    Overview

    The Aeotec Recessed Door Sensor 7 (model ZW187) is a Z-Wave Plus v2 device designed to be embedded inside a wooden door or window frame — a discreet, no-visible-hardware alternative to a surface-mount contact sensor. It sends a notification (via Association Group 1 / Lifeline) whenever the magnet moves away from or near the sensor, and can directly control other Z-Wave devices via Group 2. It supports SmartStart for simplified inclusion and Security 2 (S2) for secure, authenticated communication.

    Key Interfaces & Accessories

    • Action Button — located inside the Z-Wave Button Hole; used for networking and resetting.
    • LED — indicates the current state of the product (red).
    • Magnet — changes the sensor state when moved away from or near the main sensor body.

    Important Safety Information

    • Intended for indoor use in dry locations only — do not use in damp, moist, or wet locations.

    Optimal Placement

    • The sensor's two parts must separate when the door is opened. Typically the larger part is installed in the door itself, and the smaller magnet part in the surrounding frame (this can be reversed if the drill hole instructions are adapted accordingly).
    • As a magnetic sensor using wireless communication, it may not work optimally when mounted on a metal frame or close to metal objects such as door locks — test before permanently mounting with adhesive tape or screws.
    • Requires a minimum spacing of about 1mm (0.04") between the door and frame when closed; the gap should be no larger than 12mm (0.47").
    • When the door is closed, the sensor's two parts should align.

    Installation Steps

    Tools needed: screwdriver, 19mm wide drill bit, drill driver, PVA glue, rubber hammer.

    1. Drill a hole 65mm (2.56") deep in the door at the selected location with a 19mm (0.75") wide drill bit.
    2. Drill a hole 15mm (0.59") deep in the doorframe at the corresponding location with the same drill bit.
    3. Insert the sensor into the drilled hole in the door (expand the hole if force is required) and secure it with two of the provided screws.
    4. Place a small amount of white PVA glue inside the doorframe hole, then insert the magnet — tap into place with a rubber hammer if needed.

    Adding to a Z-Wave Network

    1. Press the sensor latch with a slotted screwdriver to remove the lid.
    2. Squeeze the sides of the sensor casing to relieve pressure on the chipboard, then slide the chipboard out.
    3. Remove the pull tab to engage the pre-installed battery. The LED will slow fade-in/fade-out red for a few seconds, indicating power is on.
    4. Add the sensor to your Z-Wave network using one of these methods:
      • SmartStart: scan the device's QR code with your gateway's app — the sensor will join automatically within 10 minutes.
      • DSK entry: if your gateway supports Device Specific Key security, enter the first 5 digits of the device's DSK (found on packaging) when prompted.
      • Manual inclusion: put your Z-Wave gateway into "add device" mode, then press the Action Button once — the red LED will flash.
    5. On success, the LED turns solid red for 10 seconds. If it instead slow fades before turning off, inclusion failed — repeat the steps.
    6. Squeeze the casing again, re-insert the chipboard, and re-attach the lid.

    Removing from a Z-Wave Network

    1. Set your Z-Wave controller into "Remove Device" mode.
    2. Ensure the sensor is powered, then click the Action Button once — the LED flashes red for 5 seconds.
    3. If removal fails, the LED simply extinguishes. If removal succeeds, it slow fades red for 10 seconds, then extinguishes.

    Factory Reset

    Use only if the primary controller is missing or inoperable. With the sensor powered, press and hold the Action Button for at least 22 seconds and release when the LED begins to slow fade-in/fade-out red. Factory reset will remove the device from the network, delete association settings, and restore default configuration.
