  • NuTone Intercom Replacement Guide

NuTone Intercom Discontinued? IST Is the Official Replacement.

Your NuTone intercom stopped working and parts are nowhere to be found. Good news: you don't need to rewire your home. Intrasonic (IST) intercom systems are the industry-accepted drop-in replacement — built to work with the exact same low-voltage wiring NuTone installed decades ago.

Why NuTone Systems Are Failing — and Why There's No Fix Coming

NuTone built one of the most widely installed wired intercom systems in American homes from the 1960s through the early 2000s. Millions of these systems are still in walls today — and many are 20, 30, even 40 years old. NuTone stopped actively developing and manufacturing residential intercom hardware years ago. When a master station or door panel finally fails, there's often nothing left to buy to fix it.

You don't have to tear out a system that mostly still works, or abandon whole-home intercom entirely. The wiring already in your walls is the hard part — and it's still good.

Why IST Is the Accepted NuTone Replacement

Intrasonic (IST) intercom systems use the same low-voltage wiring standard NuTone systems were built on — standard 2-conductor and 4-conductor intercom wire, run to standard-sized wall boxes. This is why IST is the go-to replacement recommendation across the smart home and low-voltage installer community: it drops into infrastructure that's already in your walls.

    • The wiring NuTone installed decades ago is almost always still good — copper doesn't wear out
    • IST stations mount into the same style wall openings NuTone used
    • No new wire runs, no wall patching, no rewiring project
    • A full-home swap typically takes a single day for a qualified installer, or a manageable weekend project for an experienced DIYer

    Find Your Replacement

Not sure what you had, or what you need? Match your old system below, or call us and we'll do it for you.

If your old NuTone system was... The IST replacement is...
A basic room-to-room intercom (master + several room stations) IST RETRO series (RETRO-M master, RETRO-D remotes)
An intercom with a door station / door release RETRO-M + RETRO-DAP door panel
An intercom with built-in radio/music distribution RETRO or I2000 series (both support whole-home music)
A more modern flat-panel NuTone system IST I2000 series (ISI2000DA master, ISI2000DW remotes)

Not sure which category fits? Send a photo of your existing master station and door panel to our team — call 858-693-8887 — and we'll identify the exact IST equivalent and confirm wiring compatibility before you order anything.

    What a Retrofit Actually Involves

    1. Remove the old NuTone master station from its wall box — the low-voltage wiring behind it stays in place.
    2. Confirm wire count and gauge — most NuTone installs use standard 2- or 4-conductor 18-22 gauge wire, directly compatible with IST stations. Our team can walk you through checking this over the phone.
    3. Mount the new IST stations into the existing wall openings.
    4. Connect the existing wiring to the new IST terminals.
    5. Power up and test — IST master stations run on standard 120V power; remote stations are powered through the intercom wiring itself, exactly like your old NuTone system.

For most homes, this is a project that takes a few hours to a full day. It does not require an electrician for the low-voltage work.

    Common Questions

Can I really use my existing NuTone wiring with an IST system?
In the vast majority of homes, yes. NuTone and IST both use standard low-voltage intercom wire run to standard wall box openings. Our technical support team can confirm compatibility for your specific installation before you order — call 858-693-8887.

My NuTone system had a door release/buzzer. Does IST support that?
Yes. The IST RETRO-DAP door panel includes a door release trigger output, just like NuTone door stations did, and is compatible with standard electric door strikes and buzzers.

Can I keep my old NuTone remote stations and just replace the master?
This depends on the wiring protocol of your original system, since NuTone had multiple generations of intercom electronics. In most cases a full station swap is recommended to guarantee compatibility and audio quality, but our team can review your specific setup and advise.

Does IST support whole-home music distribution like my old NuTone system did?
Yes — both the RETRO and I2000 series support connecting an external audio source to the master station, distributing music to every room station at independently controlled volumes.

    Is this a DIY-friendly project?
For most homes, yes. If you're comfortable with basic wiring — the kind used for doorbells and low-voltage lighting — swapping a NuTone system for IST is a manageable weekend project. We provide wiring diagrams and phone support. For larger or more complex original installations, hiring a low-voltage installer is a safe, affordable option.
