  • 2GIG EDGE Security & Smart Home System — Smart Home Manual

    September 08, 2026 6 min read

Smart Home Manual for the 2GIG EDGE Security & Smart Home System, covering Z-Wave smart home controls, cameras, and Alarm.com setup.

    Full text manual (for reference)

Smart Home Manual for the 2GIG EDGE Security & Smart Home System — covers all Z-Wave smart home control features and functions of the 2GIG EDGE touchscreen panel in detail, for both home owners and installers. This is one of two related 2GIG EDGE documents; see also the 2GIG EDGE User Guide for full system operation.

2GIG EDGE Panel Smart Home Capabilities

Z-Wave™ and Z-Wave Plus™ and S2 Compatibility: Installers and Master users (if configured) can add up to 232 smart home devices to communicate with the 2GIG EDGE Panel using the Z-Wave and Z-Wave Plus wireless protocol. The panel can be included and operated in any Z-Wave network with certified devices from other manufacturers — all non-battery-operated nodes act as repeaters to increase network reliability regardless of vendor. This is a security-enabled Z-Wave Plus product that uses encrypted Z-Wave Plus messages to communicate with other security-enabled Z-Wave Plus products.

    • Alarm.com Cameras: with a WiFi-connected panel, view video streams of installed Alarm.com cameras.
    • Alarm.com/Skybell Doorbell Cameras: Live View and answer the doorbell directly on the panel, with two-way communication.
    • Local Network Cameras Support: stream video from local network ONVIF (Profile-S) cameras over WiFi.

    Smart Home Controls

The system supports a maximum of 232 Z-Wave devices, controlled from the Smart Home Controls menu:

    • Lights: tap Lights, then swipe left/right (or tap the dim/brighten icon) to dim or brighten; tap the switch to turn a light On or Off.
    • Locks: tap a switch on the Locks screen to lock or unlock a device.
    • Thermostats: raise/lower temperature set points with the arrows, tap to change fan setting or thermostat mode.
    • Garage Doors: press the toggle on the Garage Door screen to open or close.
    • Cameras: cameras must be added and accessible on Alarm.com first; tap a video thumbnail for live feed.
    • Doorbell (Camera): tap and hold HOLD TO TALK to speak to the visitor; tap volume icons to adjust or mute; tap the lock icon to lock/unlock a Z-Wave door lock; tap the emergency icon for Panic, Fire, and Emergency buttons.

NOTE: If Smart Home Controls is not configured on your system, a notification will appear when the button is tapped — consult your security provider to enable the feature.

    Smart Areas

The Smart Areas screen provides access to controls and status of all Smart Areas from the main panel or EDGE Remote Keypads. Press the Smart Areas button, enter a user code (which controls which Smart Areas the user can see), and view status per area.

    • Status Examples: 1 – Ready to Arm, 2 – Ready to Arm (Bypass), 3 – In Alarm, 4 – Armed Away, 5 – Not Ready to Arm, 6 – Disabled.
    • Arming: tap the Arm Stay or Arm Away button(s) on the Smart Area.
    • Alarms: press Disarm on the alarming Smart Area, then tap Acknowledge to stop alert sounds/flashing, or Clear to remove all alarms (the underlying issue must still be resolved).

    Alarm.com Setup

The Alarm.com mobile app provides functional access to the 2GIG EDGE system via Apple iOS or Android. To get started: access the Alarm.com portal, enter the username/password provided by your dealer, agree to terms, create a password, choose a security question, and verify your email address.

Account options (left side of the Alarm.com portal): Home, Video, Automation, Notifications, Activity, Users, Settings.

    • Users: click Add New User, enter first/last name, and click Create.
    • Device Access: enter a 4-digit access code for the user, enable/disable device access, and Save.
    • User Profile: edit the profile name, add a contact (phone/email), and set a language preference.
    • Access Period: set All Times, a Restricted Schedule, or Temporary Access.
    • Automation: click Add New Rule to set a Trigger, Action, and Time frame; also configure Schedules, Scenes, Arming Schedules, and Auto Re-Arming.
    • Video: enable "Stream Video to Security Panel Screen" from the Alarm.com portal (cameras/doorbells must be added to the Alarm.com account first).
    • Settings: Login Settings, Account Management (system/property info), Devices, Geo-Services (geo-fences), Notifications (Standard, Property Awareness, Family, Second Home, Reminders categories, delivered via email), and Activity (panel history — website logins, alarms, open doors, etc.).

