ELK-M1ZTS / ELK-M1ZTSR — Zone Temperature Sensor Installation Instructions

Installation and application instructions for the ELK-M1ZTS / ELK-M1ZTSR Zone Temperature Sensor / Interface — a temperature monitoring device for the ELK-M1 or M1EZ8 control panel, available with an internal built-in sensor (M1ZTS) or a remote 7' sensor probe (M1ZTSR).

Application

This temperature interface, used with an ELK-M1 or M1EZ8 control, can monitor temperatures up to 1000 feet away, with results/actions programmed using ElkRP rules. The M1ZTSR (Remote 7' Sensor) is best for freezer monitoring or extreme conditions since it lets the interface be mounted indoors in a more suitable environment while the sensor probe reaches the monitored area.

Specifications

Important: The M1ZTS is factory configured to read the internal built-in sensor; the M1ZTSR is factory configured to read the external sensor at the screw terminals. Elk does not recommend converting one model to the other — the internal and external sensors cannot be used simultaneously.

Installation of Zone Temperature Sensor

1. Remove the cover from the interface.
2. Mount the base using #6 sheet metal screws. Note: the interface is not weatherproof — use a weather-resistant box if mounting outdoors.
3. Turn the control panel power OFF.
4. Run a 4-conductor cable (max. 1000 ft.) from the interface to the control:
   • Green wire from terminal ZN on the interface to any unused Zone input terminal on the main M1 (Z1–Z16) or M1EZ8 (Z1–Z8) circuit board — do NOT use EOL resistors on this zone
   • Red wire from terminal +12V on the interface to Aux +12VDC on the control
   • Black wire from terminal NEG on the interface to NEG on the control
5. Replace the cover and turn the control panel power ON.

Temperature Zone Definition

1. Select the zone connected to the interface — only Zones 1–16 on the ELK-M1 or Zones 1–8 on the M1EZ8 may be used.
2. Program the zone's definition to 33 - Temperature Zone.
3. Under Zone Definitions, enable "Fast Loop Response" ONLY — disable all other options. A temperature zone MUST have Fast Loop Response enabled with a response time of 200ms or less.
4. Under Global Definitions > Zones tab, verify the "Fast Loop Response" option is 200ms or less (factory default 40ms requires no change).

Viewing Temperature

It takes ~30 seconds after power-up for the interface to stabilize and transmit a reading. Updates transmit every 17 seconds. The control discards rapidly changing readings — if a reading is more than 20 degrees higher or 9 degrees lower than the last reading, it's regarded as a possible error and discarded.

1. Press the ELK key (enter code if prompted), then press the RIGHT arrow to select the View/Control Automation menu.
2. Press the 4 key (or scroll up) to select "4 - Temperature Sensor," then press RIGHT arrow.
3. The first temperature zone displays with its Name, Zone Number, and reading.
4. Additional zones can be viewed by entering their 3-digit number or scrolling with UP/DOWN. Press * to exit.

Using a Temperature Sensor in an ElkRP Rule

Example: turn on Output 3 for 10 minutes whenever the temperature exceeds 90 degrees.

1. In ELK-RP, open the account, click Automation > Rules > New.
2. Click Whenever > Time Occurrence > Every X Seconds, enter 30 in the Fixed Value box, click OK.
3. Click And > Temperature (near the bottom of the list).
4. Highlight the temperature sensor zone by name, click Greater than, set the value to 90, confirm the °F button is selected, click OK.
5. Click Then > Turn Output On/Off. Highlight Output 3, select Turn On, check the "For" box, enter 00:10:00 (10 minutes), click OK, then Done.

Note: The control does not allow a temperature reading to be used directly as a trigger (to prevent false "runaway" activations from minor fluctuations) — instead, use the AND command to compare a temperature sensor reading against a target value each time another trigger occurs. Compare options are Equal to, Not equal to, Less than, and Greater than ("Equal to" isn't recommended since exact matches are unlikely).

Temperature Text String on a Keypad

1. From the Automation tab, click Texts > New. Type "Outside" in the text string box.
2. Click the Insert box down arrow, select "Temperature Sensor Reading," then select the sensor zone by name and click OK. The text block resembles: Outside|% TEMP ZN15 %|
3. Click Rules > New to write a rule sending this text string to a keypad.
4. Click Whenever > Time Occurrence > Every X Seconds, enter 30, click OK.
5. Click Then > Send Text to Keypad, select "Display the following message," choose the "Outside" text via the drop-down.
6. Select the Area matching the keypad's location, choose whether it may be cleared with *, will display for a time period, or will beep the keypad, then click OK and Done.
