    Installation manual for the HAI Model 83A00 Power Hub — a general-purpose 12VDC power supply with battery backup, designed to power HAI Access Control Card Readers, Omni Consoles, OmniTouch 5.7 Touchscreens, and other HAI equipment. Available in the OmniLT Series Enclosure (83A00-1) or on a Universal Mounting Plate for Structured Wiring enclosures (83A00-2).

    Overview & Features

    • Connections for any 12VDC devices, up to 5 Amps total
    • Connects up to: 8 Model 75A00-1 Access Control Card Readers (with electric/magnetic locks), OR 8 Omni Consoles/OmniTouch 5.7 Touchscreens, OR a mix of 4 readers + 4 consoles/touchscreens
    • Battery-backed power for readers, consoles, and touchscreens
    • Connections for all Omni and Lumina controllers
    • Supervisory output can be wired to a zone on the HAI controller to signal low battery
    • Connectors for two sealed 12V batteries (4–8 amp-hours each, not supplied)
    • Includes a Universal Switching Power Pack

    Grounding (Critical)

    Each Power Hub MUST be grounded to the controller. The HAI controller and Power Hub(s) must be grounded together to prevent current flowing through the RS-485 data bus (connections A and B). Improper grounding can damage the controller, Power Hub, Access Control Card Readers, Omni Consoles, and/or OmniTouch Touchscreens. Connect the "GND" terminal on the Power Hub (under "CONTROLLER") to a "GND" terminal on the HAI controller.

    Connecting 12VDC Devices

    Any 12VDC devices (up to 5 Amps total) connect to the "12V" and "GND" terminals under "DEVICE 1 – DEVICE 8".

    Connecting Devices That Communicate with the HAI Controller

    Devices connected to "DEVICE 1–4" and "DEVICE 5–8" can share a communications path or be separated, controlled by switch "SW1":

    • Same communications type (all Access Control Readers, or all Consoles/Touchscreens): SW1 = "CONNECT" position.
    • Mixed types (some Access Control Readers + some Consoles/Touchscreens): SW1 = "DISCONNECT" position. Readers must go on DEVICE 1–4; Consoles/Touchscreens on DEVICE 5–8.

    Connecting Model 75A00-1 Access Control Card Readers

    The 75A00-1 requires 4 wires (2 power, 2 communications): connect Red, Black, Gray, and Orange wires to the 12V, GND, A, and B terminals respectively. Only use DEVICE 1–4 terminals unless SW1 is in "CONNECT" position.

    Maximum cable length depends on wire gauge and current draw of the connected door lock. As a reference (24-gauge solid, single positive/ground conductor):

    • Reader only (150mA max): up to 233 ft
    • Reader + electric strike (450mA, 600mA max): up to 58 ft
    • Reader + door lock (800mA, 950mA max): up to 37 ft
    • Reader + door lock (1A, 1.15A max): up to 30 ft

    Heavier gauge wire (down to 16 AWG) or multiple conductors ganged together (e.g. from Cat-5 cable) significantly extends these distances — see the full spec table in the downloadable PDF for all combinations.

    Connect the supplied 4-conductor modular cable between a Power Hub modular connector (J301 or J302) and a serial port (J1–J5) on the HAI controller. The serial port used for access control must be configured for RS-485 (set the corresponding interface jumper JP1–JP5 to the "485" position).

    Warning: Do not connect J301/J302 to a controller serial port if SW1 is in "CONNECT" position AND the Power Hub's controller A/B terminals are also connected to the controller's console A/B terminals.

    Connecting Multiple Power Hubs

    When more than 8 readers are needed, or extra power/distance is required, chain multiple Power Hubs: connect "J302" on the first hub to "J301" on the second, "J302" of the second to "J301" of the third, and so on. Connect "J302" of the last hub to a serial port on the HAI controller.

    Connecting Omni Consoles and OmniTouch Touchscreens

    Requires 4 wires (2 power, 2 communications): connect Red, Black, Yellow, and Green wires to the 12V, GND, A, and B terminals respectively. Only use DEVICE 5–8 terminals unless SW1 is in "CONNECT" position.

    Maximum cable length (reference, 24-gauge solid): 113 ft, scaling up to 724 ft with 16-gauge solid wire. The combined distance between Power Hub↔controller and Power Hub↔touchscreen must never exceed 1000 feet total.

    Note for OmniLT controllers: the Power Hub's "A" terminal connects to the OmniLT's "YEL" terminal, and "B" connects to "GRN" under the "CONSOLE" section.

    Low Battery Indicator (Optional)

    Connect the "LB+" and "LB-" terminals (under "CONTROLLER") to an available zone's "+" and "-" terminals on the HAI controller. Do not use an end-of-line resistor (the touchscreen has a built-in 1K ohm resistor). Configure the zone as "Trouble." When batteries drop below the voltage threshold, LB+ and LB- open, tripping the zone.

    Power Connections

    1. Connect one or two 12VDC batteries: BLACK wire to (-), RED wire to (+). Do not reverse — this will blow the battery fuse. The unit will NOT start on battery power alone.
    2. Plug the Power Pack connector into the Power Hub's "J101" connector.
    3. Plug the Power Pack into an AC outlet (within 5 feet). The "POWER ON" LED should illuminate.
    4. Unplug the Power Pack — the hub should continue running on battery backup; the "POWER ON" LED turns off.
    5. Plug the Power Pack back in — the system restarts and "POWER ON" LED illuminates.
