BlueSpray Irrigation Controller — Installation & Usage Guide

Full installation and usage guide for the BlueSpray web-enabled Wi-Fi irrigation controller (model BYBSCx), including wiring, the optional garage door kit, and full configuration of zones, programs, seasons, and schedules.

Overview

BlueSpray is a web-enabled irrigation controller with built-in Wi-Fi, an intuitive browser-based user interface, flexible scheduling, and unlimited programs and start times. Instead of dials and buttons, you control BlueSpray from a computer or smartphone — there is no app to install. BlueSpray can also adjust watering to seasonal and current weather conditions, and when used with a rain or soil sensor can save as much water as any "Smart" controller, without extra fees. The base model supports up to 8 zones; with optional expansion boards, one controller can support up to 24 (residential) or 128 (commercial) zones.

Mounting the Controller

The BlueSpray controller should be mounted indoors only (an optional weatherproof case is available for outdoor mounting — contact support@bluespray.net).

Tools needed: drill, level, #2 Phillips screwdriver.

1. Mount the 2 provided large screws into the wall (use wall anchors if needed), leaving about 1/8" between the screw head and wall. Ensure the screws are level.
2. Hang the controller box on the two screws and slide it down onto them. If loose, remove and tighten the mounting screws slightly.
3. Open the controller access door and use the third screw to secure the controller in place.

Wiring the Controller

Tools needed: 1/4" flat-head slotted screwdriver.

1. Connect the valve wires to the zone terminals marked 1 through 8. Zones are ordered left to right, top to bottom. If your controller has more than 8 zones, it will have one or more expansion boards under the main board.
2. Terminal layout: RAIN, DOOR, RSVD (reserved), zone terminals 1–8, M (master valve), COM (common), 24V, COM, AUX1, AUX2.
   • Connect the master valve wire (if applicable) to terminal M.
   • Connect the common wire to terminal COM.
   • Connect sensor wires (rain/door) to the appropriate terminals — polarity does not matter for these.
   Caution: do not connect a valve wire to the first terminal on an expansion board — that terminal is used by the 24V AC power supply. Use terminals 1–8 only.
3. Route the wires through the bottom of the controller box and close the access door.
4. Connect the power wire from the supplied power supply to the 24V and COM terminals.
5. Ensure the status switch is in the up (NORMAL) position.
6. Plug in the power supply — the green power light comes on. The amber status light comes on for a few seconds, then starts blinking once the controller has started. You're now ready to configure it.

Installing the Optional Garage Door Kit

Mounting the Garage Door Sensor

The two-piece sensor (one with a wire terminal, one with a magnet) attaches to the garage door to detect open/closed state.

1. Close the garage door and locate a mounting spot on the wall or door frame.
2. Mount the piece with the wire terminal on the wall or frame.
3. Mount the piece with the magnet on the garage door, aligned with the other piece. The two pieces must be no more than 1" apart when the door is closed. After mounting, open and close the door to confirm the pieces move freely without colliding.

Connecting the Garage Door Sensor

1. Slide the status switch down.
2. Turn off the controller by unplugging the AC power supply.
3. Connect the two wires from the garage door sensor to the Door sensor terminal on the controller.
4. Connect the two wires from the door switch relay terminal to either the garage door switch or the terminals on the garage door motor.
5. Slide the status switch back up to return to normal mode.

Status Lights & Switch

• Normal mode — slide the switch up.
• Default mode — slide down for at least 10 seconds, back up within 30 seconds. Restores default network settings while keeping all programs/schedules; useful to reconnect if network settings are changed or lost.
• Service mode — slide down and leave down; after 30 seconds the controller enters Standalone mode with SSID "bluespray", no encryption, no password — lets a technician access it for manual runs and configuration (configuration changes are blocked in this mode, but you can water).

Connecting to the BlueSpray User Interface

1. On your computer, view available wireless networks and look for the network named bluespray.
2. Connect to it (no password required).
3. Open a web browser and navigate to http://192.168.1.1.

Once connected to your home network in Internet mode, the controller can be reached from any computer on that network at http://my.bluespray.net.

Status Panel

• Connection Status — shows whether your browser is connected to the controller.
• Controller Status — On (operating normally), Standby (all watering suspended until returned to normal mode), or Delayed (watering temporarily suspended, typically due to a triggered rain sensor or manual delay). Click the Power button to toggle normal/standby mode.
• Controller's Time — click the Sync button to synchronize with your computer's time.
• Today's Runs — grey (scheduled, not yet run), green (running now), crossed-out grey (already run), crossed-out red (cancelled). Click the magnifying glass for run details, or X to cancel. Click the faucet button or any zone icon to start a manual run.
• Current Season — shows the active season and its water budget.
• Rain Sensor (if installed) — Inactive (dry) or Active (wet/triggered).
• Door Sensor (if installed) — shows garage door status; when open, shows the scheduled auto-close time (editable for the current day). Click the garage button to open/close manually.

