Installation instructions for the X10 PRO PLW02 3-Way Toggle Style Wall Dimmer Switch Kit (Receiver) — including optional 4-way expansion with the PCW03 slave switch.

    Overview

The PLW02 controls incandescent bulbs (40–500W) in a 3-way (or, with an additional PCW03, 4-way) circuit — two or more existing wall switches operating one light or light group. Local push-button On/Off control is provided at the Master (PLW02) and Slave (PCW03) switches; dimming is available only via an X10 PRO remote control. A Power Cutoff Switch below the local pushbutton allows safe bulb changing.

Do not use with: appliances, motors, low-voltage lights, or fluorescent lights. Requires 120VAC, 40–500W incandescent bulbs only — bulbs rated below 40W may flicker or operate erratically.

    Optional / Supplementary Devices

    • PCW03: add for a 4-way setup (see below).
    • XPT2D Wall Controller: adds switch locations where no traveler wires exist (see XPT installation instructions).

    X10 Protocol

House Code dial: letters A–P. Unit Number dial: numbers 1–16. Set each receiver module to a unique unit number (or an identical number, if desired), and set each X10 controller to the same house code as the receivers it controls. Responds to the ALL LIGHTS ON command. Default address is "A1"; change via the code dials using a small flat screwdriver.

Electrical/phase note: most homes are wired split-phase, with each 120V phase not directly connected to the other. If a receiver doesn't respond to a remote controller after installation, verify the receiver's breaker is on the same phase as the controller (switch the breaker if not), or install a Phase Coupler to improve whole-home communication. See www.x10pro.com > Technical Support > PLC Troubleshooting.

    3-Way Installation

    1. Turn power OFF at the circuit breaker.
    2. Pull out the existing 3-way wall switches from both switch boxes.
    3. Remove the common-side wire (by itself) from each switch — in one box that single wire is HOT, in the other it goes to the light.
    4. With the breaker ON, use a voltmeter between ground and each single wire to identify which reads 120V (HOT) vs. 0V (light); mark accordingly.
    5. The Slave (PCW03) installs in the box with the HOT wire; the Master (PLW02) installs in the box with the light wire.
    6. With the breaker OFF, remove the existing switches. Three wires remain in each box: at the Slave box, one HOT plus two traveler wires; at the Master box, one Light wire plus two traveler wires.
    7. Install the Slave Switch first: HOT wire to either BLUE wire, one traveler to the other BLUE wire, the second traveler to the RED wire.
    8. Install the Master Switch second: one HOT traveler wire to BLACK, the second traveler to RED, and the Light wire to BLUE.
    9. Recheck all connections, restore breaker power, and set the Power Cutoff Switch to ON.
    10. Press the switch button once — the light should turn ON; press again to turn OFF.
    11. Control via any X10 Remote Control Module (desktop, wireless handheld, security panel, etc.) at default address "A1," or change the address code using the dials.
    12. Attach switch cover plates.

    4-Way Installation (with Additional Slave)

PCW03 also serves as the additional slave switch for a 4-way configuration with the PLW02.

    1. Turn power OFF at the circuit breaker.
    2. Pull out the existing 3-way wall switches from the two original switch boxes.
    3. Remove the common-side wire (by itself) from each switch — mark HOT vs. light wire per box.
    4. With the breaker ON, verify HOT vs. light wire with a voltmeter as above.
    5. Slave (PCW03) installs in the HOT box; Master (PLW02) installs in the light-wire box.
    6. With the breaker OFF, remove the switches. First install the Slave Switch: HOT wire to either BLUE wire, one traveler to the other BLUE wire, the second traveler to RED.
    7. At the middle box (between Master and last Slave), identify two wires of the same color as the first Slave's HOT traveler — connect both BLUE wires of the middle switch to that same-colored HOT traveler pair; connect the other two same-colored wires together to the RED wire on the switch.
    8. Install the Master Switch: one HOT traveler to BLACK, the second traveler to RED, and the Light wire to BLUE.
    9. Recheck all connections, restore breaker power, and set the Power Cutoff Switch to ON.
    10. Press the switch button once to turn the light ON, again to turn OFF.
    11. Control via any X10 Remote Control Module at default address "A1" (change via code dials if desired).
    12. Attach switch cover plates.
