GE 45604 Outdoor Z-Wave Module — Full User Guide

User guide for the GE/Jasco 45604 (ZW4201) Outdoor Module — a Z-Wave Certified wireless ON/OFF outdoor smart plug module for controlling outdoor lighting or appliances. This guide is translated from the original Spanish-language manual.

Overview

This outdoor module is one component of a Z-Wave control system, designed to work with all other Z-Wave compatible devices. You choose whether to control one room or your whole house, and whether to set everything up at once or add devices progressively.

Important Load Limit

The device plugged into the Z-Wave outlet on this module must not exceed 600W incandescent, 1800W (15A) resistive, or 1/2HP motor.

Do not attempt to repair internal parts of this unit.

Installation

This unit is designed for wet outdoor locations. Do not expose it to direct rain or submerge it in water. Install it at least 3 feet (90 cm) above the ground with the outlet facing downward. When used outdoors, connect the unit to a GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) receptacle with an outdoor-rated cover.

A mounting tab with a keyhole slot is located on top of the unit. Install the included screw at the desired location, leaving about 3/16 in. exposed. Align the mounting tab with the screw head, slide the tab over the screw, and lower the unit until it locks securely in place.

Remote Control

GE Z-Wave remotes support control of individual devices, device groups, and scenes. Other Z-Wave certified remote brands may offer less flexibility in configuring your lighting control network. Refer to your specific remote's instructions for adding and controlling devices.

Manual Control

The push button on the 45604 outdoor module lets you:

1. Manually toggle the connected equipment — this is a toggle switch: pressing the button turns the device ON if it was OFF, and vice versa.
2. Include or exclude the module from the Z-Wave network using your primary controller — follow your primary controller's instructions to access network setup, then press and release the button on the module when prompted. The primary controller should confirm success; if it reports failure, repeat the procedure. Once added to the network, the same basic procedure is used to add the module to groups or scenes (see your primary controller's manual for details).

Note: After a power outage, the 45604 module returns to its last used ON/OFF state.

Advanced Operation

The following advanced parameters require an advanced controller such as the 45601 Advanced Remote (or an equivalent advanced remote from another manufacturer) — basic remotes cannot change this configuration.

ALL ON / ALL OFF Response

Depending on your primary controller, the 45604 outdoor module can be configured to respond to ALL ON and ALL OFF commands in up to four ways (some controllers cannot change the default). Check your controller's instructions for support and configuration steps:

• Respond to both ALL ON and ALL OFF (default)
• Respond to neither ALL ON nor ALL OFF
• Respond to ALL OFF only
• Respond to ALL ON only

Restoring Factory Defaults

All parameters and network settings can be reset to factory defaults using your primary controller to reset the device.

Overcurrent Protection

An internal fuse provides overcurrent protection and is not user-serviceable. Check your home's circuit breakers before concluding the product needs replacement.

Z-Wave Interoperability

A Z-Wave network can integrate devices of various classes from different manufacturers. While every Z-Wave certified product is designed to work with other certified products, your controller must support the relevant device classification to control non-lighting Z-Wave devices. For example, the basic GE 45600 remote only controls lighting-class Z-Wave devices, while the deluxe GE 45601 LCD remote can also control other certified device types like thermostats.

Important Safety Notice — Controlling Appliances

• Exercise extreme caution using Z-Wave devices to control appliances — the controller may be operated from a different room, and pressing the wrong button (or scheduled events) may cause unintended activation.
• Assign appliance-controlling Z-Wave devices to number buttons 10–18 on your GE remote (requiring the SHIFT button) to reduce accidental activation.
• Remove appliance-controlling devices from the ALL control configuration (see your remote's manual).
• Do not include appliance-controlling devices in groups or scenes.
• Never use Z-Wave devices to control electric heaters or any appliance that could become hazardous from automatic, unattended, or accidental power-on.
• Double-check programmed schedules before relying on them.
• Never use Z-Wave-enabled devices to power or control medical or life-support equipment.

Wireless Range

This device meets the Z-Wave standard for direct antenna-to-antenna range in open space: 65 ft (20 m) per the FCC section, though the Specifications section lists up to 100 ft (30 m) line of sight to the nearest Z-Wave receiver. Real-world performance depends on walls between devices, construction type, and number of Z-Wave devices on the network (each device acts as a signal repeater).

• Each wall/obstacle reduces max range by roughly 25–30%.
• Brick, tile, or concrete walls block signal more than wood-stud/drywall construction.
• Metal junction boxes cause roughly 20% additional range loss.

Note: Z-Wave networks are designed to coexist with 802.11 wireless, Bluetooth®, and other 2.4/5.8 GHz devices. Some older 900 MHz baby monitors, wireless video devices, and cordless phones can interfere — many have an A/B channel switch to reduce it.
