X10 IR32A IconRemote — Universal Remote Owner's Manual

Owner's manual for the X10 IR32A IconRemote — a color-screen universal remote that combines TV/AV device control with learning capability and X10 home automation control (RF and IR).

Overview

The IR32A IconRemote combines many types of remotes into a single remote with a high-quality color LCD and configurable icon-based menus. Favorite channels can be assigned custom icons and selected with a single key press. If a function isn't natively supported, the IR32A can learn IR commands directly from your original remote. It can also control X10 RF devices, letting you operate electrical devices anywhere in the house via radio frequency signals.

Safety Considerations

• Use good judgment when scheduling unattended Home Automation devices — e.g. an empty coffee pot left on can overheat, and a heater left on under draped clothing is a fire risk.
• Do NOT use the remote to control high-power heating appliances such as portable heaters.
• Do not disassemble any plug-in module or controller — no user-serviceable parts inside.
• If liquid is spilled on a unit, disconnect it from the AC outlet immediately and consult authorized service.
• Do not expose the Home Automation System to rain or moisture.
• This device complies with FCC Part 15 (may not cause harmful interference; must accept interference received). Unauthorized modifications void the user's authority to operate the equipment.

Hard Key Functions (Summary)

Blue text on the remote corresponds to DVD functions, green to TiVo functions, red to audio functions, and yellow to Home Control.

• HIS/HERS — quick access to favorites stored under His/Hers groups; press a second time to access X10 Home Automation modules set up in All Rooms.
• MODE — selects device mode (TV, VCR, Cable, etc.) so hard keys control that device type.
• HOME — returns to the main LCD screen for setup and navigation.
• FAVORITE — accesses favorites for all groups and X10 devices across all locations.
• MENU / GUIDE / OK-SELECT / UP-DOWN-LEFT-RIGHT — navigate on-screen menus and X10 screens.
• +100, CC/SUBTITLE, SAP, THUMBS UP/DOWN, REPLAY, ADVANCE — TV/TiVo-specific functions.
• RECORD/PLAY/STOP/REW/FF/PAUSE — VCR/DVR/DVD transport controls (Record requires two presses).
• ZOOM/ARC — picture zoom / aspect ratio control.
• NUMBERS — direct channel entry; red-labeled numbers function in Audio Mode.
• POWER — turns the device for the remote's current Mode on or off.

Setup

Battery Installation

Remove the back cover, insert 3 fresh AA alkaline batteries matching polarity marks, and replace the cover. Old batteries can cause problems learning codes.

Battery Saver

The remote automatically shuts off if keys stay depressed for more than 30 seconds (e.g. stuck between sofa cushions). The screen also times out after a period of inactivity, adjustable from ~2 to ~120 seconds via Setup > Advanced > Options.

Permanent Memory

All device codes, punchthrough settings, and favorites are retained in permanent memory during battery changes — nothing is lost.

Master Reset

Press HOME, Setup, More, Advanced, Clear Settings, More, then Master Clear. This erases everything set up in the remote.

Setup Wizard: Configuring Devices

After inserting batteries and selecting a language (English, Spanish, or French/Canadian), the Setup Wizard walks through configuring your first device (TV), then Cable, SAT, DVR, DVD, VCR, Audio, CD Player, or AUX. If you know your brand, code search is limited to that brand's codes (faster); otherwise the remote searches its full code library. Point the remote at the device and repeatedly press Power (or another relevant key) until the device responds, then Save. If no code works, the remote offers to Learn commands from your original remote instead.

Setting Up Favorites

Enter a channel number, then Pick Logo from a library of channel logos (or use a numeric label instead). Choose which device (TV, Cable, Sat) each favorite controls. Up to 10 favorites can be set up per pass, assigned to a group (His, Hers, or custom groups) — up to 10 pages of favorites total. Favorites can be added, edited, reordered, deleted, or have their groups renamed later via Home > Setup > Favorites.

Text entry (for labels, macro names, group names) uses "triple tap" cell-phone-style entry: repeatedly tapping a numeric key cycles through uppercase, numbers, and lowercase letters (e.g. key 2 cycles A, B, C, 2, a, b, c). Key 0 enters a space; the key left of 0 backspaces.

X10 Home Automation Setup

X10 systems use three signal types: Infrared (IR), Radio Frequency (RF), and Power Line Carrier (PLC). The IR32A can send IR, RF, or both. When set to X10 mode, it transmits RF to X10 devices; non-RF devices need an RF-to-IR converter like the RE549.

