GoControl/Linear WD500Z5-1 & WD1000Z5-1 Z-Wave Wall Dimmers — Installation Manual

Installation and configuration manual for the Linear/GoControl WD500Z5-1 (500W) and WD1000Z5-1 (1000W) Z-Wave RF-controlled 120VAC wall-mounted dimmers, Series 500. Part of the GoControl family of Z-Wave certified wireless lighting products.

Overview

These Z-Wave Plus-certified dimmers allow remote ON/OFF control and dimming of connected lights, wiring in place of a standard wall dimmer. A neutral connection is required. The dimmers can be included and operated in any Z-Wave network alongside certified devices from other manufacturers, and non-battery nodes act as repeaters to boost network reliability regardless of vendor.

Important: This unit must be added to the network only where it will be permanently installed — proper mesh operation depends on knowing its physical location relative to other nodes. You cannot "test bench" configure this unit and then install it elsewhere.

Safety Warnings

• SHOCK HAZARD — read and understand all instructions before installing. Installation must follow the National Electric Code (US) or Canadian Electrical Code, and it's recommended a qualified electrician perform the work.
• Do not exceed the rated maximum load. Indoor use only.
• Do not install to control a receptacle, motor-operated appliance, fluorescent fixture, or transformer-supplied appliance — only permanently installed incandescent lamp fixtures.
• CAUTION: Do not wire the unit "live" (with power on the circuit).
• GoControl dimmers must be wired to the same line/neutral as the load being controlled — not to any other neutral. If multiple neutrals share a box, separate them to preserve circuit integrity.

Air Gap Switch

Located on the lower-left face of the dimmer. Pulling it out completely removes power to the load (simply turning the dimmer off does not) — this minimizes shock risk when changing lamps. Push it fully back in for the dimmer to operate again.

Installation & Network Setup

Adding to a Network

1. Put your Controller into Discovery/Add Mode, then tap the switch — the LED blinks slowly when in ADD mode.
2. The Controller should indicate "device was added" and the LED stops blinking; the device appears as a switch in the Controller's device list.
3. If addition fails, repeat the steps.

Note: if you have trouble adding to a group, the Home ID/Node ID may not have been cleared after prior testing — first "RESET UNIT" to fully remove it from any network (removing it from a group alone does not remove it from the network; it will still function as a repeater).

To Reset the Unit

1. Tap the top of the switch 5 times.
2. Press and hold the bottom of the switch for 15 seconds — the LED blinks increasingly fast during reset.

Removing from a Network

1. Set the Controller into Removal Mode per its instructions.
2. Tap the paddle 2 times — the LED blinks slowly for 10 seconds to indicate removal.
3. The Controller should confirm "device was removed."

Basic Operation (Local Control)

• Tap the top of the switch to turn the load to its previous ON level; tap the bottom to turn it OFF.
• Press and hold the top to brighten, hold the bottom to dim. When OFF, holding the bottom brings the load to minimum dim level.
• Upon power restoration after an outage, the dimmer returns to its previous known state.

LED Indication (Night Light)

By default, the LED lights when the load is OFF (acting as a night light) and turns off when the load is ON. This is user-configurable via Parameter 3 (see Configuration below).

Remote Control

Responds to BASIC and BINARY Z-Wave commands. Supports the ALL ON / ALL OFF commands, configurable to one of four response modes (respond to both, only ON, only OFF, or neither) via your Controller.

Associations & Central Scene

Supports 3 Association Groups (up to 5 nodes each). Group 1 is the Lifeline (sends unsolicited dim-level updates to the Z-Wave Controller — set automatically on inclusion). Group 2 nodes get BASIC On/Off commands (for switches). Group 3 nodes get Multilevel Switch commands (for other dimmers).

The switch supports the Central Scene Command Class — tapping/holding the paddle transmits a Scene Number and Key Attribute to the Hub in addition to controlling the local load. A single tap fires Key Attribute 0; press-and-hold fires 2 (then release fires 1); double tap fires 3; triple tap fires 4 and controls only the Central Scene command — not the local load or associated devices.

To create associations: learn all devices into the Z-Wave Hub, then tap the GoControl paddle 4 times quickly to enter Association mode (LED blinks twice/second); follow your other device's inclusion/exclusion procedure (1-2 taps for GoControl devices); repeat for up to 5 dimmers/switches within 60 seconds. Association mode times out after 60 seconds or once a node associates.

Configuration Parameters

Dim rate ranges from 10ms to over 4.25 minutes for a full min-to-max sweep, depending on Step/Timer parameter combinations. Each configuration parameter can be reset to default via the Configuration Set command (see your Controller's instructions). All parameters reset when the unit is excluded from the Z-Wave network.

Supports Over-The-Air (OTA) firmware updates when the Controller pushes one.
