  • GoControl LB65R6Z-1 — Z-Wave Smart LED Recessed Retrofit Light Kit Installation Guide

    September 08, 2026 4 min read

Complete installation and operation guide for the GoControl LB65R6Z-1 Z-Wave Smart LED Recessed Retrofit Light Kit, fitting 5" to 6" recessed housings.

    Full text manual (for reference)

Installation and operation manual for the GoControl LB65R6Z-1 Z-Wave Smart LED Recessed Retrofit Light Kit — fits 5" to 6" recessed incandescent or existing LED housings, 650 lumens (65W equivalent).

    Overview

The LB65R6Z-1 is a Z-Wave certified smart LED retrofit kit designed to replace a conventional incandescent/halogen recessed downlight. It's instant-on (no CFL warm-up delay), more energy efficient than incandescent or fluorescent bulbs, and acts as a Z-Wave repeater within the mesh network to help relay commands to other devices.

Important: This unit must be added to the network only at its permanent installation location — it cannot be "test bench" configured and then moved, since proper mesh operation depends on it knowing its location relative to other nodes. For indoor use only.

    Safety Warnings

    • Risk of electric shock — do not open. Risk of fire/electric shock — do not expose to rain or moisture; use in dry locations only.
    • To prevent wiring damage or abrasion, do not expose wiring to edges of sheet metal or other sharp objects.
    • Do not make or alter any open holes in the enclosure or wiring/electrical components during kit installation.
    • This lamp is not intended for use as emergency lighting.
    • Vapor barrier must be suitable for 194°F (90°C). Not suitable for covering with thermal insulation material or mounting on a flammable surface.
    • Keep the lit surface a minimum of 18" (0.5 m) away from any flammable object.
    • Before installation, turn the power to the housing OFF.

    Installation — Recessed Incandescent Housing

    1. If the existing housing has an internal socket plate, remove it. Not all existing 5"/6" recessed housings are compatible — test fit before finalizing installation.
    2. Screw an Edison Base Adapter into the housing's electrical socket.
    3. Set up the torsion springs: for a 5" recessed housing, use the clip closest to the rear of the light; for a 6" housing, use the clip closest to the front.
    4. Hold the fixture up to the housing and press the two electrical quick-connect plugs together. Squeeze the two torsion springs to align them with the housing mounting hooks.
    5. Fit the two torsion springs into the two hooks on the inner downlight housing.
    6. Slide the fixture up into the housing — the torsion springs hold it securely in place.

Installation — Existing Recessed LED Housing

    1. Verify the existing housing has a compatible quick connector.
    2. Hold the fixture up to the housing and press the electrical quick-connect plugs together; squeeze the torsion springs to align with the mounting hooks.
    3. Fit the torsion springs into the housing hooks, then slide the fixture up into the housing.

    Adding to a Z-Wave Network

    1. With the controller in Discovery/Add Mode, turn power to the light fixture socket ON.
    2. The controller should indicate the device was added; the LB65R6Z-1 flashes twice.
    3. The device appears in the Switches list, displaying as a multi-level switch.
    4. If addition fails, repeat the steps.

Note: If you have trouble adding the unit to a group, the Home ID and Node ID may not have been cleared after testing — perform a "RESET UNIT" first. Removing a device from a group does not remove it from the network (it still functions as a repeater); only "RESET UNIT" fully removes it.

    Resetting the Unit

If the primary controller is lost or inoperable: use the wall switch to turn the fixture OFF then ON four times within four seconds. The LB65R6Z-1 flashes twice when the reset occurs. Try moving the unit to a socket closer to the controller if it's initially out of range, then repeat until successfully added, and finally move it to its preferred location.

    Removing from a Network

    1. Set the controller into Removal Mode and follow its instructions to delete the LB65R6Z-1.
    2. Reset the fixture by turning power ON via the wall switch — it flashes twice to confirm removal.

    Basic Operation

Remote control: ON/OFF/BRIGHT/DIM via Z-Wave remote or gateway app. Once added to the network, it can be assigned to a Group/Scene, respond to ALL ON/ALL OFF commands, or be associated with another Z-Wave device.

Manual operation: Flip the wall switch OFF then ON to turn ON. Flip OFF then ON twice within two seconds to turn OFF (leave the switch in the ON position when finished either way).

    Configuration Parameters

    Parameter Length Valid Values Description
    1 — Dim Level Memory 1 byte 0 (default) / 1 0 = full brightness on power-up (default). 1 = resumes last dim level.
9 — Dim/Bright Step Level 1 byte 1–99 (default 1) Step size for brightness change; low = small steps, high = large steps.
10 — Dim/Bright Speed 1 byte 1–10 (default 3) Speed of brightness change; low = fast, high = slow. E.g. at step level 1, setting speed to N seconds takes N seconds to dim to off.

    Z-Wave Plus Features

Contains a Z-Wave 500 Series Module supporting Z-Wave Plus features: turn ON/OFF, dim, add/remove, assign to Group/Scene, over-the-air firmware update, and a Lifeline function that notifies associated modules when a manually-reset device leaves the network.

    Association

Supports one Group with up to five Nodes for lifeline communication. Group 1 should be automatically assigned the controller's Node ID after inclusion (for "manual reset" event notifications). Set lifeline association per your controller's instructions.
