User guide for the HomeSeer HS-WX300 Z-Wave Plus In-Wall Dimmer and Switch. This device can be configured as either a dimmer or an on/off switch, installs with or without a neutral wire, and works with both wired and wireless companion switches in 3-way circuits. Certified for use in the US and Canada.

Important Safety Warnings

• Risk of fire, electrical shock, or burns. Do not use this switch to control anything that could present a hazard when operated remotely or unattended.
• Do not use with medical or life support instruments.
• Caution: To reduce risk of overheating and equipment damage, do not use to control a receptacle, motor-operated appliance, fluorescent lighting fixture, or transformer-supplied appliance.

Circuit Types

Most lighting loads use line (120 VAC) and neutral wires. The line wire always runs through the switch box, but neutral may not be present. If neutral is present, use the 3-wire method; if not, use the 2-wire method. For 3-way circuits, a neutral is only required at the companion switch location (using HS-WA100+ or standard 3-way switches). Installation

Tools required: medium standard (flat head) screwdriver, medium Phillips screwdriver, wire cutter & stripper.

1. Shut off power to the circuit at the breaker/fuse box — verify power is OFF before continuing.
2. Remove the existing switch's wall plate and mounting screws; carefully pull the switch out but leave wires connected.
3. Note and label the up-to-5 wires present, matching them to HS-WX300 terminals. LINE and LOAD wires are required for every install; NEUTRAL is recommended if present, especially for dimming performance. Typical color convention: LINE (black, powered), NEUTRAL (white), LOAD (black, to fixture), GROUND (green/bare), TRAVELER (red/other, 3-way only). Verify actual wire function with a multimeter or voltage detector — colors can vary by installer.
4. Disconnect wires from the old switch and connect to the HS-WX300's screw terminals.
5. Strip 5/8" (16mm) of insulation from each wire (14 AWG or larger, rated 80°C+, copper only).
6. Loosen each terminal screw counter-clockwise, insert the stripped wire into one of the two holes near the terminal, and tighten. Tightening torque: 12 lbf-in (14 kgf-cm).
7. Carefully reinstall the wired switch into the electrical box and reattach the trim plate.

Configuration

Changing Switch Mode (Dimmer vs. On-Off) — must be done BEFORE Z-Wave inclusion

Default: dimmer mode. Press & hold the small button on the metal yoke, OR (if trim plate installed) tap the top paddle 3 times rapidly then press & hold for 3 seconds. All LEDs blink green 3x = dimmer mode; bottom LED blinks blue 3x = on-off switch mode.

Changing Wire Mode (3-Wire vs. 2-Wire)

Default: 3-wire mode. Turn power off, then tap the top paddle 2 times rapidly and press & hold for 3 seconds. Bottom 3 LEDs flash white 3x = 3-wire mode; bottom 2 LEDs flash white 2x = 2-wire mode. Can also be set remotely via Z-Wave Parameter 32.

Z-Wave Inclusion / Exclusion

Put your Z-Wave controller into inclusion (or exclusion) mode, then tap the bottom paddle 2 times rapidly and press & hold for 3 seconds to start the process. Note: the switch defaults to dimmer mode after exclusion.

Factory Reset

Use only if the primary controller is lost/inoperable. Tap the top paddle 3 times, then tap the bottom paddle 3 times in rapid succession (use two fingers, one per paddle). All LEDs flash white 5x on success — repeat if not. Resets to 3-wire and dimmer mode.

Association

Supports Group 1 (Lifeline Communication) and Group 2 (Basic Set) associations, up to 5 Z-Wave devices per group.

Operation

• Local control: Tap top of paddle to power the load; tap bottom to cut power. If in dimmer mode, press & hold top/bottom to increase/decrease brightness.
• Remote control: On/Off/Dim available via any Z-Wave hub or system.

Advanced Features

• Multi-tap scene control: Tapping the top or bottom paddle 1–5 times rapidly broadcasts Z-Wave Central Scene commands, which can trigger hub automations/events.
• RGB LED indicators: LED color controlled via Z-Wave parameters. Normal mode shows on/off/dim status in one of 7 colors. Status mode lets each LED reflect a custom home status (e.g., garage door open, motion detected). The switch auto-reverts to normal mode when all status LEDs are cleared.
• Instant Status: Uses Z-Wave SWITCH MULTILEVEL REPORT / SWITCH BINARY REPORT plus Central Scene command class — supported by all Z-Wave certified systems.
• Z-Wave SmartStart: Scan the QR code on the metal yoke (under the paddle) with a SmartStart-capable controller; the switch joins automatically within 10 minutes.
• Non-HomeSeer systems may support these features to varying degrees — check with your controller manufacturer. SmartThings users need a special device handler for advanced features.

HomeSeer warrants the original purchaser against material defects and workmanship for a limited 2-year period from purchase, subject to proper installation and use.