Setting Up RF Transmission for a Device

Home > Setup > More > Wireless > select the device to enable RF for (Side Key) > OK to save. Transmit indicators turn green (RF+IR) vs. red (IR only).

Setting Up a TM751 Transceiver (Housecode Example: "B")

Home > Setup > X10 > Add/Edit > choose room (e.g. Basement) > OK > Pick Device > Appliances > select TM751 > Address > select House Code "B" > Save > Done. Then Mode > select the X10 device icon > select the room > press the icon to test RF transmission.

Setting Up a Lamp Module (Example: LM465, House B / Unit 3)

The Lamp Module controls incandescent lamps up to 300W only — not fluorescent, energy-saving, or dimmer-equipped lamps. Never connect appliances like coffee pots or heaters to a Lamp Module (fire hazard). Home > Setup > X10 > Add/Edit > room > OK > Pick Device > Lamps > select module > Save > Address > set to B3 (must match the module's physical dial settings) > Save > Pick Logo > Save/Done.

Using the Remote

Press HIS or HERS once to access that group's favorites; press again to access X10 modules set up for All Rooms. Selecting MODE > X10 shows a Pick Group (room) screen; pressing a device's Side Key sends the command and updates its on-screen status/icon.

Devices with extended features (e.g. a camera module) show additional control screens. Main Keys can control a camera: OK/Select centers it, navigation keys pan, Channel Up/Down adjusts focus, Volume Up/Down zooms, and Numbers 1–5 recall presets. Wall Switch and Lamp Modules can be turned on/off and dimmed/brightened via CH Up/Down and VOL Up/Down respectively.

Labeling

Devices/icons support two lines of label text, entered via triple-tap numeric entry, via Home > Setup > X10 > Add/Edit > select device > Label.

Sleep Macro & Sleep Timer

Sleep Macro: Set up an X10 device (e.g. an LM465 lamp module), then Home > Setup > X10 > More > Sleep Macro > Pick Module > choose room/module > choose command (e.g. Off) > Save > Done. Then Home > Sleep > X10, and toggle the timing (15 minutes up to 90 minutes ahead).

Device Sleep Timer: Home > Sleep. Set a sleep timer (increments of 15 minutes, up to 90 minutes) independently for any configured device by pressing its Side Key the corresponding number of times. Leave the remote pointed at the device(s) so it can deliver the Power command at the scheduled time.

Mode Key & QuickPower

MODE switches which device type the hard keys control (e.g. Cable mode routes Channel/Volume/Number keys to the cable box). The current mode is shown by an icon in the lower-left of the screen.

QuickPower (Home > QuickPower) shows all configured devices on one screen; pressing any non-grayed-out key sends that device's Power command. A QuickPower Macro for X10 devices can be built via Home > Setup > X10 > More > QuickPower Macro.

Learning Commands from an Original Remote

Tips

• Some functions on some remotes cannot be learned; HOME, MODE, FAVORITE, HIS, and HERS hard keys cannot have functions learned under them.
• Use fresh batteries in both remotes and stay 3+ feet from incandescent/low-energy lighting during learning.
• Align the original remote's IR transmitter end-to-end with the IR32A's learning sensor at the bottom, about 1 inch apart. Watch the flickering "red halo" on-screen; the best learning range is where it flickers fastest.
• Normally hold the key until the display prompts release; if a learned key repeats or fires multiple times, relearn it with a quick tap instead.

Learning Main Keys / Macros

Home > Setup > More > Learn > select device > select a right-side Side Key (K6–K9) to learn under a Main Key, or a left-side key (K1–K5) for a Side Key. Point the original remote at the IR32A and press the key to learn; hold until Success displays. To build a Macro, select Add Key to Macro after the first key learns successfully, optionally set a 1–10 second delay between steps, then learn the next key. Press Done when finished.

Learning Side Keys / Macros

Same flow as Main Keys but starting from the left-side keys (K1–K5), which map to renamable "L" keys (L6, L7, etc. — 27 total). After learning, use Change Label to rename the key to something meaningful (e.g. "DVD Zoom").

Setting Up More Devices & Favorites

Home > Setup > Devices lets you configure additional or replacement devices (including a second TV, labeled distinctly, e.g. "Den TV" vs "Liv Rm TV") using the same flow as the initial Wizard. Home > Setup > Favorites > Wizard adds more favorites to an existing or new group (up to 10 pages of favorites total).

