Owner's manual for the X10 UR74A 5-in-1 Universal Learning Remote — controls TV, VCR, cable box, and CD/DVD player via IR, plus X10 lamps and appliances anywhere in the home via RF.

Overview

The UR74A combines IR remote control for your audio/video equipment with X10 RF technology for controlling lamps and appliances anywhere in your home — signals pass through walls, so you're not limited to line-of-sight. Requires X10 Transceiver Module and Lamp/Appliance Modules (sold separately) to control household devices.

Safety Considerations

• Use common sense scheduling unattended devices — e.g., an empty coffee pot remotely turned on could overheat and be damaged.
• DO NOT USE the remote to control high-power heating appliances such as portable heaters — clothing draped over a remotely-activated heater could cause a fire.
• Do not disassemble any Home Automation plug-in Module or Controller — no user-serviceable parts inside.
• If liquid is spilled on a unit, disconnect it from the AC outlet immediately to prevent fire or shock hazard, then consult service personnel.
• Powerline-operated equipment should bear UL listing or CSA certification and not be modified in ways that defeat safety features.
• Do not expose any part of the system to rain or moisture — risk of electric shock.
• Complies with FCC Part 15 rules; may cause interference with radio/TV if not installed per instructions. Try reorienting/relocating the antenna, moving the interface, or using a different circuit if interference occurs.

Controllers and Modules

• Modules control lights/appliances and plug into a standard AC outlet (e.g., Lamp Module, Transceiver Module).
• Controllers plug into wall outlets and send commands to Modules over your existing house wiring — no impact on your electrical system.
• The Transceiver Module doubles as a controller: it receives RF commands from the remote and relays digital signals over house wiring to other Modules.
• Each Module has an address made up of a House Code (A–P, red dial) and Unit Code (1–16, black dial), set with a small screwdriver or coin. Only the Module with the matching address executes a command.

Installing the Components

Transceiver Module

1. Set the House Code to 'A.'
2. Plug a lamp or appliance into the Transceiver Module.
3. Plug the Transceiver Module into a convenient AC outlet and fully extend the antenna.

Locate the Transceiver Module centrally in the home for maximum RF range. Note: unlike the Lamp Module, you cannot dim/brighten a lamp connected to the Transceiver Module.

Lamp Module

1. Set the House Code to 'A' and the Unit Code to '2.'
2. Plug a lamp into the Lamp Module.
3. Plug the Lamp Module into a convenient AC outlet.

The Lamp Module controls incandescent lamps up to 300W only — not fluorescent, energy-saving, or dimmer-equipped lamps. Caution: never connect a coffee pot or heater to the Lamp Module — risk of damage or fire.

5-in-1 Learning Remote

1. Push the tab and lift off the battery cover.
2. Fit four AAA batteries, matching + and – marks in the compartment.

Button Reference

• Indicator Light: flashes when the remote is operating.
• LEARN: used to learn codes from other remotes.
• TV / VCR / CBL / SAT: selects the device to control.
• X10: controls X10 modules to operate lamps/appliances.
• SET UP: used for programming the remote.
• LAST: selects the last channel viewed.
• CHANNEL +/-: also switches X10 modules on/off.
• VOLUME +/-: also brightens/dims lamps on X10 Modules.
• 0-9 / ENTER: enters device codes.
• A-B: toggles between TV and Video Mode.
• MENU / EXIT / navigation arrows: menu control for the connected device.

Setting Up for TV, VCR, Cable, and Satellite

1. Turn on the device you want to control.
2. Press and hold SETUP until the LED lights steadily, then release.
3. Press and release the mode button for the device you want to control — the LED blinks once.
4. Enter the 3-digit code from the Library Code Table (separate sheet) — LED turns off after the last digit.
5. Point the remote at the device and press POWER — the device should turn off.
6. Turn the device on and press CHANNEL+. If the device responds, setup is complete.

