Setup and operating instructions for the X10 WS14A Decorator Companion Switch — an add-on companion switch used with the WS12A Decorator Dimmer or WS13A Decorator Switch to enable 3-way and 4-way lighting control applications.

    Overview

The WS14A Decorator Companion Switch must be used together with either the WS12A Decorator Dimmer or the WS13A Decorator Switch. It is normally used for "3-way" applications — where two switches control the same light, such as at the top and bottom of a staircase. The WS14A can also support "4-way" applications, where three switches control the same light, by connecting the WS12A/WS13A plus one WS14A per the WS12A/WS13A instructions, then adding a second WS14A as described below.

    3-Way Wiring (Diagram A)

WS12A Dimmer → traveller wires → WS14A Companion Switch. The traveller wires connect the WS12A Dimmer to the WS14A Companion Switch.

    3-Way Wiring (Diagram B)

WS13A Switch → traveller wires → WS14A Companion Switch. The traveller wires connect the WS13A Switch to the WS14A Companion Switch.

    4-Way Wiring

For 4-way dimmer or switch applications (three switches controlling one light), an additional WS14A Companion Switch is added downstream of the first WS14A, connected via its own traveller wires. See the instructions included with the WS12A (for dimmer applications) or WS13A (for switch applications) for full wiring details of the additional companion switch.

Installing an Additional Companion Switch (4-Way Applications)

    1. Disconnect the power at the circuit breaker.
    2. Remove all wall plates and unscrew the existing switches from their boxes. Identify which switches are 3-way switches (3 screw terminals) and which switch is the 4-way switch (4 screw terminals). Identify the common wire at each existing 3-way switch (usually connected to a differently-colored terminal).
    3. Replace one of the existing 3-way wall switches with the WS12A Wall Dimmer or WS13A Wall Switch, per the instructions included with the WS12A/WS13A.
    4. Replace the other existing 3-way wall switch with a WS14A Companion Switch (sold separately), per the WS12A/WS13A instructions.
    5. Replace the existing 4-way switch with a second WS14A Companion Switch, by connecting both wires from the top of the old 4-way switch to the SWITCH terminal on the WS14A, and both wires from the bottom of the old 4-way switch to the LIVE terminal on the WS14A.
    6. Screw all three switches into their wall boxes and replace the wall plates.

    Warnings & Important Notes

    • Warning: Wall Dimmer Modules must not be used to control appliances or fluorescent lamps.
    • Important: The WS13A switch requires a Neutral connection — this is not the same as ground. If you're unsure whether a Neutral wire is present at the switch location, consult a qualified electrician.
