Quick start guide for the Aeotec Range Extender 7 (model ZW189) — a Z-Wave signal repeater that extends network range and improves connectivity for Z-Wave smart home devices.

    Important Safety Information

    • Read this guide and the full documentation at support.aeotec.com/re7 carefully. Failure to follow Aeotec's recommendations may be dangerous or cause a violation of law. The manufacturer, importer, distributor, and/or reseller are not responsible for loss or damage from not following instructions in this guide or other materials.
    • Range Extender 7 is intended for indoor use in dry locations only. Do not use in damp, moist, and/or wet locations.
    • Contains small parts; keep away from children.

Quick Start — Installing and Connecting Range Extender 7

    1. Determine the installation location. Generally, this will be between your Z-Wave gateway and a Z-Wave device experiencing poor connectivity.
    2. Plug Range Extender 7 into the selected power outlet. Moving Range Extender 7 after connecting it to your Z-Wave network may prevent it from performing optimally.
    3. Connect Range Extender 7 to your automation network:
      • If your Z-Wave gateway supports SmartStart: Scan Range Extender 7's QR Code using your gateway's app. Once scanned, Range Extender 7 will join your Z-Wave network automatically within 10 minutes.
      • Otherwise: Set your gateway into its "add device" mode (refer to the gateway's manual if unsure), then press Range Extender 7's Action Button once — its LED will blink.
      • If your gateway supports S2 security and you want your device to use this higher level of security, enter the first 5 digits of the DSK code into the gateway's interface when prompted. Do not lose the DSK or remove it from the product or package — it's also used for SmartStart inclusion and can be found printed on the packaging.
    4. Successful join: When Range Extender 7 successfully joins your Z-Wave network, its LED will turn solid white for 2 seconds. If it fails, its LED turns a slow fade-in/fade-out white color — repeat the above steps, or contact support for further help if needed.

    Automatic Network Behavior

Once Range Extender 7 is a part of your Z-Wave system, it will automatically perform its signal-repeating and application functions whenever requested by the network or gateway. No further configuration or automation changes are required. Some gateways may require you to manually rebuild the network topography for this to take effect.

    Gateway Compatibility
