Owner's manual for the AprilAire Model S86W MUPR Wi-Fi Thermostat with IAQ (Indoor Air Quality) control — covering setup, operation, indoor air quality functions, program schedules, and Wi-Fi maintenance.

Quick Reference — Controls & Display

Home Screen shows: Equipment Status, Room Temperature, Room Temperature Setting, Event Status, Up/Down Arrows (adjust temperature), Back button, and Select button (opens the Main Menu).

Main Menu options (availability depends on installed options): Mode, Fan, Hold, Schedule, Heat Blast, Away, Humidifier, Dehumidifier, Ventilation, Air Cleaning, Vacation, Settings.

Screen Saver: Starts 45 seconds after inactivity; press any button to wake. Displays current time, room temperature, indoor RH%, and outdoor temperature.

Wi-Fi Setup & Remote Access

For detailed instructions on connecting the thermostat to a Wi-Fi network and registering it to an AprilAire account, refer to the Wi-Fi Quick Start Guide included in the box, or visit aprilaire.com/app.

Operation

Select System Mode (Em Heat / Heat / Cool / Auto / Off)

1. Press SELECT to enter the Main Menu.
2. Use the arrows to select the Mode option, then press SELECT to enter the Mode menu.
3. Use the arrows to choose the desired mode:
   • Heat: controls only the heating system
   • Cool: controls only the cooling system
   • Auto (if enabled in installer setup): automatically selects heating or cooling based on indoor temperature
   • Emergency Heat (heat pumps with auxiliary heat only): controls auxiliary heat; the heat pump will not operate in Em Heat mode
   • Off: heating and cooling systems are off
4. Press SELECT to save and return to the home screen, or BACK to exit without saving.

Change Temperature Setting

1. From the Home screen, press the up/down arrows to adjust the current temperature setting (it enlarges during adjustment).
2. The new setting takes effect 3 seconds after the last adjustment, or press SELECT to save immediately and return home.

Select Fan Setting (Auto / On / Circulate)

When the fan mode is changed during a program event, it remains in that mode until the next scheduled event starts. To run the fan continuously through all events, program it as "On" in the schedule.

1. Press SELECT > select Fan > press SELECT to enter the Fan menu.
2. Choose the desired mode:
   • On: fan runs continuously — maximum air circulation/filtering
   • Auto: fan runs only when heating or cooling is active
   • Circulate: same as Auto, but guarantees the fan runs at least 30 minutes per hour — a balance of energy savings and air circulation/cleaning
3. Press SELECT to save, or BACK to exit without saving.

Maintenance Reminders

Set up by the installer to indicate when equipment is due for service. If a reminder displays, call your HVAC dealer. Reminders can be reset via the Reset option on the message, or in the Reset Service Reminders option under Settings.

Lockout

The user can disable access to the thermostat's features (see User System Settings Table below). Override the lockout at any time by pressing and holding SELECT for 7 seconds.

Indoor Air Quality Functions

Event-Based™ Air Cleaning (if installed)

Air Cleaning has two temporary events and three persistent modes; it activates the fan for the purpose of air cleaning.

Events (temporary):

• 3 Hrs: runs for 3 hours continuously, then returns to the most recent mode (Auto, Continuous, or Off) — useful for cleaning air as needed (e.g. after vacuuming).
• 24 Hrs: runs continuously for 24 hours before returning to the most recent mode — useful during high seasonal allergy/poor outdoor air quality periods.

Modes (persistent):

• Auto: runs a minimum of 30 minutes per hour; monitors heating/cooling runtime and automatically turns on if 30 minutes isn't reached, maximizing air cleaning while minimizing energy use.
• Continuous: maximum air cleaning — active 24/7.
• Off: the air cleaner will not run the fan solely for air cleaning purposes (though normal fan operation during heating/cooling/IAQ events still cleans air if installed).

Humidifier Control (if installed)

Configured by the installer to run in Automatic or Manual mode.

Automatic Mode: the thermostat automatically adjusts relative humidity based on outdoor temperature to provide as much humidity as possible while avoiding window condensation. Since the humidity setting needs to start low to determine your home's limits:

1. Set the humidity setting to 3 (low-normal range) initially. Over the next 24–48 hours, adjust for more or less humidity based on comfort and home construction.
2. During the coldest days of the first heating season, minor adjustments may be needed depending on windows/insulation — after that, it should not require further seasonal adjustment.

Manual Mode: anticipate outdoor temperature drops/increases to maintain humidity while avoiding condensation. Use the recommended relative humidity table below, adjusting as needed (possibly several times per day during the heating season):

Dehumidifier Control (if installed)

Configured by the installer to control dehumidification via a whole-home dehumidifier or the air conditioner. You can set the desired relative humidity level and turn dehumidification On or Off.

1. Set the dehumidification setpoint to 60% when first installed. Let it run until the initial setpoint is reached before adjusting further.
2. Raise the setting for less-dry air (reduces dehumidification runtime); lower it for more-dry air (increases runtime).

Note: it's common for dehumidification to run for an extended period when first installed, since the home's materials ("acts like a sponge") must dry out along with the air.

If Dehumidification Is Done With the Air Conditioner

The thermostat will cool up to 3°F beyond the cooling setpoint for dehumidification purposes. Overcooling may still not fully meet the dehumidification setpoint.

Energy Saving Tip #1: Set the humidity setting as high as comfortable to reduce dehumidification runtime — lower it if the air feels clammy or smells damp/moldy. Turn the dehumidifier control OFF when windows are open, just as with air conditioning.

