    Operating manual for the FIBARO Motion Sensor (FGMS-001) — Z-Wave inclusion/exclusion, installation, associations, earthquake detector mode, LED indicators, and key configuration parameters.

    The Fibaro Motion Sensor (FGMS-001) is a universal, battery-powered Z-Wave multi-sensor that detects motion while also measuring temperature and light intensity. A built-in accelerometer detects tampering, and the sensor can even be configured as a simple earthquake detector.

    Z-Wave Network Inclusion

    1. Open the sensor's casing and unlock the battery by removing the "I'm ready" stripe.
    2. Make sure the device is within direct range of the main controller, and set the controller into learning mode.
    3. Quickly triple-click the B-button — the LED will glow blue.
    4. The sensor will be detected and included into the Z-Wave network; wait for the controller to finish configuring it.
    5. If needed, wake the sensor by triple-clicking the B-button again (LED glows blue to confirm wake-up).
    6. Close the sensor's casing (enclosure lock is marked with dots).

    Excluding from the Z-Wave Network

    1. Make sure the battery is unlocked.
    2. Set the main controller into learning mode.
    3. Quickly triple-click the B-button. The LED glows blue confirming the sensor sent the Node Info command frame.

    Sensor Installation

    1. Include the device into the Z-Wave network (must be in direct range of the main controller).
    2. Install the sensor's holder in the desired location.
    3. If already included, wake it up by triple-clicking the B-button.
    4. Insert the sensor into its holder.
    5. Test operation — verify the LED indicates motion detection.
    6. Confirm the device is within Z-Wave network range.

    Installation Notes

    • Do NOT point the sensor at any heat source (radiators, fireplaces, cookers) or light source (direct sunlight, lamps).
    • Avoid installing in drafty locations.
    • Best placement: a corner of the room, perpendicular to the doors.
    • False alarms can be caused by moving objects (trees, cars, ceiling fans) or moving air/heat masses — if problems persist after ruling these out, relocate the device or adjust the advanced parameters (Parameters 1 and 3 for pet-triggered false alarms specifically).

    Resetting the Sensor

    1. Make sure the battery is in place and working.
    2. Press and hold the B-button for 4-6 seconds until the LED glows yellow (2nd menu option).
    3. Release the B-button, then press it briefly again.
    4. Success is confirmed by the LED changing to red and fading.

    Note: a manual reset does not remove the sensor from the main controller's memory — removing it from the Z-Wave network will trigger an automatic reset.

    Operating Within the Z-Wave Network

    The sensor has a built-in motion detector, temperature sensor, and light-intensity sensor — appearing in the Home Center 2 menu as up to three separate devices, depending on controller software version.

    Associations

    Using association, the Fibaro Motion Sensor can control other Z-Wave devices (Dimmer, Relay Switch, Roller Shutter, RGBW Controller, Wall Plug, or — with Home Center 2 only — a scene) directly, without the main controller needing to relay the command. This allows continued operation even if the main controller is damaged (e.g. in a fire).

    • 1st Association Group — device status; sends BASIC SET frames to associated devices on motion detection.
    • 2nd Association Group — tamper alarm; sends alarm frames to associated devices when tampering is detected.
    • 3rd Association Group — device status reporting; single device only (typically the main controller) — not recommended to modify.

    Up to 5 regular and 5 multi-channel devices can be controlled per association group (except the 3rd group, which is limited to a single device).

    Earthquake Detector Mode

    Set Parameter 24 to a value of 4 to enable simple earthquake detection. Reports of vibration scale (dimensionless) are sent at intervals set by Parameter 22; the first report is sent immediately when vibrations are detected, and reports stop once vibrations cease. The minimum vibration level required to trigger a report is set via Parameter 20.

    Sensor Orientation in Space

    The built-in accelerometer can report device orientation to the Z-Wave controller when Parameter 24 is set to 2 or 3.

    LED Indicators

    • Motion alarm — color varies by temperature, configurable via Parameter 80.
    • Tamper alarm — alternating red-blue-white blinking.
    • Z-Wave Node Info frame — glowing blue.

    Menu / Range Test LED Colors

    • Violet — Z-Wave network range tester
    • Yellow — sensor reset

    Z-Wave Range Test

    1. Press and hold the B-button for 2-4 seconds until the LED glows violet.
    2. Release, then press the B-button briefly again.
    3. The LED indicates the connection quality (see table below); press briefly to exit the test.

    Pulsing green Attempting direct communication with the main controller
    Glowing green Communicates with the main controller directly
    Pulsing yellow Trying to establish a routed connection through repeaters
    Glowing yellow Communicates through other modules (routed)
    Pulsing violet Communicating at the maximum distance of the Z-Wave network
    Glowing red Unable to connect to the main controller or any repeater

    Battery Usage Tips

    Battery life is approximately 2 years at factory default settings. To extend battery life:

    • Lengthen the wake-up interval if it's set too short (recommended minimum: 10 seconds, though shorter can shorten battery life significantly)
    • Reduce the frequency of temperature and light-intensity reports
    • Keep associated devices/controllers powered on — frequent reconnection attempts drain the battery faster
    • When replacing the battery, temporarily remove the 2nd association group or reduce tamper sensitivity (Parameter 20 = 0) to avoid a false tamper alarm
