  • Yale YH Collection Mechanical Interconnected Lockset — Installation Instructions

    September 08, 2026 4 min read

Full installation instructions for the Yale YH Collection mechanical interconnected lockset (YRC series), covering handing, deadbolt variants, and UL-listing requirements.

    Full text manual (for reference)

    Overview

The Yale YH Collection™ Mechanical Interconnected Lockset combines a deadbolt and latchbolt in one adjustable-backset unit (4" or 5.5" center-to-center). Actual deadbolt and latchbolt hardware varies by product ordered.

Retrofitting or modifying this product may impact fire rating, safety features, and warranty. Consult applicable code specifications to ensure compliance with all codes and ratings before making changes.

    Before You Begin

    • Recommended door edge distance: 4-1/2" minimum
    • Door thickness range: 1-3/8" (35mm) minimum to 1-3/4" (44.5mm) maximum
    • Mounting height range: 48" (1219mm) max down to standard height, with overall reach up to 96" (2438mm) max depending on configuration

    Installation Overview

    1. Mark door reference lines using the supplied template, centered on the existing backset (2-3/8" or 2-3/4").
    2. Prepare the door — using the template, drill the 4" or 5.5" hole pattern plus the 2-1/8" and 1" diameter bores. Drill holes halfway through the door, then complete from the opposite side to prevent splitting.
    3. Install strike plates on the door frame using the supplied 7-16 / 8-32 x 1" screws (x4). Mortise 1" diameter x 1" deep and 1" diameter x 1/2" deep recesses as required.
    4. Determine door handing before assembly. Handing is determined from the secure side of the door (the side from which you initially unlock and enter):
      • Left Hand (LH) — hinges left, opens inward
      • Left Hand Reverse (LHR) — hinges left, opens outward
      • Right Hand (RH) — hinges right, opens inward
      • Right Hand Reverse (RHR) — hinges right, opens outward
    5. Change handing if necessary using the 4-24 x 1/4" PPHMS and 6-32 x 1/4" POHMS screws (the 6-32 screw does not come out of the plate). Lockset handing configurations are available in both 4" and 5.5" backset, Left Hand and Right Hand.
    6. Adjust thumbturn location if necessary (based on the 4" or 5.5" hole spacing bored in the door per the template) using the 6-32 x 1/4" POHMS screw. Turn the thumbturn to ensure the plate tab fits into the hole on the escutcheon.
    7. Install fire cups. Both fire cups and a UL-marked latchbolt must be used to qualify for UL listing.
    8. Adjust the deadbolt latch (if an adjustable deadbolt latch is provided) between the default 2-3/8" (60mm) and optional 2-3/4" (70mm) throw, rotating 180° as needed.
    9. Install the deadbolt latch and latchbolt using 7-16 / 8-32 x 1" UNCWS screws (x4). The bolt must be in the correct position before installing — add the sleeve to the latch to accommodate a 1" (25mm) diameter prep. Refer to the applicable deadbolt section below before installing.
    10. Install the exterior deadbolt — the procedure depends on the function and keyway:
      • Standard Exterior Deadbolt (YR852 & YR872 functions, KW/Schlage® C/Yale Para keyways): use M6x55 PPHMS screws (x2). Retract the bolt to the unlocked position before installing.
      • Optional Exterior Deadbolt (YR852 & YR872 functions, Yale Commercial & Arrow keyways or SFIC): use 1/4-20 x 2-3/8" PPHMS screws (x2). Extend the bolt to the locked position before installing.
      • Occupancy Exterior Deadbolt (YR853 function): use 1/4-20 x 1-3/4" LHSCS screws (x2). Extend the bolt to the locked position before installing.
    11. Install the lock chassis using 10-32 x 1-1/2" PPHMS screws (x2), confirming the bolt is in the proper position per the deadbolt section used above.
    12. Secure the back plate to the door using two M4 x 14mm PFHMS self-tapping screws. Drill two 1/8" pilot holes first. Both self-tapping screws must be used to qualify for UL listing. Test deadbolt and latchbolt operation from the outside of the door at this stage.
    13. Install the interior escutcheon using 10-32 x 5/8" POHMS screws (x2) — orientations must match, turning the thumbturn to adjust slot orientation as needed.
    14. Install the interior lever.
    15. Test final latchbolt and deadbolt operation from both the inside and outside of the door to confirm smooth, correct function before considering the installation complete.

Removing the Cylinder (Kwikset, Schlage, Para) — Retrofit / Face-Removable Deadbolt Only

    When installed on the door:

    1. Insert the key into the lock.
    2. Press the cylinder-removing tool into the small hole on the cylinder face and turn the key counter-clockwise — this rotates the cylinder face slightly off-center.
    3. Once turned off-center, pull on the key to remove the cylinder.
    4. Remove the plug assembly from the cylinder housing for re-keying.

When NOT installed on the door:

    1. Remove the loose plate from the back of the cylinder.
    2. Two screws hold the metal strap in place. Under the "C" cutout in this strap is a semicircular indentation in a spring-loaded tab. Using the cylinder-removing tool (wire with loop) or a screwdriver, place the tip against the tab in the indentation and push toward the center while turning clockwise.
    3. This moves the cylinder and strap to the left. Once fully left, push the cylinder out of the housing. (It may help to insert the tool in the gap created on the right to force the cylinder left.)
    4. Remove the plug assembly from the cylinder housing for re-keying.

    Safety & Compliance Notes

    • Retrofitting or modifying this lockset may impact its fire rating, safety features, and warranty — verify against applicable codes first.
    • UL listing requires both fire cups AND a UL-marked latchbolt to be installed.
    • UL listing also requires the back plate to be secured with the two specified M4 x 14mm self-tapping screws.
    • Confirm bolt position (retracted/extended) matches the requirements for your specific deadbolt function (YR852, YR853, YR872) before final assembly.
