    Network setup guide for Channel Vision DVR systems (including the CVDVR43G500) — covers gathering network info, assigning a LAN IP to the DVR, enabling remote (HTTP) access, setting up Dynamic DNS, port forwarding, and troubleshooting common connectivity issues.

    Step 1 — Gather Network Information

    • Router brand, part number, username, and password.
    • Modem brand, part number, username, and password.
    • WAN IP address (find via a site like ipchicken.com).
    • DVR username/password (defaults: admin / 123456).
    • Whether the internet connection uses a Static or Dynamic IP.

    Step 2 — Verify Equipment & Get Computer Network Info

    • Confirm a monitor is connected to the DVR, and a CAT5 cable runs from the DVR to the router/switch. A USB mouse plugged into the DVR makes setup much easier.
    • On a Windows PC on the same network: open Run, type cmd, press Enter, then run ipconfig /all.
    • Record: the computer's IP address (for reference only — do not enter this into the DVR), the Default Gateway, the primary DNS Server, and the Subnet Mask.

    Step 3 — Configure the DVR Network Settings

    1. Connect the monitor, network cable, and (optionally) a USB mouse to the DVR, then power it on.
    2. Right-click (or use the remote/front-panel menu button) to open the icon menu; select the gear icon, then the page/settings icon.
    3. Log in with the DVR password (default 123456).
    4. Open the network setup screen (DVR + globe icon) and make sure LAN is selected.
    5. Assign the DVR an IP address using the same first 3 octets as your Default Gateway (e.g. gateway 192.168.1.1 → DVR IP 192.168.1.x), picking a host number (2-250) different from your computer's.
    6. Enter the Subnet Mask, Gateway, and DNS Server you recorded earlier.
    7. Click HTTP Setup, assign a port (Channel Vision recommends 5400), and check Enable HTTP Server.
    8. Click OK to save, then OK again to exit the network setup screen.

    Accessing the DVR via Web Browser

    1. Open http://[DVR IP]:[port] (e.g. http://192.168.1.200:5400) in Internet Explorer.
    2. Log in with the DVR username/password.
    3. Accept the prompt to install the ActiveX control (required — must use Internet Explorer 6/7/8/9; IE6 is unreliable). If no prompt appears, go to Tools → Internet Options → Security → Custom Level and set every ActiveX-related option to "Prompt".

    Dynamic DNS (DDNS) Setup

    Used to get a memorable hostname for the DVR instead of tracking a changing WAN IP.

    1. Go to a Dynamic DNS provider's website and create a free account.
    2. Choose a hostname for the DVR under a domain the provider offers.
    3. Set the service type to "Host with IP Address" and use the auto-detected IP address.
    4. Complete registration and activate the service.
    5. Enter the resulting hostname (e.g. customerdvrname.example.com) into the DDNS section of the DVR's network settings.

    Port Forwarding

    Required to view the DVR from outside the local network. In the router's admin interface (steps vary by router), forward the port you assigned on the DVR (e.g. 5400) as TCP to the DVR's internal LAN IP address, then save/apply and restart the router.

    Reference: general port forwarding guides are widely available online (e.g. portforward.com walkthroughs by router model).

    Common Issues

    • 2Wire modem/router combos: don't set a static LAN address on the DVR — use DHCP in the DVR's network menu instead, so the 2Wire router detects the device and allows port forwarding.
    • Router can't port forward: rare, but some routers lack this feature entirely, or have a defective implementation.
    • DVR works internally but not externally: usually caused by (a) incomplete network setup on the DVR (missing DNS, wrong subnet mask), or (b) a double-router setup — you cannot have two active routers on the network if you need external access, unless one is fully disabled and used only as a wireless access point.

    Accessing the DVR — Address Reference

    • Internal (LAN) address: e.g. http://192.168.1.215:5400, http://172.16.1.215:5400, http://192.168.0.215:5400
    • External (WAN) address: e.g. http://64.183.35.213:5400 — never begins with 192.168.x.x. Find your WAN address via a site like ipchicken.com.