Energy Saving Tip #2: When away for an extended period in summer, set relative humidity to 60% and the cooling setpoint to the highest level that's safe for pets/possessions, to control humidity and minimize cooling energy use. Vacation Hold makes this easy (see below).

Fresh Air Ventilation (if installed)

Configured by the installer to run on a predetermined hourly schedule; you can temporarily override it.

Events (temporary):

• 3 Hours: constantly energized for 3 hours, then returns to Auto or Off (whichever was active) — e.g. to dilute cooking odors.
• 24 Hours: constantly energized for 24 hours, then returns to Auto or Off — for days when a large amount of fresh air is desired.

Modes (persistent): Auto — ventilation cycles per installer-set parameters to meet home ventilation requirements. Off — ventilation will not run.

Program Schedule and Holds

Set Time and Date

Select Settings from the Main Menu, then Clock (set time) or Date (set date). Once connected to the cloud, time/date update automatically, including daylight savings.

Understanding Program Schedules

The daily schedule is split into four sections, plus two optional app-only events:

• Wake: temperature preferred upon waking
• Leave: temperature while away from the house
• Return: temperature preferred when returning home
• Sleep: temperature preferred while sleeping
• Event 1 / Event 2: optional additional events, enabled from the app only

Default Schedule

*Event 1 and 2 are optional, enabled from the app. These defaults can be changed to fit your schedule; we recommend the defaults since they help reduce heating/cooling expenses.

Progressive Recovery

Allows Pre-Heating or Pre-Cooling prior to a scheduled event so the desired temperature is reached exactly at the start of that event. Example: with a Wake time of 6:00 AM and Wake heat setpoint of 70°F (Sleep setpoint 62°F), the heat turns on before 6:00 AM so the temperature reaches 70°F right at Wake time.

How to Modify Program Schedules

1. From the Schedule option in the Main Menu, turn the schedule On/Off, or select Modify to change settings.
   • Modify: adjust event start time, temperature, fan mode, and controlling sensor (if installed) for each event of each day.
   • On/Off: when Off, the thermostat holds the current temperature setting until manually adjusted.
2. Select the group of days or single day to modify.
3. Adjust Wake details (Start, Heat, Cool, Fan, Sensors) and select Next.
4. Adjust Leave, Return, and Sleep details similarly, selecting Next after each.
5. If you modified a group of days, confirm and choose Save & Exit or Cancel. If you modified a single day, you can copy the settings to another day or group of days.
6. If copying, confirm the copy — then choose Edit More Days (return to Modify menu) or Save and Exit (return to Home screen).

Heat Blast® (if installed)

Raises the current room temperature 3°F to 5°F (per installer setup), then resumes normal operation. To activate, select Heat Blast from the Menu and toggle ON; toggle OFF to cancel.

Note: Heat Blast is only available if enabled in Installer Setup and the thermostat is in Heat or Emergency Heat mode.

Program Schedule Holds

Temporary Hold: press the up/down arrows to immediately adjust the temperature while the schedule is running — this holds the setting until the next scheduled event. Also settable/adjustable (including end time) from the Hold option in the Menu. Cancel by adjusting back to the scheduled temperature or via the Hold option.

Away: sets the thermostat to a predefined setpoint via the Away button (app or thermostat Menu). Defaults: cooling 85°F (29.5°C), heating 62°F (16.5°C), fan Auto — all adjustable in Settings > Away. Cancel from the Away option in the Menu.

Vacation: suspends the programmed schedule for an extended period, maintaining a selected temperature/dehumidification setpoint until the vacation end date/time, after which the normal schedule resumes. If you return early, cancel via the Vacation option in the Menu.

Wi-Fi Maintenance and Troubleshooting

Clearing Router Settings

If you get a new router or change its security settings, clear the thermostat's stored Wi-Fi settings via Menu > Settings > Wi-Fi > Disconnect, then follow the Wi-Fi Quick Start Guide to reconnect. This does not remove the thermostat from your user account.

Removing the Thermostat from a User Account

The thermostat can only be registered to one account at a time. To move it to a new account (e.g., after buying a home), go to Menu > Settings > Wi-Fi > Advanced > Unregister — this removes it from any current account. Then follow the Wi-Fi Quick Start Guide to register it to a new account.

Disabling the Wi-Fi Radio

Go to Menu > Settings > Wi-Fi > Advanced > Wi-Fi ON/OFF, select OFF, and press SELECT. This turns off the radio while keeping network settings intact. Reverse the same steps (select ON) to turn it back on.

Troubleshooting Wi-Fi Connection

Wi-Fi connection status is shown via the radio strength indicator in Menu > Settings > Wi-Fi.

Limited Warranty

The Research Products Corporation AprilAire® Thermostat is warranted for five (5) years from date of installation against defects in materials or workmanship. RPC's exclusive obligation is to supply a free replacement for any thermostat found defective within this period, if returned (with installation date documentation) within 30 days after the 5-year period, to your original supplier or to Research Products Corporation, Madison, Wisconsin 53701.

This warranty does not cover labor costs or defects in workmanship/materials furnished by your installer (as opposed to defects in the thermostat itself). Implied warranties of merchantability or fitness are limited to the 5-year period. Liability for incidental/consequential damages (other than personal injury) is excluded. This warranty is void if the thermostat was not installed by a qualified HVAC contractor.
