    Installation instructions for the ELK-M1KP LCD Keypad — an addressable 32-character backlit keypad for the M1 Cross Platform control panels, with a built-in temperature sensor and optional proximity reader support.

    Application

    The ELK-M1KP is an addressable LCD keypad for the M1 Cross Platform controls. It features a 32-character back-lit display with adjustable intensity and extra-large character fonts. A plug-in connector on the back accepts an internal proximity reader (ELK-M1PR) or interfaces to virtually any external 26-bit Wiegand compatible proximity reader, enabling touchless arming, disarming, or door strike control.

    Installation

    Ideal mounting height is 50-58 inches above the floor. Ambient temperature 32°-120°F (0°-49°C); avoid direct sunlight. CAT5/CAT6 8-conductor cable is recommended for the data bus (extra wires provide data return paths). Minimum cabling: 4-conductor 22-24 gauge, max 25 Ohms resistance per wire. Device placement beyond 1000' is not recommended. Do not splice or connect wire with control power on.

    1. Fasten the mounting plate to the electrical box (or wall) using flat-head screws to prevent shorts to the back of the circuit board.
    2. Splice the Black, Red, White, and Green wires of the plug-in connector to the data bus cable, plug the connector into the keypad, tuck wires into the backplate, and install the keypad.

    Setting the Data Bus Address

    Keypads are device TYPE 1 on the RS-485 4-wire data bus and each keypad/access module must have a unique address (1-16, or 1-4 for ELK-M1). Keypad 1 is auto-enrolled on power-up; each additional keypad must be assigned a unique address and manually enrolled.

    1. Press and hold "*" then F5 for 5-10 seconds until the LCD shows "Exit when done. F1 Set Addr." (or with firmware 2.1.42+, just hold "*" for 10 seconds).
    2. Press F1 to display the current address, enter the desired address (1 to X), then press Exit.

    Enrolling: Press ELK, then 9 (Installation Programming), RIGHT arrow, enter Installer Program Code. The first menu is "Bus Module Enrollment" — press RIGHT arrow, the M1 transmits an enrollment message and displays the total enrolled bus modules. Press * or Exit to leave Installer Programming.

    Data Bus Termination

    Data bus termination is very important. The ideal setup uses 2 home run cables (4-wire) with daisy-chained devices along each; the last device on each cable must have a terminating resistor installed via the gold 2-pin jumper (JP2 on keypads, JP1 on expanders) — place a shorting cap on the 2 gold pins to install a 120 Ohm resistor across data lines A & B. Warning: the RS-485 data bus must never have more than two terminating resistor jumpers installed, or reliability and response will be negatively affected.     Keypad Internal Temperature Sensor

    Every standard ELK-M1KP has a built-in ambient temperature sensor, viewable on the LCD or from another keypad/phone remote, and usable in ElkRP Whenever/And/Then rules to trigger automation (e.g., a fan or pump).

    • Viewing: Press ELK (enter code if prompted), RIGHT arrow to View/Control Automation, then 5 (or scroll) for "4-Keypad Temperature," then RIGHT arrow. Scroll or enter a 2-digit keypad number to view additional sensors; press * to exit.
    • Example rule: Turn on Output 3 (fan) for 10 minutes whenever a keypad's temperature exceeds 90°F — built in ElkRP using Trigger > Time Occurrence > Every 30 Seconds, AND Temperature > 90, THEN Turn Output On For 00:10:00.
    • Adjustment: If the reading seems off (e.g., due to mounting location or an installed M1PR), enter keypad setup mode ("*" + F5 for 5-10s), press F2, and use UP/DOWN arrows to adjust in ~0.3° increments. Press Exit twice to return to normal operation.

    Optional ELK-M1PR Internal Proximity Card Reader Installation

    1. Turn off the M1 master power switch.
    2. Remove the keypad from its mounting plate, disconnect the 6-pin data bus cable, and place it face down.
    3. Locate the 1" mounting hole in the lower-left corner and the 5-pin male connector (J2) beside it.
    4. Position the M1PR in the mounting hole with its 5-wire female cable facing connector J2.
    5. Gently arch the 5-wire cable (per the manual's Detail A) to shorten it enough to plug into J2.
    6. Reconnect the 6-pin data bus cable to J1 and reinstall the keypad on its mounting plate.
    7. Turn the M1 master power switch back on and enroll cards/fobs as described below.

    An ELK-106055 external prox reader may instead be connected via an ELK-WO35A cable assembly, spliced into the same J2 connector. The M1KP is also compatible with many other 26-bit Wiegand-compatible reader brands.

    Enrolling Prox Cards and Fobs

    1. Press ELK, then 6 (Change User Codes), RIGHT arrow; enter a Master user code (PIN).
    2. Enter the 3-digit User Code location (001-099) or scroll with UP/DOWN, then press RIGHT arrow (CHG).
    3. Place a new (not previously enrolled) card/fob near the keypad's right speaker grill, just below the Stay key (read range ~1/8" to 3/8"). Accepted cards trigger 3 beeps and display the 12-digit ID; rejected cards show a low error tone and "Code Not Authorized, Redo" (usually a duplicate code or facility-code mismatch).
    4. Once enrolled, set the credential's capabilities in Menu 02 of Installer Level Programming (Arm, Disarm, Access event, etc).

    Example rule: WHENEVER Keypad 01 Access is Activated THEN Turn On Output 003 for 10 seconds — this could power a door strike.
