  • GE Interlogix AP950PI PIR Detector — Installation Instructions

    August 31, 2026 4 min read

Installation, mounting, coverage pattern, and pet-immunity configuration instructions for the GE Interlogix AP950PI passive infrared motion detector.

    Full text manual (for reference)

    Overview

The GE Interlogix AP950PI is a passive infrared (PIR) motion detector highly sensitive to moving infrared sources, with superior immunity to RFI, vibration, static electricity, temperature changes, and other false-alarm sources. It accepts either a pet-immune or a standard mirror, and includes masks to modify the coverage pattern for a wide variety of applications.

    Included Parts

    • PIR detector with pet-immune mirror pre-installed
    • Standard mirror
    • Two plastic masks
    • Sheet of adhesive masking labels
    • Cardboard undercrawl window mask
    • One housing screw

    Selecting a Location

    • Mount 7 to 10 feet (2.1–3.0m) high; for optimum detection and pet immunity, mount between 7 and 8 feet (2.1–2.4m).
    • Mount on a rigid, vibration-free surface, oriented so intruder movement crosses the detection pattern fields.
    • Avoid moisture-exposed surfaces and locations with false-alarm sources: direct sunlight, heat sources (heaters/radiators) in view, or strong air drafts (fans, A/C) on the unit.
    • Avoid ambient temperatures below 0°F (-18°C) or above 122°F (50°C).
    • Do not aim at windows or glass doors.

Caution: Discharge static electricity before handling sensor circuit boards — touch a grounded, bare metal surface first, or wear a grounding strap.

    Mounting & Wiring

    1. Separate the front housing from the back housing using a small flat-blade screwdriver on the opening tab at the bottom of the unit.
    2. Remove the appropriate corner/flat-wall mounting knockouts and the cable entry knockout on the back housing.
    3. Strip the cable 2 inches (5cm), pull it through the cable entry knockout, and attach the back housing to the wall with screws (and wall anchors if needed). Do not overtighten.
    4. Select the coverage pattern (see below).
    5. Set the sensitivity, mode, and LED jumpers for the application.
    6. Strip 1/4 inch (0.6cm) of insulation from each wire, insert into the correct terminal, and tighten the screws. Push wires into the strain relief.
    7. Close the unit by inserting the front housing's hinge tabs into the back housing's slots, then swivel closed until it snaps.
    8. Fasten the housings together with the provided screw.

    Selecting the Coverage Pattern

The coverage pattern can be modified to fit specific applications by masking off mirror curtains to avoid false-alarm sources (heaters, air conditioners, windows). Methods:

    • Use one or both plastic masks to block off large coverage areas.
    • Mask specific mirror curtains with the adhesive labels provided (don't use sharp objects to remove unwanted labels).
    • Use the cardboard undercrawl window mask to allow objects within 5 feet (1.5m) of, or directly below, the unit without triggering false alarms.

    Sensitivity, Mode & LED Jumpers

    Jumper Setting Effect
Sensitivity Standard (default) 35 ft (10.7m) range with pet-immune mirror; both pins covered
Sensitivity Increased 50 ft (15.2m) range with standard mirror; either pin uncovered
Mode BI – Bi-Curtain (default) Requires passing two curtains to alarm; both pins covered. Not for single-curtain applications or ranges under 5 ft.
Mode STD – Standard Curtain Requires passing one curtain to alarm; either pin uncovered
LED Enabled (default) Both pins covered; LED lights on alarm only
    LED Disabled Either pin uncovered

UL 639 Listed ranges: 35 ft (Standard Curtain, Standard Sensitivity), 50 ft (Standard Curtain, Increased Sensitivity), 30 ft (Bi-Curtain Mode only). Ranges from 30–50 ft with Increased Sensitivity + Bi-Curtain Mode are not UL 639 Listed.

    Pet Immunity

When mounted properly, the unit provides false-alarm immunity to dogs and similar animals. Immunity depends on the animal's size and coat — a warm-blooded, short-haired dog is less immune than a similar dog with a longer coat. Approximate guidance: long-hair dogs (2" coat) up to 80 lbs, medium-hair (1.5") up to 50 lbs, short-hair (1") up to 30 lbs. Breeds not recommended for pet immunity (use Pet Alley application instead) include Doberman, Great Dane, Greyhound, Mastiff, and Pit Bull types. Pet immunity has not been verified by UL.

    Pet Alley Application

To create a detection-free zone near the floor, mount the unit 3.5 feet (1.1m) above the floor, upside down (detector window toward the ceiling), using the standard mirror with the Increased Sensitivity jumper setting. Use the cardboard undercrawl window mask to reduce ceiling exposure. UL 639 Listed for this application at a mounting height of no more than 3.5 ft with a 30 ft (9.1m) range; greater ranges or mounting heights are not UL Listed.

    Operation

On power-up, the LED turns on and relay contacts open for about 12 seconds, then the LED turns off and contacts close. Thereafter, the LED turns on and relay contacts open on every alarm. Allow at least one minute to settle after power-up before walk testing. When walk testing, walk across the curtains (not directly toward/away from the unit), waiting 10 seconds between passes.

    Maintenance

Walk-test the unit annually. Clean the inside with a soft-bristled brush or compressed air; clean the outside with a damp cloth. Always test after cleaning.
