    Overview

    The GE 32073 Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) receptacle is a self-test GFCI that protects against ground faults by quickly cutting power when it detects electricity taking an unintended path to ground (for example, through a person's body). This covers models GFR4101, GFR4102, GFR4105, GFR4107, GFR4109, and GFR4111 (item numbers 32073, 32074, 32075, 32076, 40687).

    A GFCI does not protect against circuit overloads, short circuits, or all types of shock — you can still be shocked by touching bare wires while standing on a non-conducting surface such as a wood floor.

    Safety Warnings

    • To prevent severe shock or electrocution, always turn the power OFF at the service panel before working with wiring.
    • Use with copper or copper-clad wire only. Do not use with aluminum wire.
    • Do not install on a circuit that powers life support equipment — if the GFCI trips, it will shut down the equipment.
    • For installation in damp or wet locations, the receptacle must be listed and marked Weather Resistant (WR); use a weatherproof cover in wet locations to keep the receptacle and any plugs dry.
    • Must be installed in accordance with national and local electrical codes.
    • Do not install in an electrical box containing more than 4 wires (not including grounding wires) or cables with more than two wires each — contact a qualified electrician if either condition applies.

    Terminal Identification

    LINE cable delivers power from the service panel to the GFCI — connect to LINE terminals only. LOAD cable delivers power from the GFCI onward to another receptacle in the circuit — connect to LOAD terminals only.

    Installation Overview

    1. Turn the power OFF at the service panel (confirm with a plugged-in lamp or radio).
    2. Identify whether you have one cable (2-3 wires — LINE only) or two cables (4-6 wires — LINE and LOAD) entering the box.
    3. If two cables are present but you can't yet tell which is LINE and which is LOAD: detach and cap one cable's white and hot wires separately, reinstall the receptacle temporarily, restore power, and test with a lamp to identify LINE vs. LOAD by which one still delivers power.
    4. Connect LINE wires: white wire to the White (Silver) terminal, black wire to the Hot (Brass) terminal.
    5. Connect LOAD wires (if present): white wire to the White (Silver) terminal, black wire to the Hot (Brass) terminal.
    6. Connect grounding wire: if the box has a grounding terminal, connect a 6-inch bare copper (or green) 12 or 14 AWG wire from the GFCI's grounding terminal to the box's grounding terminal, and to the cable's bare copper/green wire via a wire connector. If there's no grounding terminal in the box, connect the LINE cable's bare copper/green wire directly to the GFCI's grounding terminal.
    7. Fold the wires into the box, keeping the grounding wire away from the white and hot terminals. Screw the receptacle into the box and attach the faceplate.

    Testing (Step 8)

    1. This GFCI ships from the factory in the tripped condition and cannot be reset until wired correctly with power supplied.
    2. Plug a lamp or radio into the GFCI and leave it plugged in. Turn power ON at the service panel. Press RESET — the lamp/radio should turn ON. If it stays OFF or RESET won't work, the LINE and LOAD connections are likely reversed (see Troubleshooting).
    3. Press TEST — this should trip the device and cut power, turning the lamp/radio OFF. If the lamp stays on, see Troubleshooting. If power cuts off, the GFCI is installed correctly — press RESET to restore power.
    4. If wired per the two-cable (LINE + LOAD) method, plug a lamp into surrounding receptacles to identify which ones lost power when TEST was pressed, and label those "GFCI PROTECTED." Do not plug life-saving devices into any receptacle that lost power during the test.
    5. The red LED on the faceplate indicates the GFCI end-of-life self-test. If the red LED begins to light, the GFCI has stopped functioning and must be replaced immediately.
    6. Press TEST (then RESET) every month to confirm proper operation.

    Troubleshooting

    Turn the power OFF and check the wire connections against the correct wiring diagram (single-cable vs. two-cable configuration). Make sure there are no loose wires or connections. If you rewired any connections, restart the test procedure from the beginning of Step 8.
