Installation and reference guide for the GE/Jasco 28172 (model ZW4104) Z-Wave Plug-in Wireless Smart Switch — a two-outlet plug-in module with one Z-Wave controlled outlet and one always-on pass-through outlet.

    Overview

    • One Z-Wave controlled AC outlet for standard incandescent lighting, CFL/LEDs, fans, or small appliances.
    • Remote ON/OFF control via a Z-Wave controller, plus manual ON/OFF control with the front panel push button.
    • One always-on pass-through AC outlet (not controlled by Z-Wave).
    • Space-efficient design — does not block the lower outlet when plugged into the upper outlet of a duplex wall receptacle (assuming the receptacle is mounted with the ground pin down).
    • Plugs and cords for connected devices route to the side, allowing close placement of furniture.
    • Grounded 3-wire power connection for safety.
    • Supports Lifeline (Association Group 1) and advanced Z-Wave Configuration command class settings — adjustable only via a Z-Wave controller supporting that command class. See www.jascoproducts.com/z-waveconfig for the full list of adjustable configurations.

    Outlet Layout

    • A. Z-Wave controlled outlet — remotely turns the connected device On/Off.
    • B. Manual/Program button — single press turns the lamp On/Off; single press also includes or excludes the switch in a Z-Wave network.
    • C. Pass-through AC outlet — always on, not controlled by Z-Wave.

    Setup

    1. Plug the light or device you want to control into the Z-Wave controlled outlet on the smart switch, as indicated by the Z-Wave logo.
    2. Plug the smart switch directly into an available grounded outlet (top outlet of a duplex receptacle recommended if possible). Do not use with extension cords — plug directly into the outlet.

    Manual/Program Button Functions

    • Manually turn the connected lamp ON or OFF (press and release).
    • Add/remove the smart switch from the Z-Wave network.

Adding the Device to a Z-Wave Network

    1. Follow the instructions for your Z-Wave certified controller to include the device in the Z-Wave network.
    2. Once the controller is ready to include your smart switch, single press and release the manual/program button to include it in the network.
    3. Once your controller confirms the smart switch has been included, refresh the Z-Wave network to optimize performance. Refer to your controller/gateway's manual for specific instructions.

Once included, you have complete control to turn your lamp ON/OFF or set dim levels according to groups, scenes, schedules, and interactive automations programmed by your controller. If your Z-Wave certified controller features Remote Access, you can control your lighting from mobile devices as well.

    Excluding and Resetting the Device

    • To exclude: Follow your Z-Wave certified controller's instructions to exclude a device from the network. Once the controller is ready, press and release the manual/program button on the smart switch to exclude it.
    • To reset to factory defaults: Unplug the switch from the receptacle, then press and hold the top button for at least 3 seconds while you plug the switch back into a receptacle. Note: Only use this in the event your network's primary controller is missing or otherwise inoperable.

    Z-Wave Interoperability

This product can be included and operated in any Z-Wave network with other Z-Wave certified devices from other manufacturers and/or other applications. All non-battery operated nodes within the network act as repeaters regardless of vendor, to increase reliability of the network.

    Safety Warnings

    • Risk of fire, electrical shock, and burns. This product has a grounding-type plug with a third (grounding) pin, which will only fit into a grounding-type power outlet. If the plug does not fit into the outlet, contact a qualified electrician to install the proper outlet. Do not change the plug in any way.
    • Controlling appliances: Exercise extreme caution when using Z-Wave devices to control appliances. The Z-Wave device may be in a different room than the controlled appliance, and unintentional activation may occur if the wrong remote button is pressed. Z-Wave devices may automatically power on due to timed event programming. Depending on the appliance, unattended or unintentional operation could result in a hazardous condition. For these reasons:
      • Do not use Z-Wave devices to control electric heaters or other appliances that may present a hazard due to unattended, unintentional, or automatic power-on.
    • Not for use with medical or life support equipment. Z-Wave enabled devices should never be used to supply power to, or control the On/Off status of, medical and/or life support equipment.
    • No user-serviceable parts inside this unit.
