User guide for the Broan-NuTone HRV70/ERV70 series Heat and Energy Recovery Ventilators — controls, defrosting, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
This user guide covers the Broan-NuTone Heat Recovery Ventilator (HRV) and Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV) 70-series units: ERV70S/ERV70T (side/top ports) and HRV70SE*/HRV70TE* (side/top ports, ENERGY STAR® certified for Canadian use). These whole-house ventilation systems recover heat or energy from outgoing air to condition incoming fresh air, improving indoor comfort and efficiency.

When outside temperature drops below 23°F (-5°C), heat/energy recovery creates frost in the core. The unit automatically defrosts the recovery core, with defrost frequency varying by outside temperature. During a defrost cycle the unit shifts to maximum speed and the dampers close; afterward it returns to the previously selected operating mode.
Located on the upper-left side of the unit. Use the push button to control the unit; the LED shows the current mode.
| Press Push Button | LED Color | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Once | Amber | Unit on LOW speed |
| Twice | Green | Unit on HIGH speed |
| Three times | No light | Unit OFF |
Booting sequence: each time the unit is plugged in after being unplugged or after a power failure, it runs a 30-second boot sequence. The LED lights GREEN for 5 seconds, then turns RED while the unit checks/resets the motorized damper position. No commands are accepted until boot completes.
If a problem occurs, the integrated LED will blink; blink color indicates the error type (see Troubleshooting below).
Note: when using an optional main wall control (VT4W), the integrated control must be turned OFF.
Only one VT4W can be connected to a unit. When power is first applied or after a power failure, the VT4W is in OFF mode by default; activate the push button to cycle modes.
| Light Color | Mode | Suggested Use |
|---|---|---|
| Green | Intermittent | Away from home for a few days, or when indoor air is too dry (heating season) or too humid (cooling season). Unit runs OFF 40 min/hr, ventilates at minimum speed for 20 min/hr. |
| Yellow | Min | Minimum ventilation speed for normal daily operation. |
| Red | Max | Maximum ventilation speed for excess pollutants/humidity (parties, odors, smoke, etc.) |
| No light | Off | Turn off before performing maintenance. |
⚠ Warning: risk of electric shock. Always turn off and unplug the unit before performing maintenance. Sharp edges may be present — wear safety glasses and gloves.
Inner parts to know: (1) Heat or energy recovery core, (2) Core filters.
Perform the Quarterly Maintenance steps, plus clean the recovery core per the core label:
⚠ Warning: never open the electronic box — no user-serviceable parts inside, including a fuse that should never be user-replaced. Refer servicing to qualified personnel.
If the unit malfunctions, first try resetting by unplugging for one minute, then replugging.
| Problem | Try This |
|---|---|
| Unit does not work | Check the unit is plugged in and receiving power from the house circuit breaker/fuse. |
| Condensation on windows (air too humid) | Review Controls section settings. Leave curtains half-open for air circulation. Store firewood in a dehumidified/ventilated room or outside. Don't set the heating thermostat below 64°F (18°C). |
| Inside air too dry (cold season) | Review Controls settings; temporarily use a humidifier. |
| Air too cold at supply grille (cold season) | Check exterior hoods (especially the exhaust) for blockage. Review Controls settings. Consider installing a duct heater. |
| Integrated control LED blinking GREEN | Thermistor problem — unit still works but will defrost frequently. Contact your installer. |
| Integrated control LED blinking AMBER | Motorized damper problem — unit is OFF and tries to reset the damper every 30 minutes for 2.5 hours before giving up. Contact your installer. |
| Integrated defrost push-button doesn't work | The 30-second boot sequence hasn't completed — see Integrated Control section. |
