    Installation and operation instructions for the ABB TH-1.1 Thermostat, part of the ABB-free@home™ home automation system — controls temperature and humidity in a house or apartment via wireless mesh connection to a free@home System Access Point (SysAP).

    Important Safety Information

    WARNING: Installation must be performed by a licensed HVAC installer or electrical professional. Improper installation can cause property damage, personal injury, or loss of life. Leave this document with the homeowner for future reference.

    Intended Use

    The Thermostat is used as part of the ABB-free@home system to control temperature and humidity in a house or apartment. For details on the many functions of this device, see the system manual at www.abb.com/freeathome.

    Installation

    1. Turn OFF power to the heating/cooling system at the breaker or control switch. Confirm the old system is off by changing the temperature — if it doesn't turn on within 5 minutes, power is off.
    2. Remove the old thermostat cover. Do NOT remove any wires from the thermostat yet.
    3. Take a picture of the old thermostat's wiring for reference.
    4. Label the wires with the provided wire labels. The ABB Thermostat requires a "C" wire — if there is none, the wiring must be changed.

      IMPORTANT: The ABB Thermostat does NOT work with 120V or higher. If the existing thermostat is labeled 120V or 240V, has thick black wires with wire nuts, or has L1/L2 terminal blocks — do NOT connect the device!

    5. Using a screwdriver, disconnect the wires and remove the old wall plate. Wrap the wires around a pen or tape them to the wall to prevent them falling back into the wall.
    6. Check for paint gaps or screw holes from the old thermostat — use the optional Trim Plate to hide flaws. Snap the Mounting Base to the optional Trim Plate, but do NOT yet attach the Mounting Base to the wall.
    7. Insert wires through the wiring hole on the Mounting Base. Use a wire strip gauge and trim 0.25" of insulation from the end of each wire for easy insertion into the wire terminals.
    8. If wires were connected to both Rc and Rh on the old thermostat (2-transformer system), remove the jumper on the back of the ABB Thermostat.
    9. Firmly connect the wires per the info gathered in Steps 3–4. Gently tug each wire to confirm it's secure.
    10. Use the two provided screws to attach the Mounting Base to the wall (use wall anchors if required). Confirm the base is level using the built-in level bubble. Snap the ABB Thermostat onto the base. Use the anti-theft screw to prevent removal in public settings.
    11. Turn the power back ON at the breaker or control switch.

    Setup (Adding to the free@home Network)

    Detailed setup information is available in the technical reference manual and online help for the System Access Point (www.abb.com/freeathome).

    1. To complete setup you need the ABB-free@home System Access Point (SysAP) and a computer (tablet, laptop, or desktop).
    2. Remove the sticker from the device and place it on the Thermostat Device Installation Plan included with the SysAP.
    3. Walls, ceilings, and electrical equipment can affect wireless communication, especially steel reinforcements or large metal objects. Keep electrical devices sending high-frequency signals (computers, wireless routers, audio/video systems) at least 3 feet from the device.
    4. On first power-up, the device enters discovery mode for 30 minutes. During this window, log in to the SysAP and add the device to the free@home network.
    5. After 30 minutes, the device automatically exits discovery mode. To re-enter, cycle power OFF then ON — this restarts the 30-minute discovery window.
    6. Once added to a network, the device no longer enters discovery mode at power-up. To add it to a new network, first force it to forget its existing network via a factory reset.

    Reset Steps

    1. Touch and hold the power OFF button for at least 15 seconds, until the thermostat begins to reboot.
    2. After rebooting, return to Steps 3–4 of Setup to connect the device to a new network.
