Channel Vision P-2014 — 1x4 CAT5 Audio Distribution Module Manual

Installation and operation manual for the Channel Vision P-2014 — a 1x4 CAT5 audio distribution module that forms the heart of a Channel Vision single-source CAT5 whole-house audio system, distributing power, audio, and IR control to up to 4 zone keypads.

Overview

The P-2014 is a 1x4 distribution module that delivers audio signals and power to 4 keypads (model A0125). Four IR emitter outputs on the P-2014 allow IR signals detected by an A0125 keypad to control source devices such as CD players and AM/FM tuners. The A0125 acts as the volume control for the A0240 40-watt in-room amplifier.

How Does It Work?

Channel Vision's CAT5 Audio System uses Category 5 cable to distribute power, audio, and IR control signals. Power and line-level audio are delivered to the keypads, which act as volume controls for the A0240 40-watt-per-channel amplifier, which in turn powers a pair of in-wall or in-ceiling speakers. The keypads have IR sensors that detect signals from standard handheld remote controls. These IR signals are transmitted through the CAT5 wire back to the hub or input module, where they activate IR emitters that control the source devices. IR emitters attach directly to the front of the source devices and recreate the IR signals produced by the remote control.

Required Components

• A0125 — 1 per listening zone. Acts as volume control for the A0240 and relays IR information. Mount in a single-gang low-voltage ring or J-box (if required by code). Compatible with decorator-style wall plates; blue LEDs show volume level. The keypad fully mutes when the bottom LED is off.
• A0302 — 1 per every A0125. Transfers line-level audio into the A0240 and takes speaker-level audio from the A0240, connecting it to the speakers.
• A0240 — 2-channel amplifier, 1 per every A0125. Provides 40 watts per channel of amplification to drive in-wall or in-ceiling speakers.

Optional Components

• A0301 — Universal input module. Provides local source input in any room and/or acts as the main system input feeding into the hub. Good for connecting TVs, MP3 players, and computer sources into a zone.
• A0313 — Wall docking station for iPod. Can inject the iPod as a local source input in any room and/or act as the main system input; extracts audio from any iPod with a dock connector and charges it when not in use.
• A0505 — Remote control, compatible with the A0125, P-2044, P-6014, A4603, and many other Channel Vision products.
• IR-3002 & IR-3001 — Single and dual-head IR flashers. Use one head per source to control from a remote room.

Basic System Setup

Make all connections before applying power. Most A/V receivers have a "Tape Monitor" or "Room 2" output that can be used to feed directly into the local input on the P-2014. When using the A0302 with the A0125, place both switches in the "L/R" position. Both 110 and RJ-45 connectors are provided for convenience, but only 4 amplified keypads (1 per zone) can be powered at any one time — the LED indicator next to the active output lights up when a keypad is connected.

Advanced System Setup — Using the A0301 and A0313

The A0301 (generic L/R RCA input module) and A0313 (iPod docking station) can be used as primary system inputs feeding the main hub or as local input modules in each room to override the primary audio source. These local input modules should be installed in the CAT5 line between the P-2014 and the A0125. If audio is present from both the primary and local input, the Priority switch determines which source is heard. If audio is present at more than one input module, the unit closest to the A0125 takes priority and is played through the speakers. Multiple input modules can be installed in one CAT5 run.

P-2014 Special Features

• LEDs light when audio is sensed on the corresponding input.
• The Priority switch determines which input (System or Local) will be heard when audio is sensed from both.
• Expand the system by connecting a CAT5 jumper from the Expansion Output of the first P-2014 to the System Input of a second P-2014, using either RJ-45 or 110 connectors.
• Optional Status power input senses when a connector is plugged in — reserved for future use.
• Keypad connection LEDs light when a keypad is attached: the LED below the connector in use (RJ-45 or 110) lights. If a keypad is attached to both connectors, only the RJ-45 connection is active (the RJ-45 LED glows dimly even when the 110 connector is in use, indicating RJ-45 always takes priority).
• A maximum of 4 keypads (1 per zone) can be powered from each P-2014.

Mounting Options

The Channel Vision P-1300 (Pro-series) is a hinged plate designed to fit a standard 19" rack and is the recommended home for the P-2014 — it hinges open to maintain a clean look and provide easy servicing access. Alternatively, the P-2014 can be mounted in a standard structured wiring enclosure or screwed directly to a wall or flat surface (cut or remove the nylon snap pin and install screws in the empty mounting holes).

Warranty

Channel Vision Technology repairs or replaces any defect in material or workmanship occurring during normal use, with new or rebuilt parts, free of charge in the USA, for two years from the date of original purchase.
