    Installation and wiring guide for the GE/Jasco 45610 (ZW2001/ZW2002) Z-Wave Wireless Lighting Control Auxiliary Switch — a companion switch used to add 3-way, 4-way, or 5-way control to a Z-Wave dimmer or on/off switch.

    Overview

    The 45610 auxiliary switch is a component of the GE Z-Wave lighting control system. It's designed to work alongside a 45607 (ZW3002) dimmer or a 45609 (ZW4001) on/off switch — not as a standalone device. Use it for 3-way control, such as a light controlled from switches at the top and bottom of a set of stairs (one load/lamp and two switches). Two or three auxiliary switches can be combined with a Z-Wave dimmer/switch to create 4-way (one load, three switches) or 5-way (one load, four switches) lighting control.

    The 45610 is not a Z-Wave radio device itself. It is not compatible with Z-Wave on its own and must be used exclusively with a 45607 or 45609 (or similar Z-Wave main switch). It does not act as a Z-Wave repeater. Instead, it communicates with the Z-Wave-enabled main switch through a dedicated traveler wire, allowing manual control of On/Off and dimming from the auxiliary location, and synchronizing lighting status between switches.

    Understanding 3-Way Circuits

    A "3-way circuit" is a circuit with two switches and one load (fixture) — for example, the switches at the top and bottom of a staircase. There are several common ways to wire a 3-way circuit, and it's important to understand your existing wiring before converting it to Z-Wave control.

    One common (though not universal) wiring method routes incoming power through the first switch, then to the second switch, and finally to the load. This is the simplest configuration to convert: Switch 1 is replaced with the Z-Wave auxiliary switch (45610), and Switch 2 is replaced with the Z-Wave main switch. The auxiliary switch does not control current directly — instead it sends a momentary voltage signal down the traveler wire to the main switch, which in turn controls current to the load.

    If you have difficulty identifying your circuit type, or aren't sure it can be converted to Z-Wave control, consult a qualified electrician.

    Correct Wiring for a Typical 3-Way Circuit

    • Line (hot, black) connects to the Z-Wave main switch (45607/45609/45612).
    • Neutral (white) connects to both the Z-Wave main switch and, separately, to the 45610 auxiliary switch's neutral terminal.
    • Ground (green) connects to both switches.
    • The traveler wire (colored, not green) runs between the 45610 auxiliary switch and the main switch's traveler terminal.
    • Load (black, to the light fixture) connects to the main switch.
    • Note: The 45612 does not have a Neutral connection.

    Important: Auxiliary switches must be connected to the same neutral point as the Z-Wave-enabled main switch and the light fixture — never to a different neutral point. If multiple neutral points are joined together in a box, separate them to preserve circuit integrity.

    Installing the Z-Wave Dimmer (45607) or Switch (45609)

    ⚠️ WARNING — RISK OF ELECTROCUTION!
    Cut power to the branch circuit for the switch and light fixture at the breaker panel. All wiring connections must be made with power OFF to avoid injury or damage to the switch.
    1. Cut power at the fuse box or breaker.
    2. Remove the existing wall plate.
    3. Confirm power is OFF at the junction box before proceeding.
    4. Remove the mounting screws from the existing switch.
    5. Carefully pull the existing switch from the junction box without disconnecting the wires.
    6. The Z-Wave dimmer/switch has five wiring connections: LINE (Hot), NEUTRAL, LOAD, GROUND, and TRAVELER. The Traveler terminal is only used for 3-, 4-, and 5-way wiring and must be left isolated if the device is installed in a simple 2-way (single switch and load) circuit. Match these terminals to the wires connected to the existing switch.
    7. Disconnect the wires from the existing switch.
    8. Connect the bare copper or green ground wire to the GROUND terminal.
    9. Connect the white wire to the NEUTRAL terminal.
    10. Connect the black wire running to the lamp/fixture to the LOAD terminal.
    11. Connect the black wire from the breaker panel (hot) to the LINE terminal.
    12. Connect the traveler wire (typically red) to the TRAVELER terminal. The other end of this wire connects to the TRAVELER terminal on the 45610 auxiliary switch. Isolate the Traveler terminal if it is unused.
    13. Insert the Z-Wave switch into the junction box without pinching or crushing the wires.
    14. Secure the switch to the box with the provided screws.
    15. Reinstall the wall plate.
    16. Restore power at the fuse box or breaker and test the system.

    Note: Per UL standards, screw terminals should be torqued to 14 kgf/cm.

    Wiring the 45610 Auxiliary Switch

    For 3- and 4-way control, the 45610 requires three wiring connections:

    • Traveler — carries voltage signals to the main Z-Wave switch, telling it what action to perform.
    • Ground
    • Neutral

    Do not connect the 45610 auxiliary switch to the house's hot (line) wire.

    Important: This switch is designed for use only with copper wire.

    45609 models only: House wiring can be attached at screw terminals or inserted into the holes on the back of the switch housing and secured by tightening the screw terminals. Strip 5/8 in. of insulation for either method (max wire gauge 14 AWG).

    Operation

    With the 45607 Dimmer

    • Press and release the top of the 45610 rocker to turn on the connected light and restore it to its previous brightness level.
    • Press and hold the top of the 45610 rocker to turn on the light and adjust brightness; release when the desired level is reached.
    • Press the bottom of the 45610 rocker to turn off the connected light.
    • Press and hold the bottom of the 45610 rocker to dim the light down; release at the desired level.

    With the 45609 Switch

    • Press and release the top of the 45610 rocker to turn the light on.
    • Press the bottom of the 45610 rocker to turn the light off.

    Safety Warnings

    • This device must be installed per the National Electrical Code and local codes (US) or the Canadian Electrical Code and local regulations (Canada). If unsure how to perform the installation, consult a qualified electrician.
    • Risk of fire, electrical shock, and burns. Use extreme caution when using Z-Wave devices to control appliances — the device may be in a different room than the controlled appliance, and unintentional activation can occur. Recommendations:
      • Assign device numbers 10–18 on your GE remote to Z-Wave controlled appliances, requiring the Shift button before activation, to reduce accidental triggering.
      • Cancel the "All" control setting for Z-Wave devices controlling appliances.
      • Do not associate Z-Wave appliance-control devices with groups or scenes.
      • Do not use Z-Wave devices to control electric heaters or other appliances that could be hazardous if activated unexpectedly, unintentionally, or automatically.
    • Not for use with medical or life support equipment. Z-Wave-enabled devices should never be used to power or control medical or life-support equipment On/Off status.
    • No user-serviceable parts inside this device.