Z-Wave devices installed on the system display within the Alarm.com Mobile App and can be operated there (e.g. adjusting a Z-Wave thermostat, or opening/closing a Z-Wave garage door) though settings/functionality differ by device.

Smart Home Setup (on the Panel)

Access via the Home Screen Settings icon → Smart Home Settings (only available if enabled by your installer). Options: View All Devices, Add Device, Remove Device, Check Network, Rediscover Network, Doorbells, Cameras.

    • Rename a Device: tap > next to the device, tap > next to Device Name, enter the new name via keyboard, tap UPDATE.
    • Identify a Device: tap IDENTIFY — the device will turn On and Off to confirm the node.
    • Add Device: tap Add Device, follow on-screen instructions, tap ADD DEVICE (panel listens for the device), follow the device's own Learn-mode instructions. For S2 devices, enter the device's DSK code when prompted. Tap DONE when finished. It's recommended to remove Z-Wave devices from any prior pairing before adding them.
    • Remove Device: tap Remove Device, follow on-screen prep instructions, tap REMOVE DEVICE (panel listens), follow the device's Remove-process instructions, tap DONE.
    • Security Inclusion Failure: tap Remove Device, confirm removal, tap OK.
    • Missing Information: a device missing info after inclusion displays in yellow — tap the notification, OK, then DONE, and use Check Network.
    • Show/Hide a Device: on the Edit Smart Home Device screen, toggle the Show switch to hide a device from the View Devices list.
    • Check Network: tap Check Network, then TEST, to check for failed nodes.
    • Remove a Failed Device: tap REMOVE, then OK once confirmed.
    • Rediscover Network: tap Rediscover Network, then START — the panel discovers available nodes (Z-Wave functions may be briefly unavailable during rediscovery).

    Remote Keypad Options

    • Sound: Settings → Sounds → slide the volume control.
    • Screen Settings: adjust Screen Brightness (slider), Screen Timeout (30 sec – 10 min, default 2 min), Screen Saver (Off / My Photos / Demo Mode), Screensaver Active time window, and Clean Screen mode (press START, screen and all functions — including Emergency Buttons — are disabled for 30 seconds while wiping).
    • Screensaver: My Photos — configured the same way as the Main Panel; requires a FAT/FAT32-formatted USB flash drive. Adjustable: Photo Duration (30 sec, 1, 2, or 5 min), Transition Effect (None/Fade/Push/Wipe), Transition Duration (2, 3, or 5 sec), Display Sequence (by name or shuffle), and Full Landscape Mode.

    Installers Setup — Z-Wave Settings

Access via Settings → Installer Access Code → Installer Toolbox → Z-Wave Settings. Available options: View All Devices, Add Device, Remove Device, Check Network, Rediscover Network, Reset Controller.

    • Reset Controller (Installers only): resets the panel's Z-Wave Controller to default settings. This cannot be reversed. If this is the Primary controller for the network, resetting orphans all nodes in the network — every node must be excluded and re-included afterward. If used as a Secondary controller, only reset it if the Primary controller is missing or inoperable.

Z-Wave Setup from Alarm.com Mobile Tech

    1. Tap Add Devices, scroll down and tap Z-Wave.
    2. Tap Start Z-Wave Add Mode — the panel enters Learn Mode; follow the on-screen instructions to activate Learn mode on the device.
    3. If an S2 device is found, enter the first 5 digits of the security key, or scan the QR code on the device.
    4. The device is added to the panel and displayed — repeat to add more devices, or scroll down and Save.

    Local Network Cameras

Only ONVIF cameras are supported (ONVIF Profile-S required). Cameras must be added to the same WiFi network as the panel, or to the panel's access point (max 8 devices on the access point) — the panel auto-discovers them during the add-camera process.

    Add a Camera

    1. Access the Installer Toolbox → Camera Settings → IP Cameras.
    2. Tap ADD CAMERA, enter a login name, tap SAVE.
    3. Tap Password, enter a password, tap SAVE — the panel searches for available cameras.
    4. Once found, tap the camera to access its settings; tap Device Name to rename it, then DONE.

NOTE: the panel adds all network cameras sharing the same login/password; if cameras use different credentials, repeat the process separately for each set.

    Setup On-Board Camera

Access via Installer Toolbox → Camera Settings → On-Board Camera. Toggle the Event switch to enable/disable event-triggered photo capture. Streaming video to Remote Keypad(s) can be toggled from the same screen.