Configuring BlueSpray

Zones

A zone is a group of sprinkler heads watering part of your lawn. On the Lawn View tab, drag the sprinkler head icon onto the lawn to create a zone; right-click (or press-and-hold on touch devices) to edit its name and Active status (disabling prevents watering, useful if a head is malfunctioning). Drag zone icons to move them, use the shuffle button to reorder watering sequence, or drag to the trash can to delete. The lock button in the upper right disables click-and-drag on touch devices to prevent accidental moves.

Programs

A program is a set of run times for some or all zones (unlimited programs allowed). Settings > Programs > New: enter a program name and run times (minutes per zone) per zone, then Save.

Seasons

Seasons let you water more efficiently across the year (e.g., more in summer, less in spring/fall, none in winter). Settings > Seasons > New: enter a name, from/to dates, and a water budget percentage applied to the configured run time (e.g., 100% in summer vs. 50% in fall means a 10-minute zone runs 10 min in summer, 5 min in fall; percentages ending in 5 round up).

Schedules

A schedule is a watering run tied to a program. Settings > Schedules > New: enter a run name, start time, the program to run, the season it applies to (default: all seasons/year-round), Active (yes/no), and a run interval — Even days, Odd days, Every X days, or specific Days of Week.

Sensors

Settings > Sensors: for the rain sensor, select type (NO = Normally Opened, NC = Normally Closed). For the door sensor, set "Close after (minutes)" to auto-close after the door has been open a set time, and/or "Close at" to auto-close at a specific time of day. Test the door relay from the Status Panel's garage door button; if the controller can't close the door, it retries at the "Close after" interval (or every minute if only "Close at" is set).

Operations

Settings > Operations: set Master Valve (yes if installed), Delay watering (temporarily suspends all scheduled watering for X days — manual watering still works), Bypass Rain Sensor (resume all runs if the rain sensor malfunctions), and Stack runs (Yes recommended for residential systems — overlapping runs are rescheduled sequentially rather than running in parallel, which can otherwise starve water pressure). Also set the lawn picture and zone text color here.

Weather Options

Requires Internet mode and controller registration. Settings > Weather: configure "Chance of rain is at least" (skip watering if rain likely), "Extend rain forecast to" (look further ahead), "Temperature is less than" (skip if too cold), and "Wind speed is greater than" (skip if too windy). Forecast data comes from NOAA based on ZIP code — use as a guideline only.

System Information

Settings > System: set a descriptive Controller Name; Wi-Fi settings (Operating Mode, Network SSID, Encryption type, Key); time settings (Time zone, NTP servers); and security settings (Enable login, Login Name, Password). The controller syncs time on startup if it can't reach the Internet; if the clock needs syncing after a power loss, the amber light will blink until you connect.

Standalone Mode vs. Internet Mode

BlueSpray works with or without an Internet connection. Without one, use Standalone mode — you can still fully configure, monitor, and run the system locally once set. With Internet access, you gain weather-based adjustments, remote access, and automatic time syncing (with automatic Daylight Saving adjustment). If you can't reach the controller on your home network, check wireless signal strength, or reset to default mode (see Status Switch above).

Updating Firmware

1. Download the latest firmware image from www.bluespray.net/support.html and save it locally.
2. Settings > Administration > Firmware update > Browse, select the file, and click OK.

The update takes about two minutes — do not disconnect power during the update.

Restarting the Controller

Settings > Administration > Restart Controller.

Calendar & History

Use the Calendar tab to see scheduled runs for the week (Next button to advance). Use the History tab to view watering history for the past 7 days, past 30 days, last week, or last month — logs are kept for up to one year, with the left column showing minutes watered per day.

Registering the BlueSpray Controller

Registering (via the Register button on the Weather tab) enables automated weather forecast adjustments and remote access to your controller through the BlueSpray website without needing to set up DNS.

1. Click Register on the Weather tab.
2. Enter the controller's address, city, state, and ZIP code (used for accurate NOAA weather data).
3. Enter account information (name, email, password) or select "Use existing account" if you already have one.
4. Click Submit.

Using the Controller

Watering a Zone Manually

1. Open the BlueSpray user interface.
2. Click the zone icon on the lawn.
3. Enter the number of minutes to water.
4. Click OK.

Changing the Lawn Picture

Use a picture of your actual lawn or a similar one from BlueSpray's collection (www.bluespray.net/lawns), a Google Earth/Maps screenshot, or your own aerial photo. The picture must be 4x3 aspect ratio, at least 800x600 pixels, and hosted online (e.g., Imgur, Google+, Flickr).

1. Find or host a picture and copy its URL.
2. Settings > Operations > Lawn picture — enter the URL.
3. Click OK.

Troubleshooting

Can't connect to the controller: if you suspect incorrect network settings were entered during setup, reset to default network settings by sliding the status switch down for 10–30 seconds, then back up. Then reconnect per the "Connecting to the BlueSpray User Interface" steps above.
