Broan-NuTone HRV70/ERV70 Series — User Guide

Overview

This user guide covers the Broan-NuTone Heat Recovery Ventilator (HRV) and Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV) 70-series units: ERV70S/ERV70T (side/top ports) and HRV70SE*/HRV70TE* (side/top ports, ENERGY STAR® certified for Canadian use). These whole-house ventilation systems recover heat or energy from outgoing air to condition incoming fresh air, improving indoor comfort and efficiency.

⚠ Important Cautions

• Keep outside intake and exhaust hoods free of snow during winter — check the unit during heavy snowstorms so it doesn't draw in snow. If it does, run in recirculation mode or turn OFF for a few hours.
• Do not use the unit during construction or renovation, or when sanding drywall — dust can damage the system.
• The electronic control system uses a microprocessor and may misbehave due to external noise or a brief power failure. If this happens, unplug the unit, wait ~10 seconds, then plug it back in.

Defrosting Mode

When outside temperature drops below 23°F (-5°C), heat/energy recovery creates frost in the core. The unit automatically defrosts the recovery core, with defrost frequency varying by outside temperature. During a defrost cycle the unit shifts to maximum speed and the dampers close; afterward it returns to the previously selected operating mode.

Controls

Integrated Control

Located on the upper-left side of the unit. Use the push button to control the unit; the LED shows the current mode.

Booting sequence: each time the unit is plugged in after being unplugged or after a power failure, it runs a 30-second boot sequence. The LED lights GREEN for 5 seconds, then turns RED while the unit checks/resets the motorized damper position. No commands are accepted until boot completes.

If a problem occurs, the integrated LED will blink; blink color indicates the error type (see Troubleshooting below).

Note: when using an optional main wall control (VT4W), the integrated control must be turned OFF.

Optional Main Control (VT4W)

Only one VT4W can be connected to a unit. When power is first applied or after a power failure, the VT4W is in OFF mode by default; activate the push button to cycle modes.

Optional Auxiliary Controls (up to 5 can be connected)

• 20-minute lighted push button: press once to activate 20 minutes of high-speed air exchange with the outside (indicator lights); press again to cancel early and return to the previous setting.
• 60-minute crank timer: runs the unit at high speed for 10–60 minutes, adjustable via the dial.
• Dehumidistat: adjust the knob to the desired maximum indoor humidity level. Caution: do not select a level below 30% — this can cause excessive dryness and occupant discomfort.

Maintenance

⚠ Warning: risk of electric shock. Always turn off and unplug the unit before performing maintenance. Sharp edges may be present — wear safety glasses and gloves.

Inner parts to know: (1) Heat or energy recovery core, (2) Core filters.

Quarterly Maintenance

1. Turn the unit OFF and unplug it.
2. Remove the unit door: take out both door lower machine screws (No. 8-32 x 1"), open, and lift out the door.
3. Slide out both filters and the recovery core.
4. Clean the inside walls with a clean damp cloth, then wipe dry.
5. Remove dust from filters and core with a vacuum and soft brush attachment.
6. Wash both core filters under lukewarm water with mild soap, rinse thoroughly, and let dry completely before reinstalling.
7. Follow the instructions on the core label to reinstall it correctly, then slide the core and cleaned filters back in.
8. Reinstall the door with the previously removed screws and plug the unit back in. (The unit returns to its previous setting after the 30-second boot delay.)

Annual Maintenance

Perform the Quarterly Maintenance steps, plus clean the recovery core per the core label:

• HRV units: soak the heat recovery core in lukewarm water with mild soap, rinse thoroughly, shake to remove excess water, and let dry.
• ERV units: remove dust from the core with a vacuum and soft brush attachment.
• All units: after reinstalling the core, filters, and door, clean the exterior hoods.

Troubleshooting

⚠ Warning: never open the electronic box — no user-serviceable parts inside, including a fuse that should never be user-replaced. Refer servicing to qualified personnel.

If the unit malfunctions, first try resetting by unplugging for one minute, then replugging.
