    Operation Manual for the HAI ZigBee Interface Module (ZIM) — a wireless interface and coordinator that connects to a serial port on HAI Omni or Lumina family controllers, enabling two-way control of HAI Wireless ZigBee Energy Management Components (load control modules and thermostats) and other ZigBee devices.

    Overview

    The ZIM's built-in display lets you set up, install, and control the wireless ZigBee system directly, or through an HAI controller. An internal backup battery provides approximately 4 hours of active-use power and up to 24 hours in sleep mode if AC power is lost or the unit is unplugged.

    Getting Started

    1. Unpack the ZIM — box contents include the ZIM unit, a 7-foot modular power/communications cable, and the manual.
    2. Adjust the foot stand by holding the ZIM in one hand and gently pressing the side buttons, then pulling the foot from the back of the unit to a comfortable viewing angle.

    Installation

    The ZIM can sit on a table/flat surface or be wall-mounted. Install in a central area of the premises, as high above ground as practical, with at least 6 inches of clearance above the unit.

    • Keep the ZIM at least 5 feet from other electronic devices.
    • Avoid areas exposed to moisture.
    • Avoid areas with excessive metal or electrical wiring.

    Mounting Steps

    1. Mount to a wall using the mounting holes on the foot stand, if desired.
    2. Insert one end of the supplied cable into the connector on the ZIM; connect the other end to a built-in serial port on the HAI controller.
    3. Set the jumper on the controller's serial port to the "485" position.
    4. Set the Serial Function of that serial port to "ZigBee."
    5. Adjust the unit so the display faces you by gently pressing the side buttons and swinging it upright.

    Sleep Mode

    When AC power is lost or the ZIM is unplugged, it remains operational on internal battery power but enters sleep mode 30 minutes after the last button press. To wake it up, press and hold the Wakeup Button (top edge of the unit) for 3 seconds.

    Home Screen & Menu Navigation

    The Home screen shows the current time and provides access to menus for controlling loads, controlling temperature devices, configuring the display, and configuring the ZigBee network. Once loads/thermostats are configured, the Home screen can display the status of up to three ZigBee devices. Press the Menu button to reach the Main Menu, which contains: Backlight, ZigBee Setup, Display Options, Set Time/Date, and Factory Defaults. Three Task Buttons below the display correspond to on-screen labeled actions.

    Backlight Settings

    • Color — backlight color value (1–100)
    • Brightness — backlight brightness (1–10)
    • Status — Always On, Always Off, or Auto (turns on when a button is pressed, then automatically off)

    Configuration via an HAI Controller

    HAI Omni and Lumina controllers running firmware v3.7 or later support two-way ZigBee integration: HAI thermostats can be paired with ZigBee thermostats (controlled/monitored as if hardwired), and HAI load outputs can be paired with ZigBee dimmers/load modules (on/off, brighten, dim, set level, toggle).

    Configuring the Controller

    1. Set the jumper on the controller's serial port to "485."
    2. Set the Serial Function for that port to "ZigBee."
    3. If using PC Access software, write the configuration to the controller.

    The ZIM acts as the ZigBee network coordinator. Devices must be enrolled through the ZIM before joining the network — each enrolled device gets a unique 4-digit address used by the HAI controller. Devices can also be disbanded (removed). Enrollment/disbanding can be done via an HAI console, HAI PC Access software, or directly at the ZIM. PC Access is the recommended method, since it stores ZigBee addresses in the account file.

    Configuring via HAI PC Access

    Load control modules: Set the unit's House Code Format to ZigBee, click the Address/Node ID button for that unit. If already enrolled (non-zero address) and incorrect, press "Disband" first. Put the new ZigBee device into enrollment mode per its own instructions, then press "Enroll" — a successful enrollment shows the device's ZigBee address.

    Thermostats: Set the thermostat type, click the Protocol/Address button, set protocol to "ZigBee," place the thermostat in enrollment mode, and press "Enroll."

    Note: "Enroll" and "Disband" are disabled if PC Access isn't connected to the controller; ZigBee addresses can be entered manually if the network was previously configured directly at the ZIM.

