    Wiring

    Strip back the outer jacket of the wiring cable to let wires flex in the case, and leave slack in the wall to avoid stressing wire connections. Terminal layouts vary by model:

    • 5812EZ-W / 5812A-W and 5815EZ-W / 5815A-W: terminals labeled NC, COM, TAMP, TAMP, NC, + — with a spring clip for the latching LED feature.
    • 5820A-W / 5822A-W: 4-terminal connector block with a "cut for latching LED" trace. Note: on the 5822A, the tamper is wired in series with the alarm loop — there isn't room for a separate tamper terminal set.

    Range of Coverage

    Sensors are omni-directional (360° coverage), measured from the sensor to the farthest point on the glass. Mount as close as 3.3 ft (1 m) from the glass.

    • Opposite or adjoining walls: 25 ft (7.5 m) range for plate, tempered, laminated, and wired glass.
    • Ceiling mount: 25 ft (7.5 m) max range for the same glass types.
    • Armor-coated glass: mount no more than 12 ft (3.65 m) from the glass.

    Recommended glass size: 1 ft × 2 ft (0.3 m × 0.6 m) or larger.

    Glass thickness: Plate 3/32"–1/4"; Tempered 1/8"–1/4"; Wired 1/4"; Laminated 1/8"–1/4".

    Avoid installing in: rooms with lined/insulating/sound-deadening drapes, or rooms with closed wooden window shutters inside.

    Testing the Sensor

    1. Connect a 9-volt battery for pre-testing, and use the included double-stick tape to temporarily mount the sensor.
    2. Use the Sentrol 5709C Hand-Held Tester (set to "tempered glass" if unsure of glass type) held on top of the sensor and activate it — this trips the sensor into test mode for one minute (LED blinks continuously). Re-activate at least once a minute to extend test time.
    3. With the sensor in test mode, hold the tester near the glass surface (behind closed drapes/blinds if present), aim at the sensor, and press the test button.
    4. If the LED stays on for 4 seconds, the glass is within detection range. If not, reposition the sensor and retest (and verify the tester's battery strength).
    5. For latching-LED units, open the spring clip and power-cycle the unit to reset the LED.

    When armed and the sensor trips to an alarm, the LED latches solid for 4 seconds, then reverts to a 1-minute test mode; it then extinguishes (non-latching) or stays latched (latching mode, cleared via the spring clip).

    Mounting

    Locate the sensor at least 4 ft from noise sources (TVs, speakers, sinks, doors, etc.) and at least 3.3 ft from the nearest point of the glass to be protected, with a direct line of sight to that glass.

    • Surface mount, wall: best location is the wall opposite the glass (within range/line of sight); ceiling and adjoining walls also work.
    • Surface mount, ceiling: any ceiling type with line of sight to the protected windows; positioning about 8 ft (2.4 m) into the room improves detection, since glassbreak sound travels directionally outward.
    • Recessed, wall or ceiling: drill a 1" hole (1-1/16" for hardwood) — a spade bit gives a cleaner hole than a twist bit. Run wires through the hole and connect per the wiring diagram. Do not install in rooms with ultrasonic sensors.
    • Pre-wire install for 5812EZ (single gang box): place the 5811EZ trim plate accessory over the gang box, route wire through the entry hole, mount the sensor using the aligned screw holes, attach wires to the terminal strip, and snap the front cover in place.

    Avoiding False Alarms

    Areas to avoid: glass airlocks/vestibules, kitchens, corner mounting, residential garages, small utility rooms, stairwells, bathrooms, and other small acoustically live rooms. For these locations, use Sentrol shock or ShatterPoint (5600, 5620) sensors on the windows/frames instead.

    • No glassbreak sensor is hermetically sealed — do not install in humid rooms (moisture can eventually short the board and cause false alarms).
    • Avoid 24-hour loop applications (perimeter loop is fine); recommended for perimeter loops armed whenever door/window contacts are armed.
    • Avoid white-noise sources like air compressors (a blast of compressed air can trigger a false alarm).
    • Avoid rooms smaller than 10 ft × 10 ft (3 m × 3 m) or rooms with multiple noise sources; in tight rooms use a reduced-range ShatterPro II (5820A-W2, 5812A-W2) or ShatterPoint (5600, 5620) instead.

    Coverage geometry: the sensor's optimum detection zone width should be no greater than twice the distance from the sensor to the closest point of glass — e.g., mounted 10 ft from the glass gives a 10-ft optimum zone in either direction from the midpoint.

    Note: ShatterPro II may not consistently detect cracks in glass or bullet penetration — always complement with interior protection. It should be connected to a UL-listed control panel or a power supply providing at least 4 hours of standby power.
