Installation instructions for the American Pacific Gas Water Heater Controller (GWHC) — a smart home accessory that lets you control your gas water heater's pilot setting remotely using any home automation appliance module.

Installation Overview — 3 Easy Steps

    1. Locate the gas control valve. Find the "gas control valve" in the lower center of your gas water heater. Turn the "gas control knob" to the "VACATION" or "PILOT LIGHTING" setting until it stops, then remove the control knob by pulling on it. (Knobs vary in look/color by valve.)
    2. Align the shaft's notch. Align the shaft's notch on the gas control valve to match the vertical notch on the Gas Water Heater Controller. A 1/8" turn left or right should provide a perfect fit. Do not attempt to turn the notch on the controller itself — this may void the warranty.
    3. Seat the controller and install the mounting bracket. Seat the controller firmly onto the face of the gas control valve and install the universal mounting bracket (which has two sides and 3 holes — flip it over or choose a different hole if it doesn't fit). Tighten the thumbscrew on the right side, then repeat for the left side. Some water heaters have an igniter on the right side of the valve — you may need to unclip it and place it on top of the valve (it will still function). Finally, install your home automation device, plug the short cord into it, and plug the long AC cord into any 110V AC outlet.

Note: Any home automation control of your choice will work with the GWHC — just be sure to use an APPLIANCE MODULE. Temperature settings may vary depending on the age of the water heater and may need later adjustment.

    Safety Warnings

    • Do NOT remove your control valve from your water heater (it was only removed in the manual's figures to illustrate simplicity of install).
    • Failure to comply with installation instructions will void any warranties, implied or written.
    • Follow instructions exactly — do not bypass any steps during installation.
    • If the unit fails, it must be repaired by a qualified electrician or GWHC representative.
    • Do not remove the timer cover, or alter/change factory settings without the printed instructions.
    • Do not put fingers or objects in or under the front of the unit while operating — risk of damage.
    • Failure to comply may cause bodily injury and/or serious shock from internal parts, and will void the warranty.
    • During prolonged power outages, the unit will not function properly — it can be removed for manual operation and reinstalled after power is restored.

    Energy-Saving Tips from American Pacific

After installing your Smart Device, consider these additional ways to reduce gas and water consumption:

    • Insulate all hot water supply lines from your water heater to each faucet
    • Install a water heater blanket over your water heater
    • If hot water takes more than 10 seconds to reach the furthest fixture, consider installing a circulator
    • Install low-flow faucets and shower heads
    • Shorten shower times
    • Do laundry in cold water when possible
    • Repair any leaky faucets
