    Full text manual (for reference)

Complete safety, installation, and reference guide for the AprilAire Model S86W MUPR Wi-Fi Thermostat with Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) control.

    Installation Location Recommendations

    Mount the thermostat:

    • On an interior wall, in a frequently occupied space
    • Approximately 5 feet above the floor
    • At least 18" from an outside wall
    • Can be mounted to a vertical junction box

    Do not mount the thermostat:

    • Behind doors, in corners, or other dead air spaces
    • In direct sunlight, near lighting fixtures, or heat-emitting appliances
    • On an outside or unconditioned area wall
    • In the flow of a supply register, in stairwells, or near outside doors
    • On a wall with concealed pipes or ductwork

    Outdoor Temperature Sensor (Included)

Attach the included 8052 sensor to terminals T1 and T2 (must be enabled in the installer setup menu). Heat pump models use it to lock out/enable auxiliary vs. heat pump heating based on Low/High Balance Points. IAQ functions use it to prevent condensation and control ventilation lockout.

Mount the outdoor sensor: on the north side of the building (out of direct sun), above the snow line, at least 3 feet from exhaust vents/condensing lines, using less than 300 ft of wire, not routed along 120VAC lines.

    Remote Temperature Sensor (Optional)

An 8051 (flush mount) or 8053 (surface mount) sensor can be attached to T1/T2 for control from a concealed location, or averaged with the internal sensor for large spaces. Must be enabled in installer setup. Follows the same mounting guidance as the thermostat itself (avoid direct sun, dead air spaces, 120VAC lines, concealed pipes/ductwork).

    Wireless Sensors

    • Model Z10IDT (Indoor Temperature and Humidity Sensor) — up to 8 can connect; automatically averaged, or individually selected for scheduled events.
    • Model Z10ODT (Outdoor Temperature and Humidity Sensor) — one can connect.

    Thermostat Mounting

    1. Remove the rear mounting plate from the thermostat.
    2. Pull wires through the opening on the back of the mounting plate.
    3. Position and level the mounting plate on the wall, mark hole locations.
    4. Insert and tighten the supplied self-drilling anchors (drywall only).
    5. Place the mounting plate over the anchors, insert and tighten screws.
    6. Seal wire entry holes to prevent drafts from affecting temperature readings.

    Power and Reset

Powered by 24VAC. Maintains the clock for 2 hours on power loss (memory backup saves settings during interruption). Can be reset to factory defaults from the installer settings menu. Note: factory reset does not clear thermostat account info from the AprilAire Wi-Fi app — remove the thermostat from the app or use the unregister option in Wi-Fi settings to clear that.

    Wiring Terminals

    Terminal Function
    RH 24VAC supply heating*
    RC 24VAC supply cooling*
W First stage heat (conventional) / First stage auxiliary (heat pump)
Y First stage cooling (conventional) / First stage compressor (heat pump)
    G Fan
    C Common
    O/B Reversing valve
L System fault indicator (optional, heat pump only)
W2 Second stage heat (conventional) / Second stage auxiliary (heat pump)
Y2 Second stage cooling (conventional) / Second stage compressor (heat pump)
    T1 & T2 Outdoor/remote temperature sensor
I1 & I2 Indoor Air Quality control output

*Jumper between RC & RH is used in single transformer systems. Wire: 18-24 gauge thermostat wire. Ensure power at the HVAC equipment is off before wiring; loosen screw terminals, insert stripped wire, retighten; push excess wire back into the wall opening and plug to prevent drafts.

    Wiring Diagram Types

Full illustrated wiring diagrams for each configuration are in the downloadable PDF. Covered configurations:

    • Single & Multi Stage Heat/Cool, One Transformer

    System Test Menu

Used to test the system post-installation from the Installer Menu — turns configured equipment outputs on/off for testing (minimum on/off times not enforced in this mode).

    1. Press Select to enter the Main Menu.
    2. Navigate to Settings, press Select.
    3. Press and hold Up/Down arrows for 3 seconds to unlock the Installer option.
    4. Navigate to Installer Settings, press Select.
    5. Navigate to System Test, press Select.

Test steps cover: Heating equipment, Cooling equipment, Fan equipment, Humidification equipment, Dehumidification equipment, and Ventilation equipment.

    Troubleshooting

    Symptom Suggested Action
Display is blank Check circuit breaker; ensure power switch at heating/cooling system is on; ensure furnace door is closed securely.
Heating system doesn't respond ("Heating" on screen) Check for 24VAC at equipment secondary side of transformer (power to common); check 24VAC between W terminal and common; check for loose/broken wires to heating equipment.
Cooling system doesn't respond ("Cooling" on screen) Check for 24VAC at equipment secondary side of transformer; check 24VAC between Y terminal and common; check for loose/broken wires to cooling equipment.
Temperature settings won't change Ensure settings are within acceptable range: Heat 40-90°F (4-32°C), Cool 50-99°F (10-37°C).
Fan doesn't turn on during heat call Check Fan Control in Heating system setting matches your system type.
"Heating"/"Cooling" not displayed Check Control Setup system setting is correct; change System Mode and set temperature appropriately above/below current room temp.
Heat pump issues cool air in heat mode (or vice versa) Check O/B Operation system setting matches the heat pump's reversing valve operation.
Heat and cool both on simultaneously Check Equipment Type system setting matches installed equipment; check heating/cooling wires aren't shorted together.
Heating equipment runs in cool mode Check Equipment Type system setting matches installed equipment.
Humidifier doesn't operate in Auto mode Check Outdoor Sensor installer setting is set to Yes; verify the outdoor sensor is functioning (check outdoor temp displays correctly).
