Specifications for the Web Mountain Technologies SPIM-01 UPB serial plug-in computer interface module.
Product datasheet for the Web Mountain Technologies SPIM-01 — a UPB serial plug-in computer interface module for connecting a PC or NetPlace server to a UPB (Universal Powerline Bus) whole-home control network.
The SPIM-01 converts UPB signals from a computer or NetPlace server onto the home's existing AC wiring for transmission throughout the house. It plugs directly into a standard AC outlet and connects to a computer/server's serial port via a standard RS-232 DB-9 connector on the bottom of the unit. A pass-through electrical plug design means the module doesn't sacrifice outlet availability — a non-controlled outlet remains available on its face for other household devices.
UPB technology uses standard electrical wiring for communication, offering stronger signal strength, lower noise susceptibility, and improved reliability compared to legacy powerline protocols like X-10 or CeBus. Individual homes are selective (no cross-over/interference from adjacent homes) and phase coupling is generally not required except in very large homes.
Plug the module into a wall outlet, then connect it to a NetPlace server or PC using a standard RS-232 serial cable.