Add/Edit Favorites: Home > Setup > Favorites > Add/Edit > select group > edit/add favorites, or use More to add another page.

Reorder Favorites: Home > Setup > Favorites > Reorder > select group > select favorite to move > select destination (swaps if occupied).

Delete Favorites: Home > Setup > Favorites > Delete > select group > mark favorites with red X > OK confirms (with a warning first).

Rename Favorite Groups: Home > Setup > Favorites > Rename > select group > enter new name (e.g. rename "His" to a person's name).

Clearing Settings: Home > Setup > More > Advanced > Clear Settings lets you selectively clear Device codes, Favorites (by group), Learned commands (by device), Punchthrough settings, or perform a Master Clear (erases everything). Each option shows a confirmation warning first.

Advanced Settings

Options

Adjust Backlight timeout (~2–120 seconds of inactivity) and Key Transmit Time (delay between digits when sending favorites — useful if a set-top box doesn't accept fast digit entry).

Device Codes

Manually enter a device's 4-digit code from the printed code list, or change an existing device's code. This screen also displays currently-set codes for configured devices.

Programming Combo Device Codes

Some combo devices (TV/VCR, TV/DVD, DVD/VCR) require separate codes under two different Mode keys to control each part; others use a single code for both.

Punchthrough

Lets specific keys (Volume Up/Down & Mute, Channel Up/Down, and Play/Stop/Pause/REW/FF/Record) always operate a designated device regardless of the remote's current mode. Configure per-device via Home > Setup > More > Advanced > Punchthrough > select device.

KidSafe

Set a 4-digit KidSafe code (Home > Setup > More > Advanced > KidSafe) and designate a restricted favorites group (defaults to "Kids"). When KidSafe is turned on, everything except the KidSafe favorites group and Volume/Mute is locked — Channel Up/Down and number keys are disabled, and the code must be entered to change any setting or access other favorite groups. Forgot the KidSafe code? Remove and reinsert the batteries to reset it.

X10 Home Control via IR543 / TM751

With an IR543 Command Center and compatible Lamp/Appliance/Wall Switch modules, set up the remote with device code 0999 (under AUX mode or another mode) so the IR32A can communicate with the IR543. Point the remote at the IR543; it retransmits received IR commands as a PLC signal onto house wiring. In AUX mode, press a number key for the target module, then CHANNEL+ to turn on, CHANNEL− to turn off, VOLUME+ to brighten, VOLUME− to dim (Lamp/Wall Switch modules).

With a TM751 RF Transceiver, the remote transmits RF on a specific house code; the transceiver (TM751, RR501, CM15A, or a security console) receives it and forwards it as PLC onto house wiring.

X10 Macros

Macros combine multiple commands and time delays under a single key press. Example flow (using a previously-configured TM751): Home > X10 Macros > OK (first-time wizard) > Pick Module > select room/TM751 icon > On > Set Delay (seconds) > Pick Module again > select icon > Off > Save > Done. Subsequent macros use unused (black-colored) Macro number placeholders; green indicates an already-created Macro.

Deleting X10 Favorites / Clearing Categories

• Delete a single X10 device: Home > Setup > X10 > Delete > room > select icon > OK > Yes.
• Delete a favorite channel icon: Home > Setup > Favorites > Delete > category > select icon > OK > Yes.
• Clear an entire favorites category: Home > Setup > More > Advanced > Clear Settings > Favorites > select category > Clear.
• Clear an entire room of X10 favorites: Home > Setup > More > Advanced > Clear Settings > More > Clear X10 > select room > Clear.

Audio & Video Compatibility (RE549 Half Powermid)

Used with the RE549 Half Powermid, the IR32A can control audio/video components in a different room. Plug the RE549 (up to 20 feet from target equipment) into an AC outlet, point it at the device(s), fully extend its antenna, and optionally attach the included IR extender cable/emitters to up to two additional A/V devices. Pressing any key sends an RF signal that the RE549 converts to IR. Multiple RE549 units can control equipment in multiple rooms.

Voice Dialer Security Console (PS561 / DS7000)

Setup: Home > Setup > X10 > Add/Edit > select room > OK > Pick Device > Security > DS7000 > Security Options > Set Password > enter a 4-digit security code > Set Console Link > put the console into program mode (hold OK until it chimes; confirm the PS561 slide-switch is set to "Install") > Done.

To use: Mode > X10 > select the room with the security console > choose the desired option > enter your password on the Enter Code screen to execute it.
