Dakota Alert MURS Alert Transmitter — Owner's Manual

Owner's Manual for the Dakota Alert MURS Alert Transmitter, a long-range driveway alarm and real-time trail monitoring system. Uses a passive infrared (PIR) sensor to detect people, vehicles, or large animals up to 80 feet away and transmits an alert to a paired M538-HT or M538-BS MURS radio.

Overview

The MURS Alert transmitter detects movement of objects up to 80 feet in front of the unit. When a person, vehicle, or large animal is detected, it transmits an alert signal to a paired MURS radio (M538-HT or M538-BS).

Safety Warnings

• To maintain compliance with FCC RF exposure guidelines, the transmitter and its antenna must maintain a separation distance of at least 2 inches (5 cm) from your body while transmitting.
• The antenna must be connected while operating — failure to connect the antenna can cause damage to the radio.
• Complies with FCC Part 15: (1) this device may not cause harmful interference; (2) this device must accept any interference received, including interference that may cause undesired operation.

Setup

Open the MURS exterior case to find an antenna, battery pack, and the PIR unit. Attach the antenna to the antenna jack on top of the case.

Power Supply

Powered by 6 AA batteries — good quality alkaline batteries are recommended. Do not mix old and new batteries when replacing. Average battery life is about 6 months under normal conditions; high-traffic areas and cold climates shorten battery life. In cold climates, install new batteries at the beginning of winter.

Installation

For best detection, mount the transmitter on a tree or post about 20 feet back from the area to be monitored, and about 3–4 feet off the ground. To detect smaller animals, the sensor can be mounted closer to the ground.

Alert Signal

The transmitter has 4 different alert signals corresponding to the transmitter's location. Each alert is a voice announcement: "Alert zone one," "Alert zone two," "Alert zone three," or "Alert zone four." If you have more than one transmitter, change the alert zone from the default (zone one) by moving the 4-position slide switch inside the case — the topmost position is zone one, with the other zones located in order below it.

Locating the Radio Transmitter

The PIR case has retention clips on the sides. Push one clip away from the center of the case and lift out the PIR unit and plastic backing to access the internal radio transmitter and its switches (channel switch, sub-channel switch, and alert zone message switch).

Operation

Factory default: Channel 01, Sub-channel (CTCSS) 01.

• Channel selection: The transmitter can operate on any of the 5 MURS channels. Locate switch SW1 and set it to the desired channel. If SW1 is set to "0" it defaults to channel 1.
• Sub-channel (CTCSS) selection: Locate switches SW2 and SW3. SW2 (labeled 0–3) sets the first digit of the CTCSS code; SW3 (labeled 0–9) sets the second digit. Example: to set CTCSS to 38, set SW2 to 3 and SW3 to 8. There are 38 valid CTCSS combinations; setting the code to 39 or 00 disables the sub-code.

38 CTCSS codes are available (Hz values from 67.0 to 250.3), selected via SW2/SW3 as described above. Setting the code to 39 or 00 disables the sub-code.

Warranty

Dakota Alert warrants this product against defects in materials and workmanship for one year from date of purchase. Damage from accident, abuse, act of God, or improper operation is not covered. To make a warranty claim, return the product to Dakota Alert with a note describing the problem, your name/address, and the original sales receipt.
