbps networks is 100 meters. The cable and connectors are commonly referred to as Category 5 or Category 5e patch cords with RJ-45 connectors.

    To establish 10/100 Mbps connections you'll need: a twisted pair Category 5/5e patch cord for switch-to-NIC connections, and a twisted pair Category 5/5e patch cord for switch-to-switch connections ("switch cascading").

    Establishing Connections

    1. Ensure both the switch and the device to be connected are powered off.
    2. Plug one end of a patch cord into an available 10/100 Mbps switch port. Connect the other end to the intended port in a Category 5e Voice & Data Module already wired to the wall location.
    3. Connect a patch cord from the NIC to the device to be connected at the wall location to complete the link.

    Uplinking (Cascading) to Other Switches and Hubs

    Switches, hubs, and similar network devices are uplinked to the switch with straight-through Category 5 or 5e cabling. Connect a Category 5/5e cable from the Uplink port on your network device to any port on the switch.

    • Never install communications components in wet locations unless the components are designed specifically for use in wet locations.
    • Never touch uninsulated wires or terminals unless the wiring has been disconnected at the network interface.