Notes: The TV mode key only stores TV codes, but VCR/CBL/SAT keys can store any device's code. If your device doesn't respond, try other codes for your brand, or use Code Search. When searching, you may need to press CHANNEL+ 50+ times — use PLAY (VCR) or POWER if there's no Channel Up function.

Searching for Codes

1. Turn on the device you want to control.
2. Press and hold SETUP until the LED lights steadily, release.
3. Press the mode button matching the equipment — LED blinks once.
4. Press CHANNEL+ repeatedly until the device changes state (use CHANNEL– to back up if you overshoot).
5. Press and release ENTER to complete setup.

Identifying Codes Found via Search

1. Press and hold SETUP until LED lights steadily, release.
2. Press the mode button for the equipment — LED blinks once.
3. Press and release SETUP again — LED blinks once.
4. Press each number 0–9 to find the first digit (LED blinks on match), then repeat for the second and third digits. LED goes out when the third digit is found.

Learning Codes

If a device code isn't in the library, or you need just a few missing buttons, learn them directly from your existing remote:

1. Point your existing remote at the UR74A, about 1 inch apart.
2. Press and hold SETUP until LED lights steadily, release.
3. Press the mode button for the equipment to learn — LED blinks once.
4. Press and release LEARN — LED blinks once.
5. Press and release the button on the UR74A you want to teach (e.g., POWER) — LED blinks once.
6. Press and hold the corresponding button on your existing remote until the UR74A's LED blinks off.
7. Repeat steps 5–6 for each button, then press SETUP when finished.

Tips: Use fresh batteries in both remotes; don't move either remote while learning; experiment with distance/angle if learning fails. You cannot store functions under LEARN, SETUP, TV, VCR, CABLE, SAT, or X10 keys. Up to 50 buttons can be stored for each of three different remotes.

Restoring Defaults

• Mode Reset: Press and hold SETUP until LED lights, then press Mode, Learn, Learn, Setup — restores default codes for that Mode only (TV, VCR, CBL, AUX).
• Master Reset: Press and hold SETUP until LED lights, then press Learn, Learn, Setup — restores defaults for ALL keys.

Controlling X10 Modules

1. Press and release the X10 button.
2. Enter the Unit Code number of the module (no leading '0' needed for single digits).
3. Press the button for the function you want (see table).

Note: You cannot dim/brighten an Appliance Module — Bright/Dim on an off module simply turns it on.

Changing the X10 House Code

1. Press and release the X10 button.
2. Press and hold SETUP until LED lights steadily, release.
3. Enter the number equivalent to the chosen House Code (1=A, 2=B ... 16=P).
4. Press ENTER to confirm — LED turns off.

The House Code you choose must match the House Code on the Transceiver and Modules you're using it with.

Controlling an IR Mini Controller (IR543)

Standard X10 RF Home Automation code is 999; the IR543 Mini Controller code is 998.

1. Press and hold SETUP until LED lights steadily, release.
2. Press and release the X10 button.
3. Enter 998 (IR Mini Controller) or 999 (standard X10) — LED turns off after the last digit.

You can control both an IR543 and a Transceiver Module at once by storing 999 under X10 and 998 under any other key (except TV).

Troubleshooting

• Transceiver Module doesn't respond to the remote: confirm the Transceiver's House Code is 'A' (or matches the remote's House Code); confirm the X10 button is set to code 999; press ON/OFF on the Transceiver directly to verify it operates the connected item.
• Transceiver works but other modules don't respond: check the Module's House Code matches the Transceiver's; try a different outlet.
• Note: an RF Transceiver (RR501/TM751) can control up to 16 Modules; an IR543 can only control 10 (pressing 1-6-ON turns on Modules 1 AND 6, not Module 16).
• Remote won't control A/V equipment: confirm equipment works with its original remote; confirm you pressed the correct device key; re-enter the code from the code listing; try Code Search; replace the remote's batteries.
