    Installation instructions for the GE Security ESL 505 CleanMe® Module — an interface between a 500 Series two-wire smoke detector and a UL Listed control panel.

    Description

    The ESL 505 CleanMe® module interprets a 500 Series detector's trouble (CleanMe®) signal and outputs it to the control panel via relays, letting installers remotely receive maintenance alerts (e.g. detector needs cleaning) before a false alarm occurs. It also flags general detector trouble such as a hardware fault. The module can additionally convert two-wire smoke detectors to a four-wire panel input, useful when a panel lacks two-wire smoke detector loop inputs. Each module accommodates up to 20 smoke detectors.

    Diagnostic LEDs

    • Top yellow LED — Smoke Detector Trouble (CleanMe®): indicates one or more detectors on the loop are dirty or have a hardware fault. The affected detector blinks rapidly (every 1.5 seconds) — see the detector's own installation instructions. Output is via the module's form C trouble relay.
    • Middle yellow LED — Loop Fault Trouble: indicates a problem such as a broken wire that could prevent all or part of the loop from signaling an alarm during a fire. Resolve immediately; the LED resets automatically once the fault clears.
    • Bottom red LED — Power/Alarm: blinks every 9 seconds to indicate power to the loop; latches solid ON during a smoke detector alarm and resets when power drops. Alarm output is via the module's form A alarm relay.

    DIP Switches (on 500 Series detector back)

    Switch Description
    1 ON = 6–12V, OFF = 12–24V
    2 ON = Enables CleanMe®, OFF = Disables CleanMe®

    Important: Switch 2 on the back of the 500 Series detector must be ON to enable the CleanMe® signal.

    Wiring Configurations

    • CleanMe® signal to a separate zone: wire the module so the CleanMe® signal reports to a dedicated panel zone (labeled "smoke detector trouble"), letting an installer remotely distinguish a dirty-detector trouble signal from a general loop fault (e.g. cut wire). All detectors on the loop must use the same voltage range setting.
    • CleanMe® signal as general trouble: wire the module so the CleanMe® signal reports to the panel as a general fire trouble signal. In this configuration, the installer must diagnose on-site using the module's LEDs to determine dirty detector vs. general loop fault. All detectors must use the same voltage range setting.
    • 2-wire to 4-wire conversion: for older combination burglar/fire panels lacking a two-wire smoke detector loop input, the module converts 2-wire detectors to 4-wire panel inputs. All detectors on the loop must use the same voltage range setting.
    • Polarity reversal (two-to-four-wire converter mode): using an ESL 405-01 (24VDC) polarity reversal relay, two-wire sounder smoke detectors (429 series) can be wired so that when one detector alarms, all sound in alarm.

    Module terminals J1–J12 provide CleanMe® relay, Alarm relay, and Supervision relay connections along with detector loop in/out terminals, per the specific wiring diagram for your configuration (see the downloadable PDF for full wiring diagrams).

    Mounting

    • Mounts to a 4-inch square electrical box (not included), minimum depth 2 1/8".
    • Install module wiring per your chosen configuration before securing the module.
    • All wiring must conform to applicable local codes, ordinances, and regulations. The module is powered by the control panel's auxiliary power supply.
