Installation instructions for the ELK-M1KP LCD Keypad — an addressable 32-character backlit keypad for the M1 Cross Platform control panels, with a built-in temperature sensor and optional proximity reader support.
The ELK-M1KP is an addressable LCD keypad for the M1 Cross Platform controls. It features a 32-character back-lit display with adjustable intensity and extra-large character fonts. A plug-in connector on the back accepts an internal proximity reader (ELK-M1PR) or interfaces to virtually any external 26-bit Wiegand compatible proximity reader, enabling touchless arming, disarming, or door strike control.
Ideal mounting height is 50-58 inches above the floor. Ambient temperature 32°-120°F (0°-49°C); avoid direct sunlight. CAT5/CAT6 8-conductor cable is recommended for the data bus (extra wires provide data return paths). Minimum cabling: 4-conductor 22-24 gauge, max 25 Ohms resistance per wire. Device placement beyond 1000' is not recommended. Do not splice or connect wire with control power on.
Keypads are device TYPE 1 on the RS-485 4-wire data bus and each keypad/access module must have a unique address (1-16, or 1-4 for ELK-M1). Keypad 1 is auto-enrolled on power-up; each additional keypad must be assigned a unique address and manually enrolled.
Enrolling: Press ELK, then 9 (Installation Programming), RIGHT arrow, enter Installer Program Code. The first menu is "Bus Module Enrollment" — press RIGHT arrow, the M1 transmits an enrollment message and displays the total enrolled bus modules. Press * or Exit to leave Installer Programming.
Data bus termination is very important. The ideal setup uses 2 home run cables (4-wire) with daisy-chained devices along each; the last device on each cable must have a terminating resistor installed via the gold 2-pin jumper (JP2 on keypads, JP1 on expanders) — place a shorting cap on the 2 gold pins to install a 120 Ohm resistor across data lines A & B. Warning: the RS-485 data bus must never have more than two terminating resistor jumpers installed, or reliability and response will be negatively affected. The ELK-M1DBH Data Bus Hub is the ideal way to connect multiple home run cables.
Every standard ELK-M1KP has a built-in ambient temperature sensor, viewable on the LCD or from another keypad/phone remote, and usable in ElkRP Whenever/And/Then rules to trigger automation (e.g., a fan or pump).
An ELK-106055 external prox reader may instead be connected via an ELK-WO35A cable assembly, spliced into the same J2 connector. The M1KP is also compatible with many other 26-bit Wiegand-compatible reader brands.
Example rule: WHENEVER Keypad 01 Access is Activated THEN Turn On Output 003 for 10 seconds — this could power a door strike.
