White paper from Channel Vision explaining how to set up free Dynamic DNS (DDNS) so you can view a DVR-C or DVR-N Series DVR remotely over the internet without paying for a static IP address.

    Overview

If your internet connection doesn't have a static IP, your external IP address changes periodically (a dynamic IP), which makes it hard to reliably reach your DVR from outside your network. Dyn's free Dynamic DNS service (dyndns.org) gets around this by mapping a fixed hostname to your changing IP address.

    Setup Steps

    1. Go to www.dyndns.com.
    2. Scroll down and click the "Free Dynamic DNS" option.
    3. Click the "Get Started" icon. (Note: you will need to create a free account with dyndns.org.)
    4. Under "Hostname," choose a name for your DVR. Be sure to select the dyndns.org domain option.
    5. For "Service Type," select "Host With IP Address."
    6. Click "Use auto detected IP Address."
    7. Click "Add To Cart."
    8. Click "Next."
    9. Click "Activate Services."
    10. Copy your new hostname (e.g. customerdvrname.dyndns.org). Your actual DVR web address will use the custom name you chose, not "customer name" — pick a hostname that's meaningful to you.