    Configuring via an HAI Console

    Load control modules: Set the House Code Format to ZigBee. While viewing the unit's status, press "#" twice, select "Disband" to remove any currently assigned device, place the new device in enrollment mode, then select "Enroll."

    Thermostats: Set the thermostat type. While viewing the thermostat's status, press "#" twice, select "Disband," place the new device in enrollment mode, then select "Enroll."

    After enrolling/disbanding via the console, use PC Access to read from the controller so the ZigBee addresses save to the account file.

    Advanced Configuration & Diagnostics (Direct on the ZIM)

    ZigBee Setup Menu

    Used to view status messages, enroll/disband devices, view network device status, change device type, and name devices. From the Main Menu, highlight "ZigBee Setup" and press "OK" to view ZigBee status messages received from ZigBee devices, the HAI controller, or the ZIM's USB port.

    Enroll a ZigBee Device

    1. Put the target ZigBee device into enrollment mode per its instructions.
    2. From the ZigBee Messages screen, press "Enroll," then "Find Device."
    3. Once found, the screen shows the device's address, type (Tstat/Display/Load), and signal strength.
    4. Press "Type" to change the detected device type if needed (cycles between Tstat, Display, Load).
    5. Press "Confirm" to save the device to the ZigBee network, or "Cancel" to discard.
    6. After saving, assign the device a custom name (up to 15 characters) using the arrow buttons and "Select," then highlight "DONE" and press "Select."

    Rename a Device

    1. From ZigBee Messages, press "Network."
    2. Highlight the device and press "OK."
    3. Press "Change Name" on the Device Details screen.
    4. Use the left-arrow to delete characters, and the down/right-arrows plus "Select" to enter new characters; highlight "DONE" and press "Select" when finished.

    Disband a Device / Disband All

    From ZigBee Messages, press "Network," highlight the device, press "OK," then press "Disband" on the Device Details screen. To remove all devices at once, highlight "Disband All" and press "OK" — Warning: this removes every enrolled ZigBee device; all devices must be re-enrolled afterward.

    Display Options

    Choose up to three ZigBee loads/thermostats to show on the Home screen. From Main Menu → Display Options → OK, highlight a device and press "Toggle" to add/remove its "X" mark (shown = displayed on Home screen).

    Set Time, Date, and Daylight Savings

    From Main Menu → Set Time/Date → OK. Use "Ok" to increment the highlighted value and "Next" to move between values (including DST start/end dates).

    Factory Defaults

    From Main Menu → Factory Defaults → OK, read the warning, then press "Yes" to reset the ZIM to factory settings, or "Cancel" to return to the Main Menu.

    Controlling Loads

    1. From the Home screen, press "Loads" to see the list of available loads.
    2. Use "Next" to highlight a load, "Ok" to select it — showing name, current status, and energy demand (if available).
    3. Press "Change" to cycle the load through its available states.
    4. Press "Options" to enable/disable or edit the load's program schedule.

    Program Schedules

    Each load can follow one of 4 shared time schedules (Schedule 1–4); editing a schedule's time/status affects every device using it. Each schedule has four periods — Morning, Day, Evening, Night:

    • Cycle through Schedule 1–4 with "Next."
    • Press "Change" to modify the selected schedule, read the warning, then "OK" to proceed.
    • Adjust a period's time in 15-minute increments with "Change" (setting a period and the next period to the same time disables that period).
    • Cycle a period's status with "Next," then "Change" to set the load's state for that time.
    • Press "Ok" when the schedule is complete.

    Controlling Thermostats

    1. From the Home screen, press "Temps" to list available thermostats.
    2. Highlight one with "Next," select with "Ok" — displays name, current temperature, cool setpoint, and heat setpoint.
    3. Press "Change" to adjust cool setpoint, heat setpoint, hold status, fan status, or mode: use "UP"/"DOWN" to adjust the highlighted value and "NEXT" to move to the next item.

    Note: On load/thermostat control screens, the display returns to the previous screen automatically if no button is pressed for 5 seconds.
