Complete installation and user guide for the 2GIG-STZ-1 Z-Wave Plus battery-powered thermostat.
Complete installation and user guide for the 2GIG-STZ-1 Z-Wave Plus battery-powered thermostat, covering wiring, HVAC system setup, Z-Wave inclusion, and troubleshooting.
The 2GIG-STZ-1 is a programmable, Z-Wave communicating thermostat. It can be powered using 24VAC (if both "R" and "C" wires are available) or four (4) AA batteries. It works with most compatible Z-Wave hubs/controllers to operate the thermostat, configure settings, and display current conditions. Do not use on 120VAC systems. Compatible with 24VAC gas, oil, or electric heating/cooling systems, or gas millivolt heating systems.
Powered by either 24VAC from the HVAC system or four (4) AA batteries. Powering with 24VAC requires both the "C" common wire (typically blue) and the "R" return wire (typically red). Battery power does not require a "C" wire connection — do not install batteries if the thermostat is already powered by 24VAC (they are not needed for backup). On batteries, expect roughly 2 years of life depending on usage and backlight frequency. Always use Alkaline batteries and replace as a complete set of 4.
Important: When battery-powered on a Z-Wave network, the thermostat will NOT function as a Z-Wave repeater.
Warning: If the old thermostat contains mercury, dispose of it per federal/state/local regulations — many areas have hazardous waste or exchange programs (see epa.gov).
| Terminal | Typical Wire Color | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Y / Y1 | Yellow | Cool / Compressor Stage 1 |
| Y2 | Black/Brown | Compressor Stage 2 (2-stage only) |
| W / W1 | White | Heat Stage 1 |
| W2 | Orange | Heat Stage 2 (2-stage only) |
| G | Green | Fan |
| RC / RH | Red | 24VAC Power (cooling/heating side) |
| C | Blue | 24VAC Common — required for 24VAC operation; not required on batteries |
| O/B | Orange | Changeover valve (Heat Pump only) |
Single-transformer systems: one "R" wire connects to either RC or RH (a jumper links the two terminals). Dual-transformer systems: connect the cooling system's "C" wire to the thermostat "C" terminal (never the heating system's C wire) and remove the RC–RH jumper.
Default preset: Standard gas/electric HVAC, Gas heat fan type, 1 stage heating, 1 stage cooling. No changes needed if installed on this type of system. For any other configuration (e.g. Heat Pump), update the SYSTEM menu.
To enter Menu Mode, touch and hold MODE. Use the arrow buttons to scroll, FAN (Select) to choose/confirm, and MODE (Done) to exit. For multi-stage system settings, use the Advanced System Settings Menu (touch and hold MODE, then hold MODE + Down arrow for 5 seconds from the Setup menu) — intended for qualified HVAC installers.
Supports S0, S2 Unauthorized, and S2 Authenticated inclusion modes. The S2 QR code/pin code is printed on a label above the LCD screen under the faceplate.
SmartStart: pre-include the thermostat by scanning its Z-Wave QR code with a SmartStart controller in Security S2 Authenticated Add Mode, key in the DSK, power on the device, and wait — no further action needed; it joins automatically within 10 minutes. Allow at least 15 minutes after power-cycling before relying on SmartStart inclusion.
To remove from a network: set the controller to exclude/remove mode, wake the thermostat, hold MODE for 5 seconds, scroll to Z-Wave and select, then confirm YES when prompted.
