    September 08, 2026 6 min read

Manual for the GE Z-Wave® Certified 4-Button Group/Scene Keypad Controller, Model 45631.

    Full text manual (for reference)

Manual for the GE Z-Wave® Certified 4-Button Group/Scene Keypad Controller, Model 45631 — a battery-powered auxiliary controller supporting 4 groups and 4 scenes, with up to 32 Z-Wave devices per group or scene.

This manual was originally published in Spanish; content below is presented in English for consistency with other manual pages on this site.

    Introduction

Z-Wave technology automates lighting/home control and provides easy remote operation of all your Z-Wave compatible devices. This controller provides control of 4 groups and 4 scenes — up to 32 Z-Wave devices can be included in each group or scene. This is an auxiliary controller and cannot function as the primary/main controller.

Group and Scene buttons are numbered only in these instructions — the physical buttons on the device are not numbered. Amber LEDs behind the buttons provide visual feedback.

    • Left side of a Group/Scene button: turns OFF the selected group or scene.
    • Right side of a Group/Scene button: turns ON the selected group or scene.
    • Press and release to switch to Group mode or Scene mode.
    • After entering SETUP mode: used to add or remove devices from a group or scene.
    • Multicolor LED (green/orange/red) behind the bezel is visible only while the device is in SETUP mode.

    Z-Wave Terminology

    • Primary Controller — the main device used to configure and control your Z-Wave network; only one primary controller can exist, and it's required to add or remove devices.
    • Auxiliary Controller — additional remotes usable throughout the house; cannot add or remove devices from the network.
    • Slave — network devices are either controllers or slaves; most AC-powered slaves also act as signal repeaters.
    • Group — an area/zone; multiple Z-Wave devices can be turned on/off with a single command (e.g. grouping front entry, garage exterior, and patio lights).
    • Scene — activity-based lighting presets across multiple Z-Wave lights, controlled with a single command (e.g. dim living room lights for TV vs. a brighter setting for reading).
    • Include/Exclude — formal terms for adding or removing devices from the network, groups, or scenes.
    • Replicate — copying/transferring Z-Wave network data to a new controller; also used to update auxiliary controllers after network changes are made via the primary controller.

    Batteries

Two CR2032 batteries come pre-installed. Remove the insulating tabs before programming or using the device.

    1. Insert a flathead screwdriver into the small slot at the bottom of the front plate and gently twist to remove it.
    2. Remove the small screw on the battery door; pull the top of the door open (hinged at the bottom).
    3. Slide the old batteries out of the holder.
    4. Install new batteries, observing correct polarity ("+"/"-" markings).
    5. Hold the batteries in place, close the battery door, and reinstall the retaining screw and front plate.

Battery life: typically about one year under normal use, but varies with how frequently the controller is used and how many devices are in controlled groups/scenes — larger groups/scenes drain batteries faster. A dim LED indicates batteries need replacement. Network, group, and scene programming is retained during battery changes.

    • Use only new batteries of the required size and recommended type.
    • Replace all batteries at the same time — don't mix new and used, or different types.
    • Dispose of old batteries promptly and properly — do not burn or bury them.
    • Replace fully depleted batteries immediately, and remove batteries if the product won't be used for an extended period.

    Safety Warnings

⚠ Warning — Risk of Fire, Electrical Shock, Burns.

Controlling Appliances: Exercise extreme caution when using Z-Wave devices to control appliances — operation from a different room, or scheduled events, could cause accidental power-on. Recommendations:

    1. Assign Z-Wave-controlled appliances to device numbers 10-18 on the GE remote — this requires pressing "Shift" first, significantly reducing accidental activation.
    2. Remove appliance-controlling Z-Wave devices from the "All" control configuration (see your GE remote's manual).
    3. Do not include appliance-controlling Z-Wave devices in groups or scenes.
    4. Do not use Z-Wave devices to control electric heaters or other appliances where unattended/accidental/automatic power-on could be hazardous.
    5. Double-check programs for accuracy before use.

Not for use with medical or life support equipment. Z-Wave enabled devices should never be used to supply power to, or control the on/off status of, medical or life support equipment.

    Wireless Range

Building materials affect the wireless range between Z-Wave devices. The table below shows typical example distances from the controller (or Z-Wave repeater module) to the target device — actual home performance may vary:

    Walls/Obstacles Wood Frame, Plastic J-Box Wood Frame, Metal J-Box Brick/Concrete, Plastic J-Box Brick/Concrete, Metal J-Box
    0 (line of sight) 100' 80' 100' 80'
    1 70' 56' 60' 48'
    2 49' 39' 36' 29'
    3 34' 27' 21' 17'

Z-Wave networks are designed to work alongside 802.11 Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and other 2.4/5.8GHz devices. Some 900MHz baby monitors, wireless video devices, or older cordless phones may cause interference — try switching those devices' A/B channel if available.

    Mounting

Configure the controller and familiarize yourself with its functions before mounting. It can be mounted with double-sided tape or screws (with wall anchors if needed; mounting hardware included). If using tape, the mounting surface must be smooth and clean. Ideally mount at the same height as your home's wall switches. The front plate snaps onto the controller body after wall mounting, and can be removed by inserting a flathead screwdriver into the bottom slot and gently twisting.

    Operation

Note: to extend battery life, the controller times out of setup and enters sleep mode if more than 10 seconds elapse between steps of any programming process.

Copying Network/Device Information to This Controller (Replicate)

As an auxiliary controller, network and device information must be copied ("replicated") from your primary controller before you can create or modify groups/scenes. If the primary controller is a GE handheld remote, all network/device info plus the first 4 groups/scenes you created can be copied. With other brands/types of primary controllers, device/network info is copied but not groups/scenes.

    1. Place both controllers next to each other.
    2. Put the primary controller into transfer mode (see its manual for instructions).
    3. Hold the Add and Remove buttons simultaneously until the orange LED blinks twice.
    4. Press and release the left (OFF) side of the Group/Scene buttons in sequence: 1, 2, 3, 4.
    5. The orange LED begins blinking.
    6. When the orange LED stops blinking and the green LED blinks twice, the transfer succeeded.

Add a Device to a Group

    1. Hold Add and Remove simultaneously until the orange LED blinks twice, then release.
    2. Press and release the Add button.
    3. Press and release the Group button.
    4. Press and release the right (ON) side of the Group/Scene button (1-4) you want to assign — the orange LED begins blinking.
    5. Press and release the button on the device you want to add.
    6. The orange LED stops blinking and the green LED blinks twice to confirm success.

Add a Device to a Scene

    1. Hold Add and Remove simultaneously until the orange LED blinks twice, then release.
    2. Press and release the Add button, then the Scene button.
    3. Press and release the right (ON) side of the Group/Scene button (1-4) you want to assign — the orange LED begins blinking.
    4. Press and release the button on the device you want to add.
    5. The orange LED stops blinking and the red LED lights — the controller waits for the next step.
    6. Adjust the device's dimming level.
    7. Press and release Add — the red LED turns off.
    8. The green LED blinks twice to confirm the device was added to the scene.

Note: on/off-only devices (non-dimmable) can be added to a scene in either On or Off mode — e.g. the same light could be ON in Scene 1 and OFF in Scene 2. Step 6 above is skipped for on/off-only devices.

Remove a Device from a Group or Scene

The process is the same for groups and scenes — the only difference is which button (Group or Scene) you press in step 3:

    1. Hold Add and Remove simultaneously until the orange LED blinks twice, then release.
    2. Press and release the Remove button.
    3. Press and release the Group or Scene button.
    4. Press and release the right (ON) side of the button that controls the group/scene, then the device button to remove it.
