    Quick reference guide for the Chamberlain B970 Belt Drive Garage Door Opener (Smart Garage Opener, Max Lift Power System™) — safety essentials, maintenance schedule, and troubleshooting diagnostics. Full illustrated installation steps are in the downloadable PDF.

    For Residential Use Only. Compatible with MyQ® and Security+ 2.0® accessories. Pre-programmed remote control included.

    Critical Safety Warnings

    • The door WILL NOT CLOSE unless the Protector System® (safety reversing sensors) is connected and properly aligned.
    • ALWAYS call a trained door systems technician if the garage door binds, sticks, or is out of balance — an unbalanced door may NOT reverse when required.
    • NEVER try to loosen, move, or adjust the garage door, door springs, cables, pulleys, brackets, or hardware — all under EXTREME tension.
    • Disable ALL locks and remove ALL ropes connected to the garage door BEFORE installation and operation, to avoid entanglement.
    • DO NOT install on a one-piece door if using devices/features providing unattended close (Timer-to-Close, MyQ® Smartphone Control, MyQ® Garage Door and Gate Monitor). These are for sectional doors ONLY.
    • The gap between the floor and the bottom of the door must not exceed 1/4" (6 mm), or the safety reversal system may not work properly.
    • ONLY operate at 120V, 60 Hz to avoid malfunction and damage.

    Before You Begin

    1. Disable locks and remove any ropes connected to the garage door.
    2. Lift the door halfway up and release — if balanced, it should stay in place, supported by its springs.
    3. Raise and lower the door to check for binding or sticking; if present, call a trained door systems technician.
    4. Check the floor seal gap (max 1/4" / 6mm).
    5. Install the opener above the center of the door (or within 4 ft / 1.2m left/right of center if a torsion spring or bearing plate is in the way).

Plus: header bracket, pulley, door bracket, curved & straight door arms, trolley, emergency release rope/handle, rail sections, hanging brackets, motor unit, sprocket cover, "U" bracket, belt, Protector System® safety reversing sensors, battery backup battery.

    Maintenance Schedule

    Every month:

    • Manually operate the door — if unbalanced or binding, call a trained door systems technician.
    • Check that the door opens and closes fully; adjust if necessary.
    • Test the safety reversal system; adjust if necessary.

    Every year:

    • Oil door rollers, bearings, and hinges. (The opener itself does not require additional lubrication — do not grease the door tracks.)
    • Test the battery backup and consider replacing the battery.

    Remote control battery: Replace ONLY with 3V CR2032 coin batteries — should last up to 3 years. Low battery is indicated when the remote's LED doesn't flash on button press. Insert positive side up.

    Troubleshooting — Diagnostic Codes

    The garage door opener has self-diagnostic capability — the UP and DOWN arrows flash diagnostic codes.

    Code Symptom Solution
    1-1 Opener won't close, lights flash Safety reversing sensors not installed/connected, or wires cut. Inspect sensor wires.
    1-2 Opener won't close, lights flash Short or reversed wire for safety sensors. Inspect at staple/connection points, replace or correct.
    1-3 Door control won't function Door control wires shorted or control faulty. Inspect and replace/correct wire.
    1-4 Opener won't close, lights flash Sensors misaligned or momentarily obstructed. Realign until both LEDs are steady and not flickering.
    1-5 Door moves 6-8" then stops/reverses Check for binding/obstruction. Check travel module/logic board wiring; replace travel module if needed.
    1-6 Door coasts after stopping Program travel to coasting position, or have door balanced by a trained technician.
    2 / 1-5 No movement or sound Replace logic board.
    3-2 Unable to set/retain travel Check travel module assembly, replace if necessary.
    3-3 Battery status LED flashing green constantly Battery backup charging circuit error — replace logic board.
    4-1 to 4-4 Door moves, stops/reverses Check for binding. If not binding, attempt to reprogram travel.
    4-5 Opener runs 6-8", stops, reverses Communication error to travel module. Check connections, replace travel module if needed.
    4-6 Opener won't close, lights flash Sensors misaligned/obstructed. Realign both to steady (non-flickering) LEDs.

    Additional Troubleshooting

    • Remote won't activate the door: Verify lock feature isn't active; reprogram the remote; check diagnostic codes.
    • Door won't close, lights blink: Safety reversing sensors must be connected and aligned before the opener moves down. Check for obstructions/alignment.
    • Lights won't turn off when door is open: Motion sensor/safety sensor feature — can be disabled via the door control (see full PDF page 35).
    • Won't enter Wi-Fi LEARN mode: The opener must complete a full open/close cycle after installation or a power outage before Wi-Fi LEARN mode activates.
    • Vehicle's HomeLink® won't program: A Compatibility Bridge™ (not included) may be needed for certain vehicles — check bridge.chamberlain.com.
    • Neighbor's remote opens your door: Erase the opener's memory and reprogram your remote control(s).

    Battery Status LED Reference (Battery Backup Models)

    • Green (solid): Battery fully charged — all systems normal.
    • Green (flashing): Battery is charging.
    • Orange (solid, beeps ~every 2 sec): Operating on battery power (lost main power).
    • Orange (flashing, beeps ~every 30 sec): Battery is low.
    • Red (solid, beeps ~every 30 sec): 12V battery no longer holds a charge — needs replacement.
